I’m knitting a doleman sleeve sweater right now, in a very light yarn on very small needles. To say the least, it is the most irritating experience I’ve ever had while still enjoying myself. I’ve struggled with all things fabric and sewing in the past, but seeing how simple it is to make a doleman sleeve this way is making me think that I should have just tried a bit harder when learning how to sew. This is such a simple and elegant construction for a garment!

I have a 1906 Singer treadle with a papyrus design that sounds a lot like the machine you were describing. Apparently they were made in red and green, the red being more rare, so of course I have the green. It still works, has lovely details on the drawers and sides, and is a real piece of art... for those of us who appreciate such things, haha. Thanks for another wonderful, informative video BTW Bianca!

I realised this morning that you have inspired me in more ways than I thought. I made a bustle gown last month using the same pattern you used for the skirt that you did in red quilting cotton a while back and used a Butterick pattern for the day bodice but i couldn't find an evening bodice pattern that worked for me. So... inspired by you, I am hacking the day bodice pattern to make a sleeveless top. Thankyou!

Excellent, the reveal is giving very Joan Crawford vibes. On the subject of shoulder pads: I was a teenager in the 1980s, and I used to take the shoulder pads out of clothes and wear them AND NOBODY NOTICED. Only time in my life I've been able to buy off-the-rack jackets that fit me properly.

OH, so nice to have a tutorial about tucks - I recently saw a vintage dress pattern with shoulder tucks that I thought I would like to try to replicate, but I wasn't sure how to draft (or sew) that part of it, even given the diagram of the original pattern pieces to work from. Easier and more straightforward than I would have guessed! (or more like "It can't be that easy? yes, it actually can.") (also good job not buying the machine, if you buy it now you will just have to move it.)

A very glamorous and elegant lady. I see this with a double row of pearls, hanging down to the waist. Maybe with a knot in the middle. These days of course, it will be pearl coloured beads, but you get the idea. I have a fine napped velvet with an odd pattern that I now see has to be this pattern. Thank you. I should be sewing summer stuff as I am in New Zealand, but this seems far more important now. Good luck house hunting (or should it be sewing space hunting lol)

I have a modern Janome which has snap on feet. I bought a 30+ foot set to use with the Janome. Also - based on inspiration from you, I picked up a vintage 201. The Janome and the 201 are both low shank machines as is (I believe) your 99-K. A couple of months ago I picked up a low shank adapter for clip on feet and now I can use all those clip on feet on both machines.

Strange but beautiful fabric. Navy is my personal favourite basic dark colour. You have reminded me to make my next winter coat with dolman sleeves and shoulder darts. I had forgotten how well they work for outerwear. It had been in my mind for the last coat--years ago now--but I was given some fabric that wanted to be a coat, just not enough for generous sleeves.

Excited to go to a second chance Goodwill bin store tomorrow because everything is sold by the pound, hoping for some good fabric finds tomorrow! Motorizing a treadle machine is a cinch! It's just a matter of screwing a small motor to the end of the machine and getting the proper belt, both of which are readily available. I had to do this with my Singer 201-k that came to me from Britain and didn't have a US current compatable motor. I would love to get one of the lotus machines for that price here in the US! 😱 That's a real find!

Convertible treadle is the answer! I've seen it done because the machine body will still have the holes to mount the motor. You lower the machine. Flick the belt off for the treadle. Then you can slip on the belt for the motor. I've seen it mostly for places with power outage problems. And the vintage sewing machine motor seller is in Florida now. I can't remember their website name but they are helpful.

I feel like, from my understanding, a tuck is half a dart, and a pleat is only really secured at the top / seam but otherwise is just pressed into shape. so it comes down to amount of loose fabric and whether there's a "pocket" made at all from the stitching :) You may not be a purist but you do seem to have a lot of really good methods for doing things, and they tend to make sense to me at least! your methods have been very helpful in my own sewist journey. Appreciate you explaining all your processes! 💚 If Gutermann sent you a lifetime supply, they'd lose their #1 customer sales...! 😂😂😂 Even though the direction of the grain was mostly for practical reasons, I kindof really enjoy the contrast of texture direction between the bodice and skirt. It adds some extra interest to the design :)

it is so beautiful and classy! your construction always looks so easy and smooth. somewhat unrelated question. i LOVE your brooches. the royal family ware a lot of brooches but they always have a scrap of fabric behind them, it usually looks like taffeta. i always wondered why? the only thing i can think of is to protect the dress from the brooch. they are usually priceless artifacts so that tracks but the also look pristinely clean. like the late queen would ware a yellow dress suit with a pastel pink scrap with a diamond pin. it makes the piece look five times bigger. probably thinking too hard on this 😅💜💜💜

On pleats vs tucks: I've always thought of a tuck as something that is sewn DOWN like a dart, and a pleat is something that is sewn ACROSS along a (reasonably) perpendicular seam or stitch line. I have absolutely no basis for this. 🫠
