I use sharpened bicycle spokes about 10" long for the darts. They are high quality steel and work perfectly. They can be hammered flat on the end and you can easily form a "broadhead" with a file. It helps if you heat the end, as the steel spoke is very hard and somewhat difficult to hammer flat. In a pinch, I've even used a 16d framing nail as a dart. It works, but not nearly as good as the spokes. Far too heavy. I cut a plug of high density styrofoam (about 1 1/2" long) for the "fletching' and shove the dart about half way into the plug. I use a short section of the pipe (sharpened) as a "cookie cutter" by twirling it between my hands.... like the woodsman does when he's trying to start a fire using a stick. His tip of the caulking tube is odd and far too heavy. The styrofoam plugs might be slightly too tight in the barrel, so you will have to roll it very slightly with a flat board to make it a tiny bit smaller in diameter. Easy does it....or you will make them too loose and they won't be worth a hoot. This is critical. You want to achieve an almost totally air-tight seal and yet not too tight to impede it's efficiency. I use 1/2" electrical conduit pipe for the barrel. The pipe length of 60" is critical. I have tested it using lengths from 24" to 72" and 60" is perfect. I also take a wooden dowel, make a saw kerf in the end, slip a piece of 100 grit sandpaper in it and chuck it in a drill and polish the inside of the barrel. It makes a HUGE difference. I also swab the inside with silicone (WD 40 WILL NOT WORK!) and let it try thoroughly before using it. Mine will penetrate 1/4" of plywood easily from about 40 feet. Be careful..... these things are VERY dangerous. It will easily penetrate a Walmart chicken breast! Same with an apple. A can of warm beer in the summer is awesome if you shake it up first! Be sure and take a pair of pliers with you when you go afield with it, because many times you won't be able to pull out the darts without ruining them if you hit a tree or wood surface. Tip: Push the dart into the barrel about an inch and a half before you shoot it. It makes a BIG difference. Try it without it..... and then with it and you will see what I'm talking about. To get the most velocity from it, you have to blow into it as if you were trying to spit a hair from your mouth. You want a sudden burst of air, with lots of volume and gusto! I made my first one when I was 18 years old. I'm now 76, and I made two of them this week. I refuse to grow up!

@@Shouji_akutami , Thank you. I've found that if you taper the leading edges of the styrofoam dart (to make it more aerodynamic) it will perform much better. Also, I shortened the overall dart length to 7". That seems to really fine tune it. When they make a "pop" when they leave the barrel, you know you've got things right.

If you fine tune the fit between the caulk tip and the dart, you can get it to detach as it hits the target and allow the dart to completely penetrate. That's how larger game is taken with the blow gun.. as the dart hits the "fin" detaches and allows the steel to keep goinf

I made a blow gun out of 1/2 in EMT conduit back in my electrical class in my tech school. Only about a 3 to 4 foot long bit of pipe could shoot a smaller wire nut a good 30 feet.

The red and yellow buy in bulk electrician wire nuts make perfect stunner darts. Trim the little “ear” pieces off and they fit right in.

Hey man just wanted to say I tried this myself and made a small tweak. I put cotton down the tube before I put the wire for the dart thru I put sum glue in the tube. I then put the dart wire thru and proceeded to add more glue i then let it dry and its shoots a bit better you should try it.

A friend of mine had a real blow gun that he bought. It was commercially made, had small light darts ( smaller than your Mikah), and very deadly! We could sink one of those really fine blow gun darts deeply into a solid wood door. One very important safety tip is INGALE BEFORE OUTTING YOU MOUTH AROUND THE BLOW GUN. I am not sure the ones you made would go up the tub, but the darts that came with my friend's blow gun could travel backwards and embed in your throat. So, be careful. THIS IS NOT A TOY. IT IS A VERY DANGEROUS FUN THING TO SHOOT AT STUFF!

Hey man I love the content. Keep it up! I’ve been making my own for a long time now and I use the caulking tips but I use panel nails and trio nails with a full sized head and hot glue them inside the top. Works amazing ! Works great on squirrels rabbits frogs grouse or any small game.

Much better hunting darts. We hunted squirrels, raccoons and doves with these as kids. My friend was so good with his that when we went dove hunting he would throw a rock to make the dove fly and then shoot it on the wing. He seldom missed either. here is how they are made ........ cone shaped drinking cup piece of conduit half the length of a 20 penny nail. (cut from original conduit) push a sharpened 20 penny nail through bottom of cup from inside insert nail into short conduit trim cup down to even with top of electrical conduit with razor knife. File inside of conduit ends for smooth entry and exit and push in long conduit for tight fit. to remove cutting burrs. reusable if you find them, disposable if you don't NOTE: forget PVC you don't get near enough velocity. If you shorten it you sacrifice accuracy.

No.... it's very important to use only spray paint. It's against the law to use tape, and they will arrest you for using it.

Rabbits and squirrels are a bit too tough.. I've had a hard time taking out squirrels with my homemade bow and it barely punctures. I doubt this could even skewer rats unless you hit em exactly in the right spot. If a blow gun is what you're lookin to hunt those rodents with, I recommend you pick up a professional one for 50 bucks on Amazon

Your darts were too complicated. Back in the 80's we used wire coat hanger for the dart shaft and the cone end was made by rolling simple loose leaf paper. Masking tape and a 1/2" copper water pipe make up the rest of the kit. Good times!
