Alec - You are becoming quite the craftsman. I am truly impressed. HINT (I learned from Peter Johnsson). Use 0000 steel wool loaded with pumice and either oil or windex between etches. That way, you get the oxides out of the lower region better, and that helps to deepen the topography and increase chatoyance. Trust me, try it. Then, for final polish, do the same trick after the etches, or do the backed 2000 grit paper trick. The steel wool DOESN'T LEAVE SWIRL MARKS OR, "S" HOOKS though. Try it. I have been making knives for 10 years (and mostly Chinese swords, now). Love this series of videos.

If you made videos of that, I'd love to watch them. Or if Alec made a Chinese sword, that'd be awesome. I'd also like to see him tackle a katana again, but this time with the level of detail he put into the viking sword. What kind of Chinese swords do you make? Those floppy ones have always seemed so cool to me :)

That pommel is absurd though. Also I think that over done damascus patterns is kinda gauche. We've been making that stuff for what, at least a thousand and a half years - yet we don't see etching until the last twenty years. That tells me this is a modern trend. I just don't think it looks cool. I think it looks quite ugly.

Alec- This series has addicted me to your workshop for two reasons... A) I am a newly starting blacksmith, and B) I am an active rapier student. I have been studying rapier under tutelage as a martial art, and wanted to blend my new blacksmithing to manufacturing rapiers. Not only has your videos been incredibly entertaining, but also incredibly informative. That is a weapon that I would gladly carry or gift to even the master I study under. Well done, and keep up the amazing videos!

I remember when you made your first sword in your old work shop. Massive undertaking. You learned a lot. But to see that you've come so far as to hand forge your very own Damascus steel rapier that is absolutely beautiful by the way, it's amazing. Truely the finest forged work I have ever seen. Just the pattern of the Damascus, the fluted inlaid silver African black wood handle (probably my favourite part of the piece), the beautifully flowing basket. It really is stunning. Fantastic work.
@dominicmorelli886 жыл бұрын
You have truly surpassed yourself Alec, that thing looks amazing. The pattern is incredible and it's not even the best part of the sword. Congratulations. I've been subbed for about a year now and I'm not even a blacksmith but it has been so beneficial to me to watch someone constantly aim for perfection in skills they don't even possess yet and with such incredible energy. You're an inspiration dude, thank you.
@ghostfather13906 жыл бұрын
beautiful piece Alec, well done! I suggested, in a previous comment, that you might want to really challenge yourself by making a Kris (from Wikipedia; The kris is an asymmetrical dagger with distinctive blade-patterning achieved through alternating laminations of iron and nickelous iron (pamor).[3] While most strongly associated with the culture of Indonesia the kris is also indigenous to Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Singapore and the Philippines where it is known as kalis with variants existing as a sword rather than a dagger. The kris is famous for its distinctive wavy blade, although many have straight blades as well.), but other significantly easier ideas might include such things as a traditional mace, warhammer, and single or double bladed war axes, and even on to pole arms like partisans and bardiche, or even an outright two handed great sword, as you seem to be escalating your weapons as you go. keep up the good work, and learning the lessons from the not quite as good as it could have been work, and keep the camera turned on, and I will keep watching, be well

This is a GORGEOUS sword. My only issue is the rough finish on the wire basket... it "feels" crude, and doesn't match the gorgeous finish of the entire rest of the weapon.

I'm guessing if I handed you a hundred doller Bill you would take it but complain about the wrinkles in it
@Valandar26 жыл бұрын
... Wow. Just... wow. The comparison does not equate, there. He made an amazingly gorgeous sword, but the wire basket isn't up to the quality of either the blade, or his level of work. This is a thing that can be said, because I respect the man's work. There's a difference between being a jerk complaining about a wrinkled bill, than someone expressing an opinion about a piece of art presented to us. Or is the expressing of an opinion now verboten?
@alexjavanainen42596 жыл бұрын
I agree as well. This is absolutely amazing overall, but as he says himself "nothing is perfect" and if there were an area that area I could see him wanting to potentially just a tiny bit better is here. This is a beautiful piece of art of any artist wouldn't mind some positive criticism or ideas. On another note, I could potentially see him somehow incorporating the silver wire into the basket and really accenting some curves to make it pop!

Hi Alec, could you make a simple felling axe or bearded axe in the near future, maby out of some 1055 or similar simple steel, you could transition from forged finish to polished over the blades edge , it would probably be a quick and simple project for you but would be a great help for us who dont have much equipment/ experience with forging, it would almost be like an in-depth tutorial through the video, anyway maby you could consider it, thanks. Eoin from Ireland 🇮🇪.

That sword is loved. Alec put heart and soul into it, pushing past his skill level to stylize the work on a far more personal level and it shows so much in these videos. I feel a little like I just watched a distant cousin graduate preschool though. Talk about standing on ceremony, 14 times longer than truly necessary but there are those that appreciate the journey more than myself. I do appreciate the work and workmanship very much regardless! Also, is it just me or is the quality of this, the journey in particular seem like this could be a short movie? I don't mean all individual episodes just combined in order, but like edited to show a story of craftsmanship? Not unlike that documentary about that guy that built a cabin in Alaska back in the 50's or 60's from hewn logs into a cabin to building a bed. I wonder if something like that could be sold or become an add-on item in a merch store or something.

After watching the process of building this handle, would it have been easier to have located the double pins between the, hilt, bolster, handle, pommel and button, before doing the shaping and fitting? I'm thinking a stack of raw material, all pinned together before any shaping. Lovely rapier, I do admire your work ethic. Anyone would be proud to have that in their collection.

I know I'd have to sell my two cars to make the down payment on the loan I'd have to request to get this sword from you, Alex, but I have to say I am extremely tempted to do so. This thing will make any place look like a 17th century palace, hung on a plate, over the fireplace. Absolutely beautiful piece! Can't wait to see more of these!

That is the best rapier I've ever seen. The length, it's ideal. Remarkable work.

I want to see a true swordsman handle and review this sword. This channel is all about learning and exposing mistakes. I think Alec should really open his work up to the scrutiny of an expert and let us in on the journey. The rapier is super lovely, but there may well be a specific move that a sword fighter would need to do that the swept/basket hilt impedes or something like that. I want to know how well this sword would have worked in the hands of the Scarlet Pimpernel or The Count of Monte Cristo.

I think he still considers himself a beginner so I'm sure the sword isn't perfect. Just like he made the first chef knife and then greatly improved upon it with the 2nd. But I agree, it would be fun to have Matt Easton there to complain about the balance and stuff, do a few test cuts as well.

Have you thought about a cane sword as a project. I saw in a previous video that you wanted to try more wood work in a project so a Victorian gentleman's cane sword would fit the bill

I really appreciate how alix shows you his mistakes, instead of cutting it out like a lot of others do

Good video. There reason the first two pommels didn't work was because you didn't hit them with a hammer. I hope you learned your lesson. 😉

The absolute best part of whatching you make this was watching you struggle and problem solve. Never stop challenging yourself and your videos will always be worth watching!
