I always though the center of bowling balls were filled with concrete. But doing some research resulted in this: "In general, the inner core is made of powdered metal oxides such as calcium or iron oxide mixed with a resin and catalyst to harden the mixture. This is the heaviest part of the ball, and its shape-whether symmetric like a sphere or asymmetric like a lightbulb-influences how the ball rotates down the lane." *Oh and HUGE thanks for the newly added music/track list!*

@the marble racer How was your use of the word "read" meant to be read? Because your statement can be read two ways. Did you mean the word "read" to sound like it is used in this sentence: "He planned to read the book..." OR did you mean it to be read as "He read the book"

The outside cover is resin. The pink core is urethane. That grey bit inside is the weight block, and they are usually some type of denser ceramic. That’s what helps the ball hook. It’s centered on that white dot on the outside, so if you would have turned with that at the very bottom it would have been symmetrical inside. Cheaper balls like this have a smaller weight block, but if you would have had a more expensive one that ceramic could have been ultra hard and a weird shape. Cool project!

10:50 if you really want to give the inside a nice shine, finish hollowing it out and then give it a smooth, thin coating of resin and sand/buff the resin to a nice glossy shine... A resin coating will also keep the core from contaminating (or being stained by) whatever is stored in the pot.

Bowling balls are weighted differently depending on its final job. A "lane ball" or "house ball" will probably be used by less experienced people, so they will generally roll pretty straight. A pro's ball, though, may be weighted to have a major curve to it.

bowling Balls are made by blending various resins with urethane. Cores are made by adding a heavy substance such as bismuth graphite or barium either to resin, making a very dense type of plastic, or to a ceramic material. The dot on the bowling ball is the pin its how a bowler can get their desired control of the ball down the lanes into the pins

My word, that is a fantastically oversized finneal! I think the small resin chunk would have come out better - I find that resin like that tends to be a bit too brittle to carve out with carbide, much better to use the skew. The ball came out looking great - but I think you definitely need to work on getting things thinner! the last couple of things you've turned on this size have been well over an inch thick at the walls. You're a fantastically talented turner, and I'm sure you could get much finer work if you kept at it a bit more. also, you and I both know - gloves on the lathe?? Looking forward to seeing the next wacky thing you put your seal in. You always give me some really good inspiration. Keep up the good work!

Looks amazing. But your blowout bit, scared me back to high school wood shop. Making my grandma a tall wooden vase, everything going great until I went to hollow it out. Needless to say I hit a knot, didnt break apart at first, instead my finger rolled up ontop the guard then as the knot and tool connected a 2nd time, shattered the pieces and all but took off my finger. Ouch. ... All that said. I've very much enjoyed your channel,.so no cutting off your fingers . Keep up the waffling!

The grey stuff is the core of the bowling ball. It's what gives it the weight that it needs to be rolled properly. It looks like this was an asymmetrical cored ball. Oh, and the white spot on the ball is the mass bias indicator.

There are video's on how bowling balls are made... If you look up the make & model of the ball you will know how that ball was made... There's a TV show called "How It's Made" They did an episode on bowling balls...

The white is part of the weight. Bowling balls are made of three major parts. A weight, the body and a decorative shell. The shell is made of polycarbonate plastic or urethane resin. The weight is an irregular shape so drilling it (or mounting it in a lathe) different ways effects the balance. There is a way to know how the weight is positioned to allow you to make it neutrally balanced but i would have to ask my uncle, he drills bowling balls.

Etsy seems to have a selective search engine. Finally his shop came up in a list. Really weird I have looked at my spellings and for the last 4 searches spelt the name correctly... strange. Anyway finally found his etsy shop 😁

Please don't hate me, but I think this would make a great flower pot, especially for cat owners because it's pretty heavy compared to normal ones ^^' Also the colors would work well with some fresh green and similar colored blossoms :D

What a fantastic project! I think the pot turned out quite lovely, I love the colours. And I am really happy you didn't make a bowling pin handle for the pot top. This way anyone would be happy to have it in their home instead of it being niche. Thanks for the video, Nick. ♥

Why didn't you just leave the original bowling ball exterior ? You could have left the logo on it. All you did to the outside of the bowl was to shrink it a bit and lost the sheen that came with it. Otherwise, great bowl...ing....bowl.

any bowling ball has a unstable core inside that makes it possible to make trickshots, the white you seen inside after you had the lid of, was that core. it is more dense and heavyer then the rest
