Wow this is a great example of form and function combined in a single item! I love the design and the process was well done too. One thing you might want to try when using reclaimed steel is to use spot annealing to soften areas that you want to drill into. Simply submerge the part(s) you want to keep tempered and heat the area you want to anneal.
@TheSmallWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! After I finished this project I bought a torch just for that purpose. Before that I tried annealing steel using my gas stove which worked to some success, like for the drill bit darts in a previous video, but it did almost nothing to this steel, even tho I'm pretty sure it's not HSS. The stove is just not hot enough. In the future I'll use the torch for this and also to do some heat treating.

This is the BEST marking knife/chisel i have ever seen...Ur work is AMAZING I could imagine the stuff that u could make if u were in a lot bigger shop and had any tools that u wanted...
@TheSmallWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Thank you. What I lack most is time in the shop. I can live with the lack of space and tools I started to gather quite a collection, but time seems to shrink.
@AyoDenny7 жыл бұрын
Yeah i know what u mean...If any craftsman could pick one thing to have more of it sure would be time...But honestly it shows your true CRAFTSMANSHIP what you do with a small shop and you INSPIRE the next generation showing them that u dont need 5000 sq ft to make HIGH QUALITY stuff...And to be honest you present your videos so well and i love your small shop...Keep up the GREAT WORK as you always do.....

Very excellent work! My father and I are both tinkerers and we tend to use a lot of homemade/modified tools. As such, we had started making cutting/marking/chisels out of old files in which I suggested to him of making something very much like this with the chisel cut blade both side and end. Also mentioned to him that if we ever used a broken file we could even leave the one top side and surface(away from the cutting sides) as files just to have that as an added feature. I will share this video with him for reference. Thank you!
@TheSmallWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea to leave the file on the top of the chisel, adding another function to the tool!

Here I am at 5 in the morning and I haven’t slept at all tonight. I’m in my last year of college and it’s finals week. And instead of sleeping or studying, I’ve been binge watching KZbin vids all night and stumbled across your channel. I’m addicted now because watching these reminds me of when I was in elementary school (I’ll be 25 in July) and watching my poppy (grandad) in his workshop. He served in WW2 in the navy, and in his spare time learned how to do this kind of stuff. It became a hobby that he loved. A few years before he passed away in 2013 he made a couple of bookcases, a hat rack, and a cabinet for my bday and painted them blue. I still have them in my room. I hope to learn how to do this some day to be able to do what he did. And also because Ron Swanson is my favorite Parks and Rec character lol.

I just made one of these out of an old planer blade a few weeks ago. It was cool coming across your build video. I thought the idea was quite origional, but i see it wasn't. It is crazy how similar our builds are! They are close to identical, right down to handle shape and the small bit on back for tapping on. I wanted to show you a pic, but it won't let me attach it. Anyway, nice job, and "great minds think alike!"

I like that alot. and yes they are versitile..Mora makes a knife with a chisel blade and alot of folks love it. I was worried about the handle when i saw you have to fill the space with extra wood...but it turned out fine..i woulda prolly used a colored spacer..and the handle seemed thin to me at first but the way you use it means that it works just fine. I would prolly feel more secure if the handle was wider tho..feel safer handleing it. But its a great way to use an old planer blade. and you did really well at keeping the temper and hardness of the blade by cooling it often. well done my friend!
@TheSmallWorkshop7 жыл бұрын
Yea, I was inspired by the Mora, I've said it in the title. The handle was inspired by the kiridashi knives that's why it's so slim and plain. I used the same wood for the insert trying to keep the handle simple and also because I'm not very familiar with using the belt sander so I had no clue how easy it would be to shape a sandwich of different materials.

Stunning work. Perhaps an alternative to pinning would be to do wire wrap (steel or copper) near the back, inlayed into the wood. Just structural mainly but maybe you could even get fancy and do braided wire and such. Anyways, I absolutely love this as it is and may have to try one myself.

@ugo4707 жыл бұрын
I have towo recommendation for you. Recommendation 1. For cooling use oil no water. Water is good for hardening but not for cooling when you cutting and grinding. If You use the water, in steel are formed martensite, this structue is hard but very very fragile. Recommendation 2. If you have desired shape of your knife, you maybe use hardening and tempering. If you do this two steps you have a much better and sharper blade.
@eriklorentzen65107 жыл бұрын
I think you're really on to something with this guy. I've actually recently been playing with doing mortis and tennon style joints for bushcraft related projects to save my cordage, and the key issue I've run into is dressing the fittings with a drop point, or spear point blade tip. A small chisel knife like this would be perfect for cleaning and dressing the notches and tennons for a secure tight fit that doesnt require any cordage to lock down. Might try to do a quick file knife of this kind to test it out, wont be nearly as lovely as this one though I'm afraid ;)
