This video was uploaded earlier today, but due to an editing mistake (that maybe no one but myself noticed) the video is now reuploaded. If you watched the video before, I apologize and I thank you for your patronage. If not, ignore everything I just said, grab the popcorn and follow along on how to make a transparent speaker!
Transparent speakers, how do they work! Is it sorcery? Is it magic? Is it just putting transparent sheet material together into a nicely looking box and shoving speaker electronics inside? Will we ever know? Watch this video to find out!

Love the switch logo in the speaker ports! Thanks for another great sound/music build from acrylic. Enjoy working with acrylic. Now to find someone with a laser cutter...still doing by hand (scribe), scroll, fret, or saber saw + cleanup....all fun!

While a little bit more expensive you can always order your pieces from Ponoko as well. I'm sure there are other similar services too. Cheers!

That little speaker looks top notch, and this is an excellent how-to for people who want to 1) produce their own work and 2) do a custom work (don't think we didn't notice those S&L logos protecting your speaker cones).

I love the clear acrylic look! Whereas most electronics hide everything away, it has all the internals on display :) Even clearer than the crowdfunded speaker as that has a frame where the panels sit inside, which I guess is because the speaker drivers are heavier. I remember using that laser cutter at school! (Although unfortunately we didn't get to build speakers)

That looks great! One thing I would have done differently is braided all the internal wiring - but that's just because it would match my computer internals :) Very good!

I twisted made twisted pairs out of the speaker cabling, but that was about it. I kind of liked the rainbow ribbon cable though, gave a little splash of color to the internals :)

The speaker look pretty rad! Is it necessary to temper the laser cut PMMA before using the Acrifix 117? I've used DCM and Acrifix 192 to bond PMMA together but only got satisfying results when tempering the pieces beforehand due to the thermal stress from the laser?
@SwitchAndLever
@SwitchAndLever 6 жыл бұрын
It depends on what kind of acrylic you use. If you use extruded acrylic (which is more flexible) it will melt the material away when lasering whereas if you use cast acrylic (significantly stiffer, and more expensive) it will turn the cut mostly into dust and smoke. There are really no thermal stresses on the material. I haven't ever gotten any crazing using cast acrylic from a laser, though extruded acrylic can be problematic and may need tempering.

Cool. I just wish there was some better cable management, maybe stick them to the sides in a nice straight way so that they would add to the look?
@SwitchAndLever

I kind of like the mishmash of wires though, the only thing I'd want to change is nicer cables. Maybe even fabric covered ones. I did twist the speaker cables so they would be less wiry in the enclosure at least.

Cool build man. I'm going to give this a shot. I have some Dell (external) speaker/sub sets and some Logitec sets that would look much nicer in clear acrylic.

this is actually really cool, and seeing as how you just need a bit of glue would make for a fun DIY kit.
@SwitchAndLever
@SwitchAndLever 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but if you want to make it nice the glue is still a little bit specialized, and not something you're likely to be able to pick up on your local hardware store (unless you live somewhere with a huge selection).
@mickleman52

quick amazon search, seems like there are options. Though I have never tried to adhere acrylic to itself, so potentially it is not a good source. Though it comes with the application bottle Diresta uses.
@SwitchAndLever
@SwitchAndLever 6 жыл бұрын
You really want to use a solvent based glue, and not a glue like super glue (cyanoacrylate), epoxy or contact adhesive that basically sits in between the pieces. If you dissolve and allow the acrylic to resolidify you end up with a much stronger joint than other methods, and it becomes virtually invisible as well. If you can get hold of chloroform it's just about the best you can use, but you need proper ventilation as it is slightly carcinogenic. The Acrifix is basically just a solvent mixture (no chloroform though) and I'm sure there are other blends on the market.

If I were you I would try to spend more money on a separate Bluetooth amp and speakers some suggestions (yeeko, drok, fosi audio) and give it a passive radiator or port (which increases bass) because it deosnt cost much money 5-20$ amp 3_20$ speakers 1$ passive radiator or transparent pen tube port

Nope. I’m not really interested in building the best speaker possible. I just want it to be fun, the quality of the sound is by far secondary.
