Jack of all trades and occasional blacksmith here. I made a grappling hook once and I got around the delamination problem when drifting the eye by making two of the tines of one piece. I was using round stock, so I tapered both ends of a double length piece, bent it over, tacked the two shorter pieces to the sides 'in the groove', then welded. Then I had a nice heavy duty eye at the bottom all ready to drift open. Gave it to a college friend who fancied himself a bit of a ninja. Sadly before the age of digital cameras, so no pictures, but I think it turned out nice. One trick I've found too when punching through a weld that you might consider (assuming you don't already know, but I haven't seen you use it) is to first forge it round, give it several twists hot, square it off, then punch. That way you're going through all the welds obliquely, and they're less likely to delaminate.

I am not a blacksmith but would you rather have it wiggle and get placed where it doesn't belong either? I'd say this is more due to the fact of generally a little to improper safety equipment including clothing for work in the shop.

Non-ironic Dorito i dont think that would work, because most of that metal will be oxidized (idk if thats the word or spelling), and it will be an unknown mix of metals, so that may be a problem too (Im not a blacksmith, so it may work, and if it does it would be a rly fun project to see indeed ^^)

While forge welding is emotionally satisfying, a more efficient method would be to take a 1" bar and either saw it or hot cut it into 4 half inch squares from one end; then forge the other end down and punch the eye. Once that's done, go back and bend 3 of the ends out of the way while you taper the remaining one. Repeat for each of the other 3 and finally shape them as you did the forge welded one. Trusting one's life to a forge weld when you have options is never a good idea.

It's nice to see how young people still find blacksmithing a cool thing to do. Also, if you want some advice on your future sword, I'm gonna suggest you make one out of normal steel first before you use Damascus. I'd also say look into some of Chandler Dickinson's vids. He's a "Show as I go" blacksmith youtuber like you, that's really informative in his videos. He put out a 'making my first sword' vid a while back that you might be interested in.

Would a twist at the forge weld make the weld stronger via an increase in surface area of the weld? Also, sorry about the hot scale down your back. You could even rig up a little portable shower for a dousing station. Love your work!
