I am not sure I will ever entirely understand why a piece of wood has such cool action like that without the addition of a lip...so cool to see and yet so hard to understand! ;-)

just fantastic watching you create a lure but not used to watching you without speaking. I like it better with the commentary and antics its more fun. I just saw the date 2017 you have gone a long way and still awesome keep it up.

The no talking just creeps me out.
@labtrainer093 жыл бұрын
Remember this one, Nate? It was during your early, "silent-film" era, and unlike the commenters below, the lack of talking didn't bother me. Rather, it made me focus on what you were DOING, as opposed to what you were saying. There are certainly segments that still bring a smile to my face-like when you LOADED the bait with lead (all three segments) and only then tested it in the tank, where it plummeted like a stone. You had to drill out most of the lead you had carefully poured into it! In the end, however, I think this lure turned out to be one of the best-running swimbaits you have ever produced. It's action in the water is nothing short of EXTRAORDINARY.
@labtrainer093 жыл бұрын
P.S. Here's a follow-up question: When you make a jointed swimbait, does it matter which way the segment notches face (forward or backward)? I would think that the water flow during a retrieve would be slightly different, but I don't know whether it would be enough to change the action of the swimbait noticeably. Your thoughts?

Just a tip, if you put a piece of leather between the jaws of your vice and your lure blank you can squeeze your lure tighter and it won’t move around on you, place no marks from the vice. Great job! I absolutely love these! What type of wood are you using for your lures, pine?

You should send a swim bait to tactical bassin, let them fish it and review it. That would be rad I'm sure they would catch some good bass with one. Great work man you inspire me!

Way, way, way back in the day I used to make very nice boomerangs for beer money. I started shaping the wings much like you shape your baits and then sanded the contours the same way. Then I found a pneumatic drum sander head that fit on my drill press. That cut the hand sanding down to 1/4 the time. Totally worth the investment. Next thing I knew Bob was my Auntie and I had more time for drinking. Stay unique my friend.

Awesome bait, great erratic action. Few questions... 1. Why do you prefer the disk sander over the belt sander? I use my belt sander where you often opt for the disk. personally i find due to the diameter of the sander, it will sand unevenly. 2. Why do you chisel the contour of the body instead of sanding? 3. Can I buy the long strips of sand paper you use or are they just cut from sheets? 4. What wood did you use? Why? 5. I know you made a bunch of these, was the action consistent? 6. You had the lure almost done before you added lead. I usually do it after sealing it. Why wait so long? I'd worry about messing up the paint and epoxy. 7. Will there be a video on the gliding model? Sorry for all that, just want some tips on mastering wooden swimbaits. I've had minimal success but your process is quite similar to mine so I thought I'd pick your brain a little.
@marlingbaits7 жыл бұрын
Nolan Aker Thank you! I always do better with the disc sander, much more comfortable with it. The chamfers on the corners of this baits blank tilt and twist, and I can carve them best with a chisel. I cut my sand paper onto strips from a belt. I use Poplar, if you take carve-ability, buoyancy, and durability into account I prefer Poplar. Always have to test and tweak a little for consistent actions. I wait to add lead just before the last clear coat, can get more consistent rate of falls that way. And yeah I'll have a "Making a Glider" video uploaded eventually.

How did you know that putting weight there would work? I allways hot glue my weights to the bait and see what would work. Also, u tune each piece individualy, then tune it again when all together. I feel like it makes the bait more balanced when you tune each piece balances.
@marlingbaits7 жыл бұрын
Ben Zerzanek Made a lot of these, so I have how much weight should go where written down. I over shoot how much lead I need, and start to drill out lead from certain holes. I prefer to have the tail piece just barley float too.. seems like it's more ready to kick that way
