Hiya Basia, Thank you so very much for this incredible lesson in sawing and soldering, and polishing, and, and, and... Dear Lady you have smashed it out the court, to steal a tennis term! A perfect example of how to do it all, and to do it perfectly. Okay if it was in 9ct red gold on Argentium it might be considered even better, but even then... The very minor use of Platinol worked so well, but I really can not see how anyone could improve on this, you just did it so very well dear lady. Will it go in your shop? Your use of the strong-coloured backlight was perfection, a smoke machine would have added a different level but it worked so well as you had it that saying that is really nitpicking. It was a fantastic video and for once I'm not going to say I missed your voice, well okay I did, but you were right it was perfect as you had it. I think that in my opinion, this is one of your very best ever videos, if not the very best. So again thank you Basia for making this for us to show where our skills can take us if we work as hard as you have. I love the whole production and product. Am I right in thinking you have your Durston bench back from home? I'm sure your bench pin did not have the yellow vice under it as you normally do on your make-do bench to give it the height you need. I did think you would choose the 8/0 saw blade rather than the 7/0, but then you are the teacher, and I'm merely the pupil... Stay safe you two, Steve xx

Thank you so much Steve! You're always so encouraging and supportive, it really means the world to me ❤️ I'm super happy you enjoyed this video and like the style, it was definitely something a bit different than usual, and while that is true, I also feel like this video expands on the themes and editing tricks I was using in the past, but this time I went all in hahaha 😁 With the smoke, not sure I understood you, did you mean that I should've added smoke? Because I actually did haha 😅 it may not be as visible, because it was hard to keep it condensed, even in that small space. But I got a different smoke making liquid now, which will produce a thicker smoke, and that may be more visible on the video. As for the blades, I wanted to go for the 8/0, but was worried that it may be too fragile for brass, which I was only using for the second time so far. 7/0 worked perfectly well, even 6/0 would've been OK I think 😀 Again, thanks so much for watching!
@stephencoster95322 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing thank you for the answer on the smoke. I've always tried to use it as you did, very subtle rather than not being able to see the subject. I only ever say what I mean in the comments dear lady. You are an inspiration to us all in your smithing and videoing too. Even the 6/0 would have worked for you, but for us, with all the extra saw blade marks to clean up? I would still have broken loads of blades, well okay a few. Hehehe. I can see your dancing background in the video, very theatrical, and very well done. You are a very accomplished lady. Again thank you. Now for the important stuff, I need more coffee... Steve xx

Okay, I hope people read this; if you look at Basia's bench pin when she finishes cutting out the dragon, look how very little damage there is in the wood from saw blades. Basia has been using this pin for a while now, yet you can see how few times she has hit the wood. The edge is moving up and down in the same place in the air and not twisting and turning or pushing hard against the metal precisely as it should. When I say watching Basia saw is a master class, you can see the proof in the wood, or rather, not see as the blade touches the pin so infrequently. Stop blushing, Basia please; you deserve all my praise. Did you use a smoke machine in the video? I could not decide if you did or if it was on the computer only? Thank you, Steve xx

Brass is such a difficult material to work with. Great job on the sawing!!!I have to ask, did you file or sand the edges of the dragon symbol after sawing or just go straight to solder?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing2 жыл бұрын
I filed the outer edges only, not the ones inside. That's why I used 7/0 saw blade, which is almost the finest one. It leaves the edges failry clean. I thought that working with brass will be very difficult, but it turned out to be easier than I expected. It depends on the thickness of the metal, but the sheet I worked with was around 0.70mm and it was alright :)

Hiya Basia, I knew I would forget to say somethings; Your bench lathe, with that wonderful extractor, is it the Foredom one? I'm envious of you! It's the one I wanted, in fact, very much wanted. I trained as an electrician in a mostly factory based enviroment so most of my work was enginering based. Working a lot with copper rather than brass. I asumed brass, as a harder metal would be maybe harder to saw, like you thought too, interseting that it was not. Copper was always a pain, cloging up the teeth of the saw and getting so hot. I like that brass, even though it contains a lot of copper is different. That pendant is so hot, thank you for sharing it with us. Stay safe, Steve xx
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing2 жыл бұрын
It's from Pepetools and the hood is by Foredom :) Both are great. Is the hood the one you wanted? I totally agree with you, I don't like copper. Tried sawing it a few times, not a fan. I found brass to be much easier with sawing! Surprisingly so. Though, it could also be because of the blades (Nano blades from Pepe). I'm being completely honest, not doing an AD. I'm very impressed by how they handled this. Thank you so much! I'm happy you like the pendant :)) ❤

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingyes brass is easy to saw and file, well to be worked in all ways, it's why it was made. Yes, that is the hood I'll be getting I think. I love the Durston machines, but not those prices. I've been going through Cookies tool lists, or toy lists even and putting them on a wish list. Nice to dream. Do you watch the Jewellers Academy podcast, or even listen? The latest is a jeweller from LA who uses TicToc and was talking about how it boosts her sales. Yet again I've forgotten her name and her shop name. Her jewellery is very good though. Mostly cabs in silver or gold fill mounts. Though she has started welding gold chains on people's wrists or ankles as permanent jewellery, often friendship with two people getting the same. The welding is not hot, very localised to the metal only. Not cheap to set up though. Steve xx

Did you need to file any of the edges you used the saw on? I'm betting no! Is the Platinol getting old, a bit like me? Why out of brass? Other than you do have a lot of it? lol. Yet again you have shown that your own skill, coupled with constant practice does make for very accurate sawing, but you are the best at it!!! Steve xx
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing2 жыл бұрын
I only needed to file the outer edges :) All of the edges were pretty clean and smooth because I used almost the finest saw blade (7/0). Platinol seems still very ok! I[ve had it for at least a couple of years. I always keep it closed tightly, in additional zip bag and in a dark place. I started to like brass a lot! It's pretty, cheaper than silver, and yes, indeed, I have a lot of it, after my accidental massive order haha :D Thank you so much Steve xx

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingYou're very welcome, dear lady, Steve xx
@nadyahrisimova52932 жыл бұрын
What is the thickness of the metal sheets you are using? I have noticed that it is more difficult to saw brass than silver, ...so many broken saw blades 😟. Does the size of the jeweler’s saw blade depends also on the type of metal?
@stephencoster95322 жыл бұрын
Hiya Nadya, I've never found that. Just try to make sure you have 3 teeth in the metal at any one time. The blade information has how many teeth per inch or mm then use the thickness of the metal to work out. most blades are broken when you change direction, so always go extra slow, work the blade up and down to form a very small pocket, enough to turn the tiny blade then slowly rotate the piece while still sawing, slowly. Keep the saw upright, most especially at turning points. If it catches, stop, and release the metal from where you are holding it down, it will swing to where the teeth are pointing, re-start sawing, again slowly. I may have said 'slowly' a lot but it is one of the most important points for me, do not rush!!! Lubricate the blade frequently, and you will learn to feel when it needs more. Beeswax is always recommended. Learn to love it as Basia has and you will soon be doing as well as her. Stay safe, Steve...
@nadyahrisimova52932 жыл бұрын
@@stephencoster9532 Hi, thanks for the tips. I think I am missing exactly "be slowly" part. I always tend to rush... and also the 3 teeth rule ...😅 Thank you again!

@@nadyahrisimova5293you are very welcome, I believe we need to help each other. I started reading books on smithing and then watching KZbin videos with help in the comments just like this. I know from what she has said that Basia has gone the same way, plus a few short courses. It can indeed work and work well, just get as much help as you can as and when you can. The old saying; The only stupid question is the one you didn't ask! It's true. Steve...
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing2 жыл бұрын
Steve already gave a perfect answer and great points! I will just add to it that I did think that sawing in brass may be more difficult than in silver. But surprisingly it wasn't! I haven't noticed much of a difference and I'd say it was still pretty smooth, however (another good point by Steve), I noticed that the most important point was NOT TO RUSH and take my time. If I noticed that the blade was pulling on the metal, I was slowing down, taking a moment to re-adjust the direction of my saw frame and blade, to grip my metal better and just take is slow. And that's because I was using nearly the finest blade, the 7/0 (not sure if I kept the 3 teeth rule, but rather was going for the finest finish on the cut). Since I wouldn't be able to access many areas to clean them, I wanted to make sure that the edges would be as smooth as possible after cutting, which can be achieved by using finer blades. You got this! Just take your time and don't feel intimidated. And don't worry if you break blades, it's absolutely fine :)
@stephencoster95322 жыл бұрын
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingwith a 7/0 I think you probably had 5 or 6 teeth in at a time with the saw upright. That is why the higher number blades cut so smoothly is the increase in the number of teeth in the metal at one time. A 2/0 blade would have larger teeth and cut a more jagged cut. Think of your files, the more teeth the smoother the finish you get. Enjoy the learning, the more you practice the better you get, like Basia. Steve...
