Reballing is the one repair I never got into in my 360/PS3 days. I still have an important Japanese PS3 I need to fix. Whenever I get my repair setup up and running again will take a stab at it

I'm always so impressed when I see this done. I've done my fair share of soldering / micro soldering / component level repair.... but this feels intimidating to me. I have never done BGA type rework, don't have a rework station... etc but I'd be very interested to try a 40nm rsx swap. The whole process is so interesting to me. Question if you don't mind: why do you let the board "bake" overnight? I don't know that I've seen anyone else who does this do that? Or maybe I'm just missing that part / not paying enough attention?
@Techbabblers
@Techbabblers 5 ай бұрын
I had issues with my machine (might be because its an IR machine and not HOT AIR). Reworking standards state that the boards should be baked to remove any moisture from the boards so that way they won't popcorn. I only run into this issue with certain PS3 boards, as I don't bake 360's or OG Xbox boards, so I just go it to avoid any popcorning that can kill the board or certain functionality on it.

Since typically 3034 is due to the faulty 90NM RSX, for that, I would say yes, a 65/40NM would fix that, along with replacing TOKINS, you should have a solid console for a long time.

Hi, I just watched your video and it was awesome! By the way, I also have an ACHI IR RPO SC and I was wondering if you could share your profile settings with me. I am new to this and any extra help would be greatly appreciated. For my settings, I start the top heat when the motherboard temperature reaches 160°C and then have the top heat start at 170°C. I hold two minutes between every ramp which is 10°C, for example, between 170°C to 180°C to 190°C it waits 2 minutes. I think that gives the motherboard lots of time to catch up and sit. I would love to hear back from you. Thank you!

Sure, i'll post my full profile in a bit, but my targets are 190 200 210 220 230 I can lift lead free off at ~218 so usually before the last step Leaded goes on ~188 so somewhere between the 190 & 200 step. I'll edit this with my full profile shortly.

@@Techbabblers Thank you for your message. I am currently in the process of baking a PlayStation 3 motherboard at 104°C for 24 hours. I am doing this before the reflow process. Although 104°C may seem like an odd number, it is the closest temperature that my oven can run for 12 hours continuously. I am using the profiles from Ripfelix's video that I have slightly modified. I am working on a 40nm sawp. I am excited to see your complete profile.

@@Techbabblers I have another question. My question is how to properly use the preheater when working with PlayStation 3 motherboards. If I were removing the RSX, what would be the final temperature that I want the motherboard to preheat to? I like to preheat my motherboard to the correct temperature before the top heat is on. Also, when monitoring motherboard temperatures, do I put my thermal probe on the top or bottom of the motherboard? I am using the ACHI IR PRO SC, just like you. I am trying to remove the 90nm RSX and replace it with a 40nm on a backward-compatible PlayStation 3. I would greatly appreciate your response. Thank you.

So I have an ACHI-IR PRO-SC and this is the profile i've been using for the past 6 months with advice from Vyktor with a few tweaks and have had zero issues with my reballs on PS3's ever since. I have my bottom heater set at 280 and keep it at that until top temp reaches 160, then i lower to 270 at 180, 260 at 190, 250 at 200, 240 at 210 and I usually just leave it there. For top heater these are my settings as of now, you can adjust the times up or down to make sure you are hitting the target temps. I also have my top heater aobut 1.5 - 2 inches away from the motherboard. For example, for L1, I have to have it run a bit longer in the winter to reach 160 since its colder in my basement. I am also using two TC for the top, one which is attached to the ACHI and one that is external. My bottom TC is also touching the bottom of my PS3 or 360. I can take pictures if needed R1: step L1 0 d1 360 r2 1.00 L2 190 d2 30 r3 1.00 L3 200 d3 25 r4 1.00 L4 210 d4 25 r5 1.00 L5 220 d5 25 r6 1.00 L6 230 d6 25 r7 end hb 230. Even though my L6 is set at 230 for 25 sec, I use the "nudge" test with tweezers, so once my balls are in the liquid state which is around 225, I can lift. For reballing back lead, I usually stop before L4 reaches 210 and when my thermocouple reaches 205, and then I just let it cool on its own from there and have had zero issues. For this, my bottom heater would be 10 degrees lower for all, so 270 until 160, 260 at 170, 250 at 180, 240 at 190 and then i leave it there. I know i'm probably in the minority but I also reball my RSX using my top heater and haven't had any issues thus far, most others use a hot air wand and do it that way, but that'll be up to you. I have another profile for that which is basically L1 210 d1 999 r2 1.00 For this i have my top heater probably an inch or so away, if i go 1.5 - 2 inches, some of my balls tend to drift or merge. Haven't had issues with any of my 40NM reballs thus far, so hopefully this can help you figure out how to dial in your own machine!

@@user-hx7no8ho6n I would preheat to ~160 and then have the top heater kick in. I have on thermocouple for the bottom plates that touch the bottom of the board, and then the top heater probe & one external on each side of the RSX.

Hi, can you help me to identify what is the problem with my PS3,please? the error is 0xA0801002. Thank you jn advance 😊
@Techbabblers

Components Involved: RSX (IC2001 on COK-001) NEC/TOKIN Proadlizers (C6229/C6230/C6231/C6232 on COK-001) Other nearby components of the power block This error is linked to inadequate filtering on the RSX_VDDC power line. A certain range of voltage ripple and noise can trigger this error before it becomes severe enough to cause an RSX_VDDC Power Failure (3004). YLOD's that lead to 1002 errors vary in length, lasting from 2 seconds to only happening during intense games. There are a number of SMD components used in filtering, but the major concern is the NEC/TOKIN proadlizers (capacitors). 1002 errors indicate faulty NEC/TOKINs. Most likely going to be the RSX NEC Tokins.
