I think my favorite part of having the microscope view is that it's the first proper "Alec's-eye view" of the work before. The microscope camera shows us exactly what Alec is seeing while he's working, which feels like a unique perspective compared to the other cameras.

Hmmm cures for boredom. Ahh yes here we go. 1.Raise toilet seat. Place head or other round portions of the body under seat. Plop buttocks on top of seat smartly. 2. Place extension cord In wall outlet. Fill mouth with a couple of milligrams water. Place other end of extension cord in mouth. Try not to let water spill out. 3. Open door a few millimeters. Place fingers in door facing. Close door briskly. Repeat and count how many times it take b4 tears roll. 4. And perhaps the most exhilarating. Have a friend drive you to the zoo. Place roller skates on securely. Roller skate into Hurd of water buffaloes while shouting " Get along little doggies, your momma can run faster that that! " NO NO NO. ALL OF THOSE THINGS WILL LEAVE A MARK AND COULD BE HAZZARD FOR YOU AND THE ENVIRONMENT. DO NOT DO THESE THINGS! Now watching Alec Steele may possibly not seem so boring...or...? Lol hope you smiled a little inside, or called me names or something. Lol😁😁😁

Alec, using 'Damascus' techniques I'd like to see you forge a aluminum bronze, and tin bronze twisted billet (so to be clear, alternating layers of Aluminum Bronze and Tin Bronze forge welded together, then twisted). Interestingly, this would be neither Makume Gane, Sheffield Plating, or Damascus - but something uniquely its own. As techniques are often named after their place of origin, you could call the process 'Norfolk's Bronze.' Using the twisted billet, I challenge you to forge a 'Carp's Tongue Sword.' These are ancient bronze blades and deserve a renovating rebirth! Attempt #19

Alec! Once you're done with this project, I'd be very interested to see if you experiment with different steels out of your comfort zone (Such as CPM steels [CPM 3v, CPM4v, CPM10v, CPM154] or maybe A2 and D2 tool steels?) Just an idea, but I am loving this sword so far!!! Great Work Alec!
@NoctN76 жыл бұрын
That's why it's called an experiment, as he says himself, he can't learn new things if he doesn't try them. And yes he wouldn't get the damascus pattern, however he could get a wood grain pattern called a 'hata' by folding the monosteel many many times, sort of similar to the process with tamahagane, which is the steel made and used in very oriental katanas, mainly used as art, rather than weapons of war. (Edit) Also, heat treatments of such steels is no biggy, exactly the same process, just slightly different temperatures, which once again, would just be an experiment :P
@NoctN76 жыл бұрын
Actually the only steel that needs a cryogenic heat treatment (With dry ice or liquid nitrogen) is CPM 10v, all of the other steels don't need a cryogenic treatment, mainly because the martensite forms as normal, and yes to get heat treatments optimal, an electronically controlled kiln would be much better for holding the temperature, and evenly at that. Now of course cryogenic treatment is recommended for all of the CPM steels, it's only required for the CPM 10v. Also, A2 and D2 steels, or something like S30V even, don't need cryogenic treatment at all, they act extremely similar to regular carbon steels, or as he uses sometimes, O1 tool steel. And then at the bottom of the line, we have steels like 8cr13mov and 9cr13mov which are low quality steels, but require no cryogenic treament. Another thing is the forge welding process for a stainless steel or damascus as a shell isn't actually as difficult as it may seem. Simply put, laminated steel, or what's sometimes called the taco method. Definitely different to and forge welding processes he does, but nothing crazy.
@auroraborealisknives40196 жыл бұрын
Nocturnally most of the steels you talk about can’t or should not be forged. Forging cpm steels defeats the whole idea of the cpm process

I usually wait until a project is finished and then binge watch the whole thing.... but when I saw what was being done I realized I couldn't wait... and now the first thing I do when I wake up is see if the next video is up... keep up the good work hoss!

if you're worried about scratching the steel while removing the excess gold, you could make a bronze chisel with a hammer and then sharpened edge due to it being harder than gold but softer than steel. the hammering for bronze makes it harder for those few watching that didn't know. also when retrieving the gold you can use a magnet for the steel bits and it will leave the gold due to it not being ferromagnetic which most magnets are.

I have found it utterly fascinating to watch the engraving and inlay process.

watching you learn engraving is so much fun, i bought replacement pickguards for my guitar that i'll engrave and 'inlay' with gold color. it'll be so blingy and cool!

Did anyone else jump when the scratch happen and the gold was dug out? I'm glad that it is repairable. Keep on working with this hard and you will have earned you a long vacation.. Oh and if you like coffee try chickory root!

I would love an episode where you go back over your other pieces with the microscope. I think the keyhole and feather demascus builds would looks amazing under the scope.
