Making a Pair of Bandsaw Boxes

These bandsaw boxes are made from one block of laminated cherry. The handles are made of walnut. I decided to use the table saw for the through cuts so that I could get a more precise and smooth cut. Together, the boxes are about 8" x 12" x 4.5". Thanks for watching!

I built your single drawer curved box tonight. I'm really happy with the way it's looking. I'm going to try this build next. I started with scroll saw boxes, bandsaws are way faster and I like that you can do bigger boxes in way less time

Very nice. I've seen a lot of 'non saw specific' boxes (trying to be PC here, so as to not offend anyone's delicate sensibilities LOL) and this is definitely the most eye pleasing design yet. The only thing that would make it cooler would be the addition of hidden magnets in the adjoining sides, so that the two units lock together with a satisfying 'snap'.

Top job mate You got a new sub. I don't care that you didn't use the table saw for everything. You used it how I would have if I was making a similar box. Straight cuts are much quicker and neater on a table saw

Thanks for the comment. The only downside to the table saw for the straight cuts is the extra material lost compared to a bandsaw blade. It effects the grain continuity a bit but its not too bad.

Thanks! Yup I mostly use a 1/4” 6tpi blade. I’ve also used 3/8” 4tpi. They work well if you don’t need to make tight curves.

Thanks! I like it a lot. Got it in craigslist to replace a really old Delta. I think this is one of the, if not the, best planers before upgrading to a floor standing model. I think the biggest complaints are it's weight (I don't move mine), the noise (wear ear pro), and the blades. I make a lot of stuff and don't change the blades too often. Thinking about upgrading to a helical head though.

Angie Overton Thanks Angie! For most of my boxes I use a 1/4" 6tpi blade. You can also use a 3/16", 3/8", or 1/2" depending on the curves you need to cut.

Thanks Simon! For these boxes I used a few coats of danish oil. Flood the surface, let it sit for 5 minutes, and wipe it dry. Repeat as needed.

How do I print the template actual size? Or, what are the height x width x depth of the box?

The box is 12" x 8" and the depth can be whatever you like but I usually go with about 4.5". I had to print it on two sheets of paper and tape them together.

Thanks for the comment. The bearings are there to keep the blade in line so if they aren't spinning it means the blade is on the right course.

I typically us 1/4" 6 tip blades for my boxes. If they're all straight cuts, I'll go to 3/8" or 1/2" 3 or 4 tpi. For tighter boxes I'll drop to a 3/16" blade.

At 1:30 what are you running through the jointer? It hard to tell what face is being milled. I have made this box once before preparing to make it again. This time I want to contrast the drawer faces. Not sure if I should veneer the fronts or pattern bit and route a new front. What do you think? Awesome work

At 1:30 it’s the bottom face of that top block. I’ve never done contrasting drawers but think either option would work. Simon Roy of Roy’s Boxes used to do a lot of contrasting drawers I think. He might be someone to look at for that.

Wow. Is all I can say. First time viewer and newest subscriber. I can only WISH I could do that. Just retired and starting to collect tools. And now I have a goal to achieve..... to make my first bandsaw box, but will be starting off a lot simpler than this amazing creation. Was that just a simple common type of “crazy glue” you used along with the wood glue on the drawer pulls? What size blade do you suggest for bandsaw. 1/8”?

Thanks Mr. B! Ya, it's just a normal superglue which help secure the piece quickly while the wood glue can dry. Sometimes its tough to get clamps on small handles like that so the superglue makes due. I prefer 1/4" 6tpi blades for most of my boxes. If there are only straight cuts, I'll use a 3/8" or 1/2". If its a mini box, I might jump down to a 3/16". 1/8" are too small to cut through that thick of material; the blade drifts too much.

Thanks Ryan. For most of my boxes I used a 1/4" 6tpi blade from Timberwolf. At times I'll also use 3/16", 3/8", and 1/2". It all depends on the design of the box and radius of the curves.

Sorry for the delay. The 1/4" is the only one that's 6 tpi. The other sizes are a mix of 3 and 4 tpi.

Your the ONLY person I've seen on YT that addresses the problem of the drawers not being flush with the main body, because the drawers have two kerfs cut when the front and back are cut off. Looks like you glued shims to the back of the drawer then planed them until they were just the right thickness to make the drawer flush in front?

Yup that’s how I typically did it when I started. You can also use small, adhesive-backed felt pads. They’re easy to apply and you are able to slice a layer or two off if needed. I learned this from Roy’s Box on Instagram/youtube.
