You're the only person I could find in a video to use the loop method. Well done! I've been researching how to wrap a 500+ y/o stone axe to a new oak handle with rawhide. It's really hard the 1st time. The rawhide I bought is really thick, and didn't turn out so good. I need to thin it out but it's already on the handle. I'm now trying to find out how to thin the rawhide while it's attached
@kullcraven4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, and good luck with your project, sounds cool. I'm unsure how to thin it sorry.

THIS makes the most sense. After watching a bunch of videos and seeing pictures, I'm like, I'm not so sure. I came up with this idea how they would affix the axe head to the handle (I'm pretty handy and have exp using tools, etc, they need to be rugged.) - good to see some confirmation! I imagine they would have sawed in a notch around the top part of the handle you split for the hide to wrap around. The key is the fit. You need the two parts of the axe handle that you split up top to meet perfectly again, with the raw hide affixed into the groove made for it above the axe head- mating the split super tight- thats DURABLE. That's proper. people wrapping hide around the axe groove affixing it on top of a stick- NOPE. people making a hole below a knot on a stick and friction fitting the stone in- NOPE. This is what I would do. And evidently, you as well. HISTORICAL REFERENCES to your thought process at all? Any links? Or is this a word of mouth thing, did you come up with it on your own?
@kullcraven2 жыл бұрын
The way i wrapped this is historical, or what i have read as historical, on how the stones were secured into handles. I also have used many tools, and i think that knowing how modern tools work and their structure, helps us come with ideas that do work. :) Thanks for the comment and watch.
@JamesRPatrick7 жыл бұрын
If you make the split section of the handle longer, you will have more leverage to squeeze the two sides together. Then trim off the excess wood after the rawhide is wrapped.
@kullcraven7 жыл бұрын
That is very true, it fit well and the shrinking of the rawhide secures it big time. Thanks for checking it out.

Donny Pavolini Outdoors Thanks Donny thought i would share that rawhide idea , I'm happy with the finished axe, and i can always rehalf the head another time if i wish as well. The head wont rust and will last a lifetime , not like i'm going to use it much lol . Just good to know i can make one if i wish or need to.

Hey Wayne, my trick is to boil the wood and wrap it a few turns, let it dry and then hot birch glue and rewrap it. The first turns and dry tighten it, the second rewrap over the glue set it like stone. Great Vid! Love your stuff.
@kullcraven9 жыл бұрын
Rl Badger Very interesting, it hardened on there pretty well. tho would have liked to tighten the top alittle more but it still works. Have never made birch glue, you mean the tar from the bark ?
@rlbadger16989 жыл бұрын
yup birch tar, rabbit poo and ash. Or pine resin, rabbit poo and ash. Never measured just made it.
@kullcraven9 жыл бұрын
Yeah i have made pine and spruce pitch glue many times, with charcoal and deer or rabbit poo and resin. Just never birch.
@rlbadger16989 жыл бұрын
Done both, I think spruce is best.

Wow! What a great idea! I was getting ready to go buy a roll of rawhide string for a project. But after watching your video, I’m going to try this instead! : ) Questions please… You said to keep the rawhide somewhat firm for easier cutting with scissors. How long did you soak the rawhide before unrolling it? Before wrapping your axe, how long did you soak the rawhide string? Did you soak in warm water? Thanks for this great idea! : )
