Ubi often uses the open world only as a backdrop, not the core of the gameplay. They just make an environment and then throw in a bunch of interchangeable activities and tasks, they don't think about how that environment can work by itself. When Rockstar makes a world, they nail every detail, every street, shop and interactive building, they think about the geography and atmosphere of the place.

I've played bully at least 6 times now and it has become one of the greatest games ever. I think one of the best things about it is that you can somewhat relate to it, like yeah, I've had clique in my school, I've been a complete ass to some people, yeah I've gotten into trouble with the school for doing something really stupid, but that's what made the game so intriguing, the story was even better to, and with the way rockstar excectuted it, or the way that the entire city of bullworth feels alive thanks to the fact that rockstar made story characters (students, teachers, adult, etc.) Appear in the open world so often that you say "hey there goes (character) beating up (different character). All in all hands down my favorite rockstar game ever

You explained it best. Rockstar knows how to layout open worlds so that players feel the urge to explore every nook and cranny while most other games, the worlds just feel like avessel for players to get from point A to point B. Also the radio stations. The music, commercials, talk shows are all so insanely accurate that it really adds to that immersion that other games just cant ever fully get down

That's why I love GTA IV so much, Rockstar built a tangible world that felt alive and real, bill boards and and signs shone at night, pedestrians moved realistically and looked different from each other, the lighting was on point with it orange hues near the park, and greenish blue near the coast. You had a phone that you could use at anytime, you could enter buildings just by pushing the door with no load screens. At night, city lights reflected on the water. Yes the map is smaller than GTA SA but it feels bigger and denser than it's predecessors. There's just something about Liberty City, maybe it's the weather, or possibly the tall skyscrapers.

Not to shit on IV, V, and the ps2 era classics but I always felt like the Red Dead Redemption world was way more alive than the rest. I wouldn't say it's my favorite, but when you were just roaming around you ran into a lot of different situations like bandits baiting you with a lady and setting you up in the middle of a road, sheriffs chasing criminals, public hangings of criminals, people getting attacked by animals, and huge etcetera, that weren't even sidequests (don't get me started on the bounties, hunting legendary animals, pumas, bears...) and even though I loved GTA V, I felt disappointed that they reduced all these encounters to ''hey you! some dude robbed me! go chase him!'' that didn't even happen that often.

Thanks for making this video. I have always been a big fan of Rockstar's open-world games, and I have found great appreciation for how they nail their atmospheric settings using these intricate details you have mentioned. I also found that they often use the colour palettes, soundtracks, and city locations to reflect the protagonist's goals, characteristics, and lifestyles. They often try to give the player a perspective on how the character might feel about being in this environment. (For example, Niko's perspective of Liberty City seems dull, dangerous, and alien, but it also reflects this sense of hope and opportunity. Luis Lopez, on the other hand, seems to have a very different outlook on the same city; it looks much more vibrant, welcoming, and colourful.) It's great to see that there are other fans who also appreciate that there is more to these universes than just the average open-world trademarks.

For me, one of the best music choices from Rockstar is Electro Choc in GTA IV: TBoGT, because they paid Crookers (that they were pretty famous at the time) to literally do a DJ-set and putting it into the game pretending that they were playing in Gay Tony's disco. They could have paid a generic DJ to create a playlist (sorry not sorry François K from GTA:IV) but no, they wanted some professionals to do a realistic DJ set in a disco. That's what I call quality.

GTA IV created the best open world experience. Each “borough” has its own vibe, and the landmarks make it soooo easy to navigate but it really is a massive map when you think about it. Such an ill game

To Niko, let us play a fun activity such as a sport or game known as bowling, we shall roll a heavy circular item in to a particular amount of wooden pillars with a circular top, as the ball rolls towards the wooden pillars with circular tops who ever shall knock over the most amount shall get more points, if you knock over all the wooden pillars with circular tops, that we will refer to as, “pins” you shall score a, “strike” this shall score you the most points, if you fail to knock over all pins you will be allowed to throw the heavy circular item that we will refer to as a, “bowling balll” again To do this a machine resembling mini train tracks to bowling ball back to you, you may now throw again but it will not score as much as a, “strike”, so Niko shall we participate in, “bowling?”

Watching this after your rdr2 video and I must say, while you made alot of very good and true points about rdr2, you made your best argument here. Its just fun to exist in the world. And rdr2 does that to perfection. It has flaws but its the most beautiful landscape ever created for any game. Rain, fog, shadows, night and morning light. Its amazing. Man I really want a video where you just talk about the things you love about rdr2

The silver lining of the epic fail that is Cyberpunk 2077 is that it's given us a chance to really appreciate Rockstar's brilliance when it comes to world building. I will never take it for granted especially after getting caught in the CP hype train. Thank you for highlighting the immense amount of thought and work that goes into making a world feel immersive and seemless.

BEAUTIFUL love letter to Rockstar. You captured so many of my feelings about these games I couldn't yet put into words, even giving 3 more love and attention than most people credit it for. Dog bless you Jakey Edit 1: #justrockstarthings also, for giving GTA 4's The Journey the attention and love I want it to have, THANK YOU. DOUBLE DOG BLESS YOU. Edit 2: Hey again Jakey, I hope you can find time in your schedule to create full, satisfactory-to-your-high-standards, complete videos of everything you love about each of these specific six games, like you mentioned you wanted to someday.

Gotta mention the fact that Rockstar were so far ahead of everybody when they "started". just take a look at Body Harvest on Nintendo 64. That was Rockstar North's first open world and it was on the freaking N64. They meshed what they learned from that game with all the escapism that came from the GTA 1&2 games to develop a masterpiece. in the other hand, they have Independent studios for independent games unlike Ubisoft that usually have no less than 5 studios working on the same game at once, leading to a loss of consistency and lack of a common vision. In return, they fill their maps with a ton of cookie cutter sidequest to pad out playing time without being rewarding in any other way than a stupid OCD way (CDPR and R* are masters at this). Great gushing over Rockstar in this video, like I said before, I like your content more when it is something more closer and personal like this one is instead of the now-run-of-the-mill cynical reviewer many people are going for now.
niespeludo look at ocarina of time and them we talk, that games have an excellent use of 3d scenario and gameplay
