I kind of like how the thicker fabric makes the shoulder area stand up, instead of hanging down. It makes it look more imposing, like armor.

Lovely! Now I need to make a reversible solar system/pizza cape, because when making a fully lined garment anyway, why not make it reversible? The hair-clip loop on the hood can be worked into the design.
@allisonyaguchi71775 ай бұрын
I've seen wig clips used as well for hoods. The kind that look like tiny combs to keep wigs attached to the wig caps/your hair. The loops are a great idea too!

OMGoodness I would love to use this method on a dressing gown. I love hoods and never realized they were so simple. Pizza 🍕 hood would make a cute Halloween costume for a toddler. They could be a pizza monster and stay warm also. Just think if you made it long enough it could be modified once they became an adult and have a real conversation piece. Lol 😂Hugs

This is genius! I’ve patterned up an 18th century mantelet and I’m going to use the hood from Costume Close Up as the hood. Rather than something light, I’m going to make it in some brown wool type fabric I’ve got. I’m definitely planning on using my calico stash to see if the pattern needs changing anywhere so it doesn’t gape at the front etc and then adjusting from there. Used the entire pattern to make a red cloak some years ago, but used a wool loden, which sheds and is really a bit thick to drape properly, so I’m still on the look out for a lighter weight wool to make it again! Based on a headscarf I bought, sometimes something as simple as a length of velvet ribbon can be useful - velvet clings to the hair quite well - and you can leave a couple of short gaps so you can still use Bobby pins if you need to. Also, with my 18th century cloak, I had some leftover red cotton flannel left from a PJs project and it turned out that by adding it over the seam where the body and hood are joined, it finished the edge AND was more comfy on my skin. And didn’t show much bc of the colour
@akhagee47075 ай бұрын
PJ cotton flannel as the hood lining! Thank you for that thought. I was just trying to figure out how to get a hood to stay on my elder kiddo who's hair won't hold a bobby pin.
@cassmacdonald-perfectlyimp24865 ай бұрын
@@akhagee4707 it was more on the inside of where the hood and main body joined, so the wool didn’t itch my skin, but I have made a lovely wool hat with leftover red cotton flannel as the lining and not only is it soft, but it does indeed not come off my head! If that doesn’t work, definitely try the velvet ribbon technique: a strip sewn horizontally (eg ear to ear) onto the inside or lining of the hood should grip your hair really well AND you can leave gaps along the edge of the ribbon (ie not sewing at certain points) where you could use a Bobby pin to hold it onto your hair if you really needed to
@akhagee47075 ай бұрын
@cassmacdonald-perfectlyimp2486 maybe both the flannel & ribbon together once I make her next cape/cloak. Because our hair is so thin bobby pins just slide right out.
@cassmacdonald-perfectlyimp24865 ай бұрын
@@akhagee4707 I really hope it works. If you’ve got a flannel shirt or something it may be an idea to use the brushed side of that to see if it will stick on your hair. My hair is really thick, but it can be very shiny and slippery (it behaves how it wants, when it wants and can be anything from super curly to loose waves or straight if I use my GHDs), so I do empathise.

I love the look of the cape, and I think that the heavier fabric is a great choice because it stands out instead of draping and it adds to the look
