I have used the velcro that is labeled 'hi strength' or something like that and it has stuck just fine to my pvc cups. No glue needed. Haven't tried it on the iron cups. Hi! Thanks for the really great video! I wonder if I could ask you a few questions? Those 110v motors, running at about 100rpm, what wattage are they, or what amperage rating does their label say at 110-120v? (how many HP are they?) What angle do you like to turn the cup rims to on your lathe? What adhesive do you like to use to glue the parts of the pads onto the cups? Do those pads cut with a break-away knife? Is that rock sphere being made of Stromatolite? (Kambaba Jasper?) I didn't know we had that here in the U.S.! If you would be so kind as to help me with the technical info, especially the motor specs, I would be very grateful! I wonder if this helps you: I use different diameter PVC couplings to hold my spheres, and I've thought about spray painting some of those couplings. Also, I use some wood stands I have. Thank you so much!
@DirtCleanerVideos5 жыл бұрын
The motors are General Electric "Mina Gear Motor"s 105.7 RPM, 30 lbs torque,single phase, 115 votes, 1.1 amps. I use Gorilla glue to attach the pads. A vice to hold the pads and a coping saw work well enough for trimming them. The rock in the video was found in a copper mine dump (waste pile) in the U.P. (Upper Michigan)
@CuriousEarthMan5 жыл бұрын
@@DirtCleanerVideos Thank you so much for all that information! It really helps me fill in the picture! Do they say "cont." duty for continuous duty, or maybe intermittent? @DirtCleanerVideos5 жыл бұрын
@@CuriousEarthMan These are continuous duty motors. Originally they were used in Xerox copy machines. A couple of times a year I see them for sale on eBay. Between $50 - $150 each. They also need a capacitor.
@CuriousEarthMan5 жыл бұрын
@@DirtCleanerVideos that's pretty much what I have been seeing for a while now! (the prices you mentioned and their being rare) People that talk about $10 or $20 motors from a surplus site, must not be continuous duty, at least none that I found were. The motors you have seem much sturdier, longer lasting. I'm looking at DC motors now to see if any of them will work. I'm hoping to make a trial machine and test it on soft material like marble, limestone or even alabaster or calcite and see how it works before spending 300-$500 on motors and parts. With the info you gave me, plus the cont. duty, I might be able to get close. It really helps having all those pieces of the technical puzzle! I keep saying it, but I really do appreciate all your help! I'd love to go up to the UP sometime! I've been watching the ore docks on KZbin recently lol

Fantastic video. The machine itself looks fairly simple to build, and I understand the brazed diamond coating, and final polishing pads. What I don't get are the in between grit cups. Are those some kind of sintered diamond pads, and are they brazed on or glued on with epoxy. What are the pads called and do they come in those little squares, or have you cut them?
@DirtCleanerVideos6 жыл бұрын
The polishing pads come in 4 and 5 inch, maybe other sizes. They are from the countertop surfacing industry. Some lapidary supply places sell them as well. The difficult part of making one of these is finding the correct type of motor. They are a slow speed gear motor. Anywhere from 100 to 200 rpm works well with this type of sphere maker. The three motors do not need to be the same speed. But watch on eBay and craigslist and occasionally one pops up for sale. Asking prices vary widely. A luck day would be $200. Typically over $500. Covington and Highland Park do manufacture new ones.

Hello, how come there are cracks in the polishing on some of the spheres. Or how do these cracks come in there? What are these cracks exactly?
@DirtCleanerVideos7 жыл бұрын
Rocks get cracks. Some are old cracks that are "healed" over many, many years. Minerals of various types precipitate in and generally, I believe, add beauty to a rock. Some cracks, however, are new to the rock. The action of mining can certainly cause cracks. So can freeze/thaw cycles. Sometimes these types of cracks lead to a failure of the sphere I am working on. Other times they hold together due to the irregularity of the crack.

@@DirtCleanerVideos Thanks for the response! So is this method and type of machine what they use over in China for all the spheres you see for sale on ebay?

The motors are Dayton gearmotors

Wow this is really nice! Any chance you are making a machine to sell?
@DirtCleanerVideos8 жыл бұрын
My machine is an oldie. I made all of the grinding and polishing cups for it. Hope to add a few more machines to my stable this year but don't have plans to sell any. I can, however, sell the polishing cups.
@nathanhawkes68858 жыл бұрын
I would be interested in purchasing a few of your polishing cups

+DirtCleanerVideos at what rate would you sell a set of cups for? That being said three cups to a set?
@DirtCleanerVideos8 жыл бұрын
The price is for an individual cup. Some machines take 2 while others take 3. I can not produce the grinding cups. Polishing cups are available in grits = 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, 10,000(buff) Pipe end" X polishing end" 1" X 1" = $15 each. 1" X 1-1/4" = $17 1" X 1-1/2" = $18 1-1/4" X 2" = $20. Will paint them for no additional cost.

We didn't see how to buf and how creat the sparkling and shining those stones.
@DirtCleanerVideos6 жыл бұрын
You actually did. I just put different polishing pads on the machine all the way up to 10,000 grit. There is no special buffing or additives put on the rock. It is just plain rock, nothing else.

You are lucky. I have to use a chisel to make my spheres.

Interesting. That can work, just takes persistence.

How much is one product cost

Spheres have a big range in price. Depends on the material, size, finish and over all look.

Grinding the corners off would be much faster if you bought a diamond grinding cup wheel for a hand held grinder
@DirtCleanerVideos8 жыл бұрын
I did purchase a 60 wheel and that works better. I may get the hand grinder this August. It all takes time.

In the polishing process I use wet diamond polishing pads with Velcro backers that I purchased at Sphere Heaven .com check it out

I have purchased a few things from them. So far I'm ok with changing the cups for each grit. Gives me a reason to use my metal lathe. (To build the cups)
