Making a sheath for a seax style knife I forged recently. I decided to make this one a little different. This sheath is inspired by patterns for western holsters. Particularly what is known as a Mexican loop or single loop holster.

It does all depend on what machine you have. Unlike with household sewing machines there is no standard size and length for industrial machine needles. The other thing you may encounter is different points. Ball point needles are used for woven materials like heavy cloth or webbing. Diamond point or S point needles are usually for leather and have a tip like a stitching awl.

Great video! A little trick that I use on my machine sewing is to place the cut out of the welt back in to the cut out until after sewing, this leaves the leather all it the same level, your foot doesn't fall into the divit (void) area as you sew. Easier to keep your sewing line straight.

I haven't really had that problem on this sewing machine, but I do know what you are talking about. My first machine was a Tippmann and it did that. Might be worth doing anyway because it would keep the welt pieces from shifting inward and making the sheath too tight.

You can also sandwich a softer (fusible lining) material between the skin and the window filled shape. This creates a pillow effect and can come in handy sometimes. Either way, your suggestion is an excellent one for making these type of sheaths.

As usual great video and beautiful work. U mentioned you're sewing machine I just got my first one and was wondering what size needle and thread do you use? Do u use the same sizes for heavier weight projects as u do for the thinner ones?

What I normally use the most is a size 26 needle with #346 bonded nylon thread as my top thread. Something I started doing on the advice of a saddle maker when I first got a machine is to use a smaller thread on the bottom, so the bobbin thread is #277. The machine I have works well down to about 6 ounces of leather. Anything thinner than that I use a singer industrial machine with #69 thread, or just hand stitch.

Hello, very nice work and nice video. I followed your knot video and thanks to your amazing guidance was able to get a nice handle for a project. Besides that you've inspired me to try my hand at sheath making. I believe I have the bare minimum of necessary tools. One thing I was wondering is, do you buy your leather locally or is there a decent place on the internet to get quality? In my town we only have 2 shops that deal with leather but I believe their prices may be inflated. I was just wondering about how you yourself obtain your leather (if locally, no need to go into specifics, if that's the case I may have to look around for local product myself.)

For anything that is going to be tooled I like to use Hermann oak leather that I usually order from Springfield Leather company. Another good quality tooling leather to look for is Wickett and Craig. In my opinion it's worth paying more for good quality materials. I do buy some leather from Tandy but only in person so I can pick it out myself. I think their craftsman grade of leather is only useful as a lining leather and is not for tooling. Weaver leather supply is also a good source for leather.

I don't know. I just make what I think will be a good handle and don't worry about what to call it. The flair and curve of the handle makes it kind of similar to a revolver's grip.
