I received a bunch of interest in this golden yellow 18th century inspired ensemble last year, so I knew I wanted to demonstrate how I created the pattern for that particular jacket top vest garment thing. It's sorta all three and also none of the above almost? So I made a new version in black moire to keep in my recently reorganized closet, as I'll soon be letting the gold ensemble go out into the wild!
I somehow forget to mention in the video that the A-line skirt pattern is created by simply closing the waist darts in the basic block skirt pattern (or pencil skirt pattern, as I use my skirt block to make pencil skirts, but I digress) but I have shown how this is done in other videos in the past. I will have a dedicated video showing two ways of creating an A-line skirt pattern and demonstrating how I'd sew one soon here on the channel too!
An excellent bound buttonhole tutorial, the method I use in this video is at the end of the post : www.lauramaedesigns.com/2012/0...

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

It is a truth universally acknowledged that the sample bound buttonhole is always more neat and precise than whatever nonsense occurs on the finished garment.

@@MiahGrace While it's possible to damage a machine while sewing over pins... I think you're more likely to put out an eye driving your car. Sewing machines are not tiny little machine guns just waiting to throw pins in your face. Usually if you hit a pin badly it'll just bend down into the bobbin cavity.

I’ve made arty garments with bound button holes and used a contrast fabric and brought the binding (where you used organza) out to the front and appliquéd down in a crazy shape... so I did your Franken-look on the front, on purpose! I kinda like the black bars; they look like a burglar mask from an old timey movie :) You can always claim they are on purpose: a brutalist deconstruction of altelier sewing!

Oh, I feel for you on those buttonholes. I did that once on the lining and had very little fabric to spare. I wasn't about to redo them after all that work. so I cut them off, flipped the lining around and added a piece to the lining to make it all fit. I decided I'd rather have a couple of seams in the lining then have it facing the wrong direction. Good on you for soldiering on though!

WOW! Now I understand why my bound button holes looked good but were always too tight. I didn't take into account the thickness of the button! I wasn't taught that in Home Ec.nor was it in any of the patterns or in my many sewing books! I like the organza idea also. So much less bulky than the method I was taught. The way you turned down the lining so it didn't match the edge of the fabric and edge stitched it for a very clean look amazed me. Why didn't I think of ANY of these things!?!? I was torn between pounding my head against a stout post or having a good cry. I decided to open a bottle of sparkling spumadi instead to celebrate new knowledge! Thank you VERY much for showing the good, the bad, and the ugly! Bless you!💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃💃 I can't make up my mind if these are high school majorettes or itty bitty Rockettes!

Yes! I mentioned to my husband Christmas Eve that I would like one - I showed him a picture of the simple version (the curved ends shaped block rather than the fancy 2 tier version) and he disappeared to the garage. An hour later I had my clapper! It makes such a difference in pressing seams - especially if the fabric has any synthetic (although like Bianca I'm avoiding it when possible).

Thanks Trudi! They are almost less stressful than thread buttonholes for me really, because I worry less they will one day loose structural integrity which is always my worry with thread buttonholes 😅

I’m quite glad that we have the metric system ( although oddly enough I usually employ inches). But what makes me happier is I’ve got that concertina tool ( no idea what it’s called) that expands and spaces out buttonholes, pleats, darts etc at whatever regularly -spaced distance my heart desires

@@sarahrosen4985 Hi Sarah thank you, my grandparents showed me how to make them when I was a kid, they came From the Bavarian side of Switzerland. I’d forgotten all about the trees until I noticed the price of them😲😯😲 and realised I knew how to make them. The hardest part was working out the measurements, mathematics is not my thing I prefer crafting. Sorry rambling away.... thanks for your comment. Stay safe & take care.

I've sewn one sleeve on the wrong side a few times and I've put the buttonholes on the wrong side of sleeve cuffs more than once. What can you say....Things happen. But, if I'm not mistaken, one of the methods of bound buttonholes do have the little rectangles on the inside. What's on the inside of our garments, stay that way, and it's nobody else's business.
@india1422

I hate to admit this but it was only about ten years ago that I realised sleeves had a back and front sleeve head. In my defence it wasn’t covered at school and this was before I really did much sewing. Wonder how many I’ll-fitting sleeves I made?

I love vintage clothing, I just don't find any where I am able to wear. These beautiful clothes don't do well wearing around the house, ya know? Love to see you construct and model. I've been re-watching Downton Abbey again and enjoying the clothing and getting ideas and i1nclude some of the features in making garments that I can wear. The black moire is a huge success, very lovely and the pleats in the back--perfect

That fabric is delicious! And I don't think I could count how many times I've done something similar, though the bane to my existence is set in sleeves. Doesn't matter what I do, I will invariably have to rip one or both out at least once.

I love this and the panniers skirt! It's so satisfying to see this finished. Cultivating patience for fine finishes is an aspiring goal for me too lol. I'm sorry about the mistake, but I'm so glad you were able to make it work! You are definitely still a good seamstress. Not the same thing but I once had trouble after doing a too thin opening on a welt pocket in jeans. (I fit it between the button and the flap of a fake pocket.) After some wash/wear, the corners unraveled quite a bit. In retrospect I wish I'd done some bartacks, because before that I'd been so proud lol. Alas!

Thank you Reina! I think it is very impressive that you have made jeans at all! I have never attempted such things as I often get frustrated when working with thicker fabrics ha 😅
@ReinaElizondo

@@TheClosetHistorian Thanks lol. I actually only modified existing jeans, but the loose weave and thickness were a little challenging when the layers added up. I used my dad's industrial machine for things like adding belt loops, but my regular machine worked for the quilting cotton I used for the welt pockets. (They were contrasting.) I got started in machine sewing by modifying existing clothes to fit better. Putting pockets in all of my jeans that didn't have them was one of my more extensive early projects. I find the idea of making a full pair of jeans intimidating too lol.
