This is one very satisfying machining job! Today we are making new hydraulic cylinder piston for the Apron Lift cylinder off a Caterpillar 651 Wheel Tractor Scraper. This shows the satisfying step by step process of making the new hydraulic cylinder pistons. We are starting with a solid piece of 245mm diameter 1045 high tensile steel and begin by machining and roughing down the material, we then drill and bore out the centre before boring a 7° degree taper to suit the cylinder rod. With the machining complete on the ID of the piston we then complete the OD of the piston including machining the pressure seal and wear band grooves. Another job done, thanks for watching!
In this video we are using our Hafco TM-26120G Centre Lathe.

Lovely to see the dual purpose gauging block for the taper thread, that also serves as drive shaft, proving the taper is perfect by not having any slip at all. Great work there, and also on getting all those measurements spot on. I would guess the piston that is recoverable would be good to machine up as a temporary "get you out of a bind" unit, so the mine owner can have it on the shelf to put in while waiting for the fix, with him knowing that this one will fail after a while, and not worry too much about the worn cylinder and rod, as those will all have to be done together, but at least he is not a machine down for a week or two, just 4 hours to replace a cylinder with a more or less working one while Kurtis does his magic and makes the old and busted shiny and new again.

Plumber by 'civvy' trade, did some work years ago for a 'Dentist', gave him a quote, he accepted, I did the job, all good, Aaaah No ! When I presented him his bill at completion in the office, in front of his clients in waiting area, he decides with his 'obvious education' that I did Not take as long with the job as he thought I quoted for, so he wanted a 'discount' ? The 'Plumber', at this stage was all hot and sweaty from working out in the Sun for a number of hours, then asked the 'Dentist' with the 'obvious education', in a loud ,not threatening, voice if he gave discounts to his 'clients' if he got the job over quicker than expected ? The 'clients' in the waiting room were looking expectantly at the 'Dentist' with the 'obvious education' for his reply, he proceeded to almost break the receptionist's hand getting the cheque book off her to sign it and tell her to fill out the details, as he left the receptionist asked him if it was for the amount on the invoice, he grunted 'yes' and left ! I left a room full of smiling 'clients' and moved on ? Two jobs done at the same time, should have charged him extra for the F#%k About ?

Thanks for all the videos, you have produced some very high-quality, entertaining and informative work. I especially enjoy the narration, your explanations help so much to add interest. I'm also a fan of IC Weld, and his narration is top-notch, like yours (cool that he sent you that cap!). It's midnight here in California, US, and since I can't sleep, seeing your new video appear, posted a minute ago, my time, brought a smile to my face. Thanks also for the great camera work. The varied angles, slow-mo & other speed variations all add to the production quality. Your dog and the bloopers all add a light touch, and the humor is much appreciated, these are not great days here in the US. I ended up in a technology career, but I still remember taking shop classes in high school, metal shop, wood shop, print shop & electronics. Building simple things, soldering, etc. was really fun, and I regret that I was not able to do more of that professionally. So, I hope your business thrives, and you & your wife have a long dual career, as video producers and machinists. You seem to enjoy your work, so I hope that continues, too. My _favorite_ part of the machinist videos is the close-up of the dial indicator, _after_ the part is running true. It is _amazing_ to see that needle rock steady. The dial states that each line indicates 1/100th of a mm. That needle seems not to move at all, but if it does it is within ± 1000th of an mm. I smile and feel such pleasure at seeing how any competent machinist can do that. Humans are stunningly good at such precision.

Manufacturing tapers can be precision engineering as even a slight mismatch on the initial slide setting can be disastrous when assembling the parts. We manufactured a 21 speed gearbox used in the manufacturing of steel rope, fascinating to watch how it is all wound together. This gearbox had the input gears on tapered shafts which were also keyed and locked into position with a locking nut. Turning a taper in the gear and on the shaft was good engineering practice as we did not make too many of these gearboxes. Thanks for posting.

Word! I know of a certain someone on YT that would stop all operations if some stringy swarf appear for a brief moment, and then spend "an hour" trying out all kinds of inserts, feed and speed rates to avoid it... I guess there is some learning aspect in that, but boy does it get boring after a while.

Genuine question. Have the youtube videos ever bought new business/new customers your way? Has anyone ever called you up and said we have seen your work on youtube and want you to fix stuff for us? Or do you just make the videos for the hell of it? Nice work as always, keep it up.

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering It is so difficult to find a high quality machine shop and seeing the poor quality repairs that you fix everyday. If you were local people would be stupid not to try and get you to do their work. And if we could watch videos of the work that every shop completes before hiring them life would be grand.

Sometimes when reassembling a cylinder the wear bands were a tad undersize (or the groove in the piston was slightly deeper) so I'd go rummaging through all the new old stock parts we had kept in the attic to find one which would take up the slack to eliminate the sag in a fully extended assembly. Handy to never chuck away any unused components. 🤨

Hi Kurt and Karen, I had to look up ASMR, I totally get it! I'm still working through your previous episodes and it's great to see how you have progressed from your early days. I received my merch in the UK other day and the shirt is great! I'm learning loads from watching your videos and I can't wait to get my own mini lathe. If you've not done one yet, I would like to see an episode where you show your toolings, especially the shop built ones and explain their functions and maybe how long certain jobs take to complete? 😊👍

Good video, great job creating the new pistons. Nice grind on the 2" drill bit, even without a through pilot hole it made a nice chip all the way through, I also noticed the coolant was fresh. I've never seen a parting/grooving tool used sideways for a distance like you did for the wear band, I learned something new.

It would be great when you tell us the dimensions of stock metal if you could also give us an approximate weight. Take the dimensions and compute the number of cubic inches. Multiply by ,2836 to get the weight in pounds. You will have to do the math to figure the conversion in metric.
@keithammleter3824
@keithammleter3824 Жыл бұрын
@@davidsellars646 In metric, it's even easier. Steel is 7850 kg per cubic metre, i.e. 7.85 gramme per cc. For a cylindrical shape, take the length in cm, multiply that by the diameter in cm, and multiply that by 0.01937 (0,01937 is pi squared /4 X density of steel i.e., 3.1416^2 / 4 X 0.00785.) For most purposes, you can just multiply length x diameter x 0.02. For aluminum use 0.00344 instead of 0.02. Actually, CAD systems give you the mass automatically as can many digital readout panels with a calculator function.

Just had an idea while watching the 2 banana drilling operation (probably crap idea that won't work🤣). If the spindle speed of the lathe and the camera frame rate were matched just right you could have the chuck appear stationary whilst the drill is diving into the material with swarf spewing out from it. (Insert comments re this is a bad idea that won't work here). Now onto the rest of the vid 👍

@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Quick back of the envelope calculation for 30fps: These numbers divided by spindle speed must result in a whole number: 3 jaw chuck - 5400 4 jaw chuck - 7200 (Probably wrong, but seems to make sense to me at the time 🤔)

If the video is 30 FPS then a RPM of 300 would do the trick. Any whole number multiple of the frame rate works, I think.
@kempy666999
@kempy666999 Жыл бұрын
@@OhHeyTrevorFlowers Agreed. My logic was to consider the number of chuck jaws as well - as long as the camera is "stopping" the action every 1/3 or 1/4 rotation (3 vs 4 jaw) that should work. A scan of some vids revealed that the "big lathe" has speeds of 540 and 720 rpm available. Could be worth a try.
