The crispy m&m's are made with puff rice... puffed rice is full of air. Use the plain chocolate m&m's and you should be fine. Would love to see you remake this bowl with plain m&m's.

Idea: Make a blank of "Everlasting Gobstopper" jawbreakers set in resin... when turning, all of the rings of different colors would be pretty cool as they're revealed. Almost like a pencil bowl... out of candy! :-)

Kurts Customz great idea, i cracked one with a hammer once and the contrasting rings would look quite nice. Might have to just leave the sharpening belt running to run back and forth between sharpening and turning if using standard gouges.

Do you think that maybe the M&M's being crispys may have caused the bubbles? And maybe if you use solid M&M's, or Peanut M&M's that the finish would come out better. Just a thought due to the puffed rice having holes to start with. I say give it another go. Love your channel keep up the great work. Maybe you and Charlie could join forces this summer and come up with a father son project. Would be great to see.

Dan McPhail the problem with the peanut M&M idea is the nuts have a natural air pocket between the halves of the nut. The "plain" should work though.

I agree. I imagine the pressure pot causes the air in the crispies to be crushed out. Plain would probably work.

Kuffys Woodwork My grandfather used to build houses, and in every one of them he put hardwood floors! He would always place under 7 Layers of polyurethane, a 50 or $100 bill in very conspicuous places. Lol! He was a hoot! ;) There are 250 houses in Tennessee with those bills still on the floor!

Tracy Keaton what a cool way to sign his art form (House building) 😄 My grandfather was a House painter and always painted the same piece of wood with a layer of the paint he'd mixed. After years and years he could break the Wood of and cut big pieces of rock-like paint. Each of his grandchildren got a big piece of paint rock with hundreds and hundreds of paint layers in it. It's beautiful and heavy as Stone... I feel like there's a piece of his spirit in each layer of paint. In every color he mixed 😊❤️

I think if you don't use the pressure pot it would be fine. There probably isn't any reaction between the m&ms and the resin, just the pressure pot forcing the air out of them after the resin has set too much.

It's the crispy m&ms they have air in the crispy bits... putting it inside the pressure pot may have caused the problem it was so strong it pulled the air out causing them to sort of collapse/crack causing even more bubbles you will need to use solid chocolate not peanut or other to avoid the air .... even tho it's still an awesome bowl because of the wood

1.There is water in the candy. Water in resin equals bubbles. no matter what you do really. 2. if you trap anything organic in resin that still contains water it will fog, yellow, rot or all 3. 3.as resin cures it heats up. in some resin it can heat so quickly it will begin to boil and smoke.. The cracking you see is most likely the candy melting from the light heat during curing allowing water to escape causing a reaction in the resin forming bubbles.
@CrimsonCrowess
@CrimsonCrowess 5 жыл бұрын
it's the air in the candy, not water. there is water in lots of candies I've seen put in resin and they haven't caused air bubbles. he used crispy M&Ms, and they are made with crisped rice (like Rice Crispies). the pressure pot more than likely squeezed the air out, causing the bubbles.

Probably would have worked better without using the pressure pot which "forces" the release of the air inside the candies, & just went with using the flame repeatedly say about every 10-15 minutes until no more bubbles surface and the resin has begun to solidify (like you did before using the pot). It was still so beautiful, definitely NOT a failure. Also just an FYI...sometimes candies and the like will eventually cloud the resin over time, or their outer colors will begin to seep into the resin. For the candies to be 100% foolproof, one must seal them first with a sealant or a thin layer of resin before going into the main pool of resin. It is customary for anything porous like paper for example to need a sealant to make the two compatible. This also eliminates or at least greatly lessens the chance of bubbles from surfacing. Remember too, warm resin means less bubbles no matter the type or situation. Cold always causes problems! I have been working with resin for a very long time and sometimes it just has a mind of its own! At 50 years of age, I have had many successes & failures with resin, but there is nothing more lovely to me! I am a huge fan of your channel and I hope this helps some... your work is outstanding so just keep up the good work!

also if you feel they are causing the bubbles you may use a clear coat finger polish. i found one made by tail and mane that hardens them as well it is thicker but is nice. but again a clear coat and frozen once you have two coats you should have no problem that way it you use warm resin it should not melt

Thank You for posting! Most definitely not a fail! You reached and inspired this fellow artist (lifelong wood worker, 12+ year pen turner, just starting with resin, epoxy, and Alumilite casting as well as stabilizing) to journey into new media/techniques. I wonder, had you considered stabilising the M&Ms with "Cactus Juice", or did you eliminate that as the vacuum/negative pressure might tear them apart? Or perhaps encasing individually first (dip, coat, drain on medium/fine wire mesh) with resin and let them cure before arranging them on/in the bowl. Here on public TV in the 70s we had a nature painter, Bob Ross, still on in reruns, to whom "mistakes" or in today's vernacular "epic fails", were just happy little accidents. He starts each episode with a blank canvas and a basic idea. Many a time, he performed on screen, a "cabin-ectomy", where an unplanned mountain range or pine 🌲 forest would appear in its place. The bowl may not be what you expected or wanted, but it looks great - not many "version 1.0's" come out as well. Keep it up, I look forward to seeing what's next.

Hello Nick! The crispy M&M's have a lot of air pockets in the center. Kinda like a puffed rice cereal. A solid chocolate M&M would probably be the best bet for a project like this because there is no air in the center for the vaccume chamber to pull out. As for them decaying in the resin, I've been setting candies and sprinkles in resin for a few years and haven't had any issues since it's not exposed to air or moisture. As long as the sweets don't have a lot of moisture in them, they should preserve fine. Keep up the awesome videos. I thoroughly enjoy watching your work! 😁

not sure if someone has said this already, but the moisture in the candy pieces could have caused the bubbles during the setting process. The cracked candies are from the moisture being sucked out of the candy and the outer shell not being able to withstand that little bit of pressure.

Crispy M&M's have air in them. They're filled with puffed rice (rice crispies). You should use the plain chocolate ones.

Personally I love it bubbles & all. The sweets would not perish cos the air has been sucked out of them but the pressure pot. Try Licorice Allsorts next time but make sure to include Bertie Bassett.

I also wanted to say that if you pour a shorter layer, just enough to cover, let that set then fill the rest, don't pressure pot it, just pick it up and drop it from around five inches off the table. When you don't see bubbles any longer, you are golden. The melting of the chocolate due to the resins heat is what that didn't work.

Love the look. You used crispy M&Ms. There is air inside them. If you try using a solid M&M you shouldn't have that issue. ^_^

Panga panga is the wood that you were using and it is absolutely beautiful the wood that is I would have done it without the M&M's but it's still nice like to see you do a really nice bowl or a salad set with that panga panga wood that would be cool make a bowl for it that sits inside the wood without actually being attached that would be cool look forward to more projects please take care and God bless
