@@PotteryCrafters Wow!! Did not know - thank you for the link! I am still very new and learning, with sooo far to go! Still challenged by cylinders - have made a few mediocre mugs and innumerable little bowls, pencil holders, etc that were originally meant to be mugs. Don't have as much time as I'd like. Oh - and have used your reclaiming technique with a pillowcase!

How long do you wait after you make the mug, to dry enough to trim it/ become leather hard?
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 2 жыл бұрын
That is a very good question, Emily. This would depend on the climate you live in and the wetness of the clay. It can take as little as a few hours or until the next day. If you can't keep an eye on it make sure you wrap it in plastic or put it in a damp box. Once the clay has stiffened up enough to be able to handle it without marking it up with your fingers you can trim. 😊

It depends on the temperature you can fire it and the ingredients in it. These are some of the glazes I use potterycrafters.com/recommended-tools-best-glazes/ Hope this helps 😊

Be careful not to get clay too soft like porcelain and to rough like a lot of grog in it. This should also help potterycrafters.com/best-pottery-clay-for-beginners/😍

How many layers of glazes do you use? I am a teacher of molded ceramics in a local rec center. I pour the ceramics and clean and fire them to bisque. So it's low fire. There's no way to put that many coats on them. But my people love doing ceramics. But I'm hooked on pottery but no time for it. Thanks so much.
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters 3 жыл бұрын
I like pouring also. I mainly Pour on the base layer then I do the rim dipping so the glaze flows down. I was afraid to do it at first and had so many pieces that didn't have enough glaze. So I made me some cookies and went for it with surprisingly great results. I dip around 3 times. Sometimes I dip up to 5 times. 😍 I do fire to cone 5 so I don't know how it would turn out with low fire glaze. I look for glazes that say float, separate, or flow. I hope this helps😊 Happy Glazing. Check out my yarn bowl video where I glaze it at the end. That recipe is one of my favorites. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3ulnaeXi9miaLs

I am so struggling trying to make a mug. Every time I throw, it ends up in a bowl shape, not straight up and down , Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong? 😊 Help 😂
@PotteryCrafters
@PotteryCrafters Жыл бұрын
Hi Lil Queenie. Yes, that is very common. When you are throwing, try and tilt your fingers inward. Plus, after every throw, collar in your clay with both hands. Make sure your hands are wet. Let me know how it goes. 😊

@PotteryCrafters your a life saver, just the tilting of the fingers made a big difference I now have a small but cylinder shape wouldn't call it a mug but it's close lol, Thank you for the advice! I watch your hands very carefully trying to learn the best ways to hold my fingers and hands, now if I can figure out how to keep them as clean as yours I know I will be on to something 😉 😊 I get covered in slip and chunks 😆 🤣

That is great to hear. You're funny. My hands get just as dirty. 😍I keep wiping them clean. Remember to keep even pressure with your fingers as you are pulling up the clay and not too much at a time. Let's stay dirty!!
