Your mission statement of recycle/upcycle well and truly filled here. A gorgeous build. Removing those mounts really simplified the lines and gave it a more sleek look. It definitely didn't need and 'blackening' it works just fine!

Another reason to add to your list of using hand planes over power planes is the finish they leave behind. If well set up you can eliminate all tearout even on figured woods and leave yourself with a surface that's ready to have a finish applied.

A really nice looking project. Absolutely the correct decision not to blacken the steel (which can cheapen the look of a project sometimes) the waxed bare metal is beautiful and if it does develop a patina in time then that will further compliment it. A truly beautiful piece Keith. 👍🏻

From Australia, I was in the UK in 1990, and of course I was working as a barman/cellarman, learned a lot about how look after and present "pommy" beer was a great experience all round and enjoyed it immensely !!! We had a wonderful 'Summer' that year and the Poms were complaining about the heat, similar to what you have now, they could not understand how I could be enjoying the weather as I had to wear a shirt and tie for work, until I explained to them about the 'Summer temps' where I come from [North Queensland, Australia], I don't know how many beer coaster maps I drew to explain where I lived, but they were satisfied in the end that it was not hot for me in the UK Summer ?? Was working in the Twickenham area around Eel Pie Island and so on at the The George, The Three Kings and The Cabbage Patch near the railway station, say hello to all the pubs there for me if you are ever in the area, most of the bar staff in the area were either Aussies or Kiwis so 'old home week' for us !!

Great video and really beautiful table. For nice looking bare metal you can try applying a phosphate solution to create a chemical reaction that homogenizes rust to a dark color and then apply clear lacquer spray. Leaving the metal parts in open space to create a thin layer of rust, has better results.

One way to blacken metal is to heat them up using a blow torch or something similar and then dipping them in used motor oil. Gives it a nice antique finish. Its usually used for hinges and small items but I can't see why it can't be done or larger objects, other than the need for a large dipping container.

You mentioned that you would like some tips on mettle painting,I'm sure you have used rattle cans before,and there are some very good rattle can manufacturers about,but the GOLDEN rule when painting any material, wood,metal,plastic,concrete, bricks,I could go on,is PREPARATION,it is the most important part of any project,and I know you're aware of that,because I know you're learning all the time,so you will have no problems painting anything if you do your prep correctly first,take care and be happy

How do you think your workshop will have to change now you use it as a business? Your DeWalt saw is great but I imagine the brushed motor is fairly loud, would you consider upgrading to something like the Charnwood W619 for its induction motor and sliding carriage? I know it probably won't fit it with your current layout but the footprint can incorporate a router table with some modification.

@RagnBoneBrown

Thanks Chem. As my dust extractor is hooked up to small 30mm pipes the chips from the planer would be too big and cause a blockage. I’ve tried to figure out a way of running 100mm pipe to it but haven’t managed it yet. When I get a bigger place it’ll be easier I think
