Our cats have always been very good about not scratching our furniture and instead scratch the things that we have gotten for them that they are supposed to scratch. I have made them two wooden cardboard cat scratcher holders. I made these by making a single wooden box and cutting it in half at an angle. This gave me a sloped support for the cardboard scratching piece. I did wood inlays over the knots in the wood and at the corners to strengthen them. The wood is red alder that I cut down a few years ago and the inlays are walnut. Both cats seem to enjoy the scratchers.

Was cool to see this video pop up, I made similar cat scratchers and foot stools for under your desk back in summer of 2020 when I couldn't get a job due to covid! Only main difference other than specific dimensions and the beautiful joints, etc, was I put carpet instead of cardboard for the cats to pick away at that carpet instead of our house's haha

I actually do offer a carpeted version of this that can be integrated into pretty much any of my tree designs! I had a client ask for it a couple years ago and of course I was like, "Why WOULDN'T I do this?" I just wish the dollar store cardboard inserts were the same dimensions as the pet store ones (which cost more, but that cost doesn't affect me).

Lovely project. I wonder how long those carboard inserts last. I would insert a plank of soft wood, without running it through a planer, so it keeps the rough surface from cutting. I used such a plank, I think it was Spruce, on the scratcher for our cats and it did outlive two of them. Of course, the surface gets destroyed and we had always some sawdust near the scratcher. But our cats did only a little dent in the middle, where they mostly used it. Before we had some sisal rope wound around a piece of wood, but our cats managed to shred it to pieces in no time. The Spruce was a much better choice. The cats immediately got used to it.

Frank, there is one problem with the angle of this scratcher, after a few months, the two cats will start peeing on it, if you use the short side as the base and put the long side against the wall, the cats will use it more like a tree, just put a screw into the top corners so they can't pull the pad out of the holder.

Well, cats, just like dogs, actually have 2 arms & 2 legs, when you consider the rear pair have knees and ankles, and the front pair have elbows and wrists, so by that logic, they also have hands, and thus fingers. Furthermore, some dexterous cats use claws to pick up individual pieces of food, but exclusively with their front paws.... Also: Lovely work Frank : )
@williamreinhard
@williamreinhard 2 жыл бұрын
While the anatomy of their front and back legs is similar to those of a biped, they definitely are four legged creatures and thus have four feet. So I'd say all their digits are toes.
