What a beauty! Yes please, do a video on weight and balance, I screwed up my last batch of crankbaits by not giving them enough weight (I used balsa and I don't have a precise scale yet), I'm sure they will work once I finish them but they will float back up way too fast. I like them floating up fast because I fish a lot of shallow areas (2 - 4ft of water) with lots of rocks and branches underwater but I don't think these will want to dive below 1.5ft with all that balsa pulling them up, even with bigger bibs.

These micro digital scales are surprisingly not that expensive. They are readily available on eBay and Amazon. The cheap one that I have purchased 8 years ago is very accurate and precise. The readings repeatability is very good. Looks the new once now days are even cheaper.

Hello, Franco! A great video once again! And with a very interesting topic of building a suspending lure. Thank you very much! And thanks for explaining the UV resin problems in such detail! I will definitely try applying a water-based protective finish as mid-coat. Sadly, there is no Minwax here in Serbia, Europe. Not sure about the clear coats for the airbrush though, since I haven't leveled up to the airbrush yet. I think it's a great idea to do a Master Class on weight and balance. The Master Class on crankbaits was very informative, and I keep going back to it, so it would be great to have a similar material on weight and balance. Again, thank you very much for the videos! I really appreciate the time and effort you put into making them and sharing your knowledge and experience.
@nicholasholmes350011 ай бұрын
Hey! I noticed you said you don't have min-wax in Serbia. I think I know how you can solve your problem. There are a few videos on KZbin explaining the difference between lacquer, polyurethane and polyacrilic. That product POLYCRILIC is a water based polyacrilic coating. You can likely find a comparable product with the info from those videos. Hope this helps!
@blackwood143111 ай бұрын
@@nicholasholmes3500 thank you very much! I already looked for polyacrylic coatings earlier when Franco answered my question about blemishes in the UV resin, and I found some manufactured in Serbia, but I doubt they are the same quality as the Min-wax. But will try it out, definitely!

You've helped me in weighting a couple lures through email and in the comment section on videos, not to mention all the invaluable information you've provided in videos themselves. I can now calculate how much weight is needed for lures because of all your guidance. But I confess that I would benefit from a course focused on weighting and balancing. I'm sure there is a lot I don't know. Various lure styles are weighted differently, knowing how to properly balance them will be a big help! Does this master class come with a workbook? 🙂

I have always imagined a suspending lure are probably very difficult and requires field adjustment as each body of water will be different. A master class on weight and balance would be really good. It would be nice to know what the min and max weights are relative to the action one trying to achieve. Thank you so much.

I watched an older video where you made a soft plastic swimbait with an internal wire truss using Plastisol. I wonder if you've ever considered molding one out of a firmer but still "soft" material like a shore A 50-60 polyurethane. It seems like it would hold up better and mixing and pouring it is similar to the 2-part hard resins you're used to. I've used it to mold things like motor mount bushings and it's tough stuff.
@EngineeredAngler11 ай бұрын
Sure its doable, but there are some limiting drawbacks to how dense it is.
@mike126111 ай бұрын
Is it considered cheating to make a "five inch" lure from a "ruler"??? 🤣🤣🤣 You made a pretty general statement about Isopropyl Alcohol having a lot of water in it and I don't know the answer, so I'm asking. I purchased 99.9% IPA specifically for ultrasonic cleaning. Does it have a low enough water content for this use? Thanks so much! Hey Franko, using soap to prevent bubbles! 😂 Who'da thought? I've finally got a grip on calculating the amount of lead needed to weight lures and then you drill a huge cavity in the center of yours... Do you have to make and kind of consideration for the difference of the air space verses the buoyancy of the wood you removed, or is it too insignificant to worry about? I would think that every factor matters when shooting for suspending. Thank you again! Love the magnet idea! You have enough BBs in the cavity, that if a couple got stuck they'd still work well, but using the magnet increases the chance of full functionality. 🙂 Thank you for the information about clear-coat buoyancy. It has been a long-time question in my head and you confirmed what I was believing. However, I didn't realize the difference in adding volume to the outside, vs internal. Sorry for the longest post ever. This episode have been very inspiring!!! Great looking lure and super action! VERY interested in the Master Class!!! 😎

Hey Franco. I love your videos! You've been my main inspiration to start building my own lures. I guess I'm a bit late to the punch on clear coat questions, but I was wondering - do you ever use 2 part epoxy as your final coat? Why? Why not? Why do you prefer UV resing? And how do you feel they compare to the UV resin? Thanks!
@EngineeredAngler11 ай бұрын
Here's the list of all the reasons I prefer UV Epoxy and don't use 2 part epoxy any more: No mixing, Much faster cure time, Can recoat in less that 30 min., Sets much harder, Less likely to yellow, easier to control bubbles, If things are not going well, just wipe off before you expose to uv light and start again.

Is it necessary to have the bait split into two to carve out each side to make the rattle? Can’t you just carve out a cavity in the belly like you would the weight and just seal it up?
@EngineeredAngler11 ай бұрын
It's much easier.

Hello Franco, I have had issues with the UV resin peeling off on my, I fish a lot of rocks and assumed that was at least part of it, but after watching the QOW segment maybe there is more too it. In most cases the clear comes off with the paint or some of the paint so maybe it is more that the rocks. in addition to making sure the paint is drying fully is it also possible the casting resin is not fully cured? Most times i give it a couple of hours after casting to start painting and i'm wondering it that could be enough.
@EngineeredAngler11 ай бұрын
The casting resin takes a few days to fully cure. You can hurry the process by baking it at 190 deg. F for two hours, then clean it well with alcohol. If you are only allowing 2 hours before you paint then that is most likely the problem.

Every time I see these videos where the clear coat is brushed on I cannot help but think if I tried that I would have huge ugly brush marks.
@HHH-nv9xb11 ай бұрын
When that happens, I shoot the lure with a heat gun. It soften the clear coat (runny) and the brush marks disappears. Of course the lure is on the turner.

I give the UV resin a few minutes turning in the curing chamber with the lights off, this lets the resin self levels perfectly and the bubbles go way too. Then I turn the lights on and usually get perfection.
