In this video I'll be making a killer shrimp aquarium, an aquarium for the invasive gammarid Dikerogammarus villosus. This video shows the creation of the aquarium and explains why the killer shrimp is so invasive.
Enjoy!

I remember going on a fishing trip as a kid and we accidentally left our live bait bucket half way full with some lake water. Many many months later I grabbed for the same bait bucket and only about half an inch of water was left. Inside the water was a handful of massive adults of a same or similar species. They must have had an entire generation breed, grow, and eat each other for those last few to survive. Freaked me out as a kid to see that lol.

I'm glad you said you thought they were kinda cute, because I was starting to feel like I was a little insane for feeling the same. Weirdly, the demon shrimp gave me stronger bug vibes. I mean I get they're all kinda just sea bugs, but like... the killer shrimp scuttling around was legitimately sorta adorable.

(In case it wasn't apparent, bugs are creepy and I don't like them. Demon shrimp retaining some of its terrestrial cousins' creepiness in a way I can't really put my finger on. Maybe it was just that you picked out cuter clips of the killer shrimp idk.)

I just found out that someone is using mantis shrimp to make a new camera. If you have heard of the mantis shrimp before, this might seem like a good idea as the mantis shrimp can see a wider range of colors than we can. And just to give perspective, we can see 3 base colors, red, blue and yellow, the mantis shrimp can see 12 base colors. Again, this all seems good and well, and even might get you too think something like ''it would be so amazing to see other colors'', until you stop for a second and realise that even if we make a camera that can see these 12 base colors, we can still only see 3

It is always fun and inspiring to see your uploads. Have you ever considered adding some sort of movement such as rocking or a current to any of your aquariums to more accurately simulate certain environments? I imagine some organisms depend upon (or at least thrive better within) such conditions, especially sessile ones.

Hey, just had a question about my aquatic ecosystem. Its in a smallish, sealed jar that's in front of a window that gets light a good portion of the day. It has some mosses in it and some plants, but those are the only things that i can see alive in the jar. Its been around about a month since i made it, and no crazy stuff yet. Also, the bottom is filled with a sort of mixture of sand/dirt, its the only stuff i could find near the pond i got it from. I know sand is bad because not much lives in it but if you had any advice i would appreciate it. My working theory is its either not enough light, (but if it isn't enough then why are the plants fine?) the sand made it so i didn't get enough life in to start, i might have overcrowded the jar with too much in it, or its not been enough time.
@nefariousyawn

Sometimes you have to go looking for more critters. I'm no expert, but if it were me I would make a few more jars - see what variables you can adjust, such as moisture level, sunlight, or source your substrate from a different location. Under old and decaying wood is usually a good place to get things like isopods and springtails.

@@nefariousyawn hey no worries, I've made a couple jars previously and have isolated some issues and corrected them, but rather then guess and check for another couple months I thought id consult the internet. The problem with getting my substrate from a different location is that everywhere i seem to go has either shitty clay or crappy sand. I live in Georgia. Thanks for your advice.
