Very useful and learning all I can from you and other creators that have and use shapers. I watched Steve Summers set up using a rotor table & indexting fixture to do grear repair back a few years ago. I am fortunate to own a 10in Enco rotory table, but see indexing plates in my near future coming in to our shop. Nice set up Michel and was well shown and explained, Another year has flown by,,crazy after 65 how fast they come & go,,,Bear.

I indexed from a surplus gear that was slightly too large for what I needed, but had the same number of teeth, mounted on the opposite end of the shaft. Moved the ram position out to the index gear to clock the work, then back in to make the cut. Took me three attempts to get it close enough for the file & fiddly fit work. Not the easiest/most ideal way to do it, but it can work when other options are closed to you. J.B. From Oz, Geoffery Croker, and others have experimented with a shaper gear cutting attachment you can build. Looks like a good project to explore. When it works well (meaning, properly set up) , it seems to eliminate a lot of the headaches from using a form tool in a plunge cut.

The method JB uses in his video is what i learned in school, but we never did get diep in to it. On the internet is also not much to find. I will continue experimenting.

Cutting accurate gears is best done with a multi-tooth cutter in the mill. Less shock loads. Also much quicker. But If you use a more accurate, and rigid, template and a stronger index pointer, your way will work. But remember that a real gear tooth is quite a long cutting face, hence high load on the whole of your mounting.

It occurred to me earlier that the clapper is really needed because the automatic feed is timed to move the table while the tool is on the return stroke. Essentially, at some point on its path, it climbs onto the uncut material. As this is not the case with plunging (of course it should be timed to only feed when the ram is in the retracted position) then the clapper function is not really needed , maybe apart from reducing tool wear.
@Rustinox2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, you're spot on.
@nevillebull7164 жыл бұрын
Great video, a suggestion is to perhaps use adapt and use lathe change gears as templates e.g. you want a 40 tooth gear use 80 tooth lathe gear and using every 2nd tooth gives 40

i believe after watching Adam Abom79 that a shear tool works really in in his shaper to give a good surface finish, i modified his idea and made one that works in my lathe, really good on softer metals and produces a finish that resembles a ground part. downside is it only removes a few thou at a time
