The best part of this video is the information about the oil passage to the drivers side. I've looked into priming my engine for a few days and nobody mentions that at all. Someone did say how a cheap priming tool with the big slot sucked, but didn't explain why and I'm like "what? It just has to spin, WTF are you talking about?" Also, neighbour mechanic says make one out of a piece of pipe with a pin through it. Already have one made for aligning the slot when dropping the distributor, glad I didn't prime it with that.

Glad you got something out of it. I used to do the screwdriver in the drill trick until I noticed that oil wasn't filling both banks of lifters. Thanks for watching.

I really appreciate this video! I am getting to the need in the near future for a Chevy oil priming tool! I was pricing them out just yesterday! I won't cut the distributor body because the distributor I have on hand I may need one day after rebuilding it. So, I have a dumb question, Does the shaft have to spin only clockwise when priming? I'm a new subscriber on your channel. And by the, where can I get a bag of red shop rags that you mentioned.

Well first off, thanks for subscribing and watching. Yes, the pump needs to spin clockwise to bring oil into the pump and distribute it through the system. As for the shop rags.....Sam's Club. The last batch we bought were white and seem to be a little more absorbent than the red ones.

@@allhailinternalcombustion are they any good? I heard they pull up the shaft and break the plastic coupler and u have to grind them to fit
@allhailinternalcombustion3 ай бұрын
@@user-ds9zd8eq6uYes, it works great. The oil pump driveshaft and the distributor have a little play and I've never had a distributor pull the shaft up, I've had the distributor itself get stuck from sludge build up.

@@allhailinternalcombustion will it oil up both banks at the same time?
@allhailinternalcombustion3 ай бұрын
@@user-ds9zd8eq6u Yes it will because of the original distributor body allowing oil to get to both lifter galleries. Some of the tools they sell online only allow one side to get oil, which can have disastrous results. On a small or big block Chevy the oil pump feeds the mains, then the lifters, which feed the rockers. Of course it all makes its way through the filter first. If you'll notice towards the base of the distributor there's a groove, that's where oil goes from the driver's side to the passenger side, assuring both sides get proper oiling.

Hopefully i can just roll it over with the starter a few times

If it's a fresh rebuild, like within the past few weeks, it SHOULD be ok. But if it's been longer you should at least put a large flathead screwdriver on the oil pump shaft and spin it up while rotating the engine occasionally. Dry spots on bearings and lifters can be catastrophic, and why take the chance.

Right, i just dont have a spare distrib lying around, cant imagine pullaparts still got one either. Ill check it out@@allhailinternalcombustion
