I used to build these with my cousin back in the 90s. We would broom to candles as well. But we cut a slant into the head of the lure and depending on where we placed the screw eye, it would affect the depth that the lure would travel. They would typically go about 1 to 2 feet underneath the surface. Great video. Brought back some good memories.

Awesome Video. I am a woodworker/wooden boat builder, and have really been trying to get into making baits. I can make them, and they end up working really well, its just my painting skills that lack! Shovel handles are normally Hickory as well, so wicked tough, and heavy. Broom handles are Southern Yellow Pine. I love the bait making videos, and Marling baits is dope. Love the video, and hope you make some more! Buy a Wen benchtop lathe, and make some cool baits! Thats the lathe I have. ALSO if you get into making other baits, try out AZEK PVC Trim. Very boyant, and easy to work with and carve with a knife.

Pro tip for the next one you make, since you’re going to put a screw in for the joint, do that first for a handle instead of your hand when putting it in the belt sander for the taper.

I wanna say it ripped the tail because you had to thin it out to insert it in the slot. The sheer strength of the plastisol was weakened slightly. Very cool though! I got a glidebait I'm working on with a similar tail slot, and am using a tougher rubber tail to hopefully eliminate the same thing happening. Helps that it costs 12 cents to make each tail too.
