It very much depends on the context of the film. Something that's supposed to be realistic and historically accurate, then 100%, but most stories aren't about realism. 300, LOTR, and Northman to name a few aren't great because of how "cool" the combat is. They're good because of the emotions and messages portrayed. 300 is great as it resonates so well with the noble fire that is standing against and dying in combat without fear against an unbeatable foe, and it's inaccurate combat scenes actually ENHANCE these feelings rather than take away. Northman is great as it shows how pagan germanics REALLY were with no shame rather than christianizing/moralizing them like most media does as well as showing the tragic yet awesome story of a boy raised with nothing but hate and vengeance in his heart; he not only continued his royal bloodline with a women worthy of his seed, not only got his revenge, but also got the most honorable death a man could ask for and ascended. Changing the duel on the volcano to be a historically accurate duel would have completely killed the mood and taken away a huge chunk of emotion from the piece. All in all: Stories are SUPPOSED to exaggerate and ignore things in order to make it hit the intended message/emotion as hard as it can. If you want real history, then read a historian, instead of reading/watching a novel/film.

I think this is an amazing idea and while the sword nerds would probably love this style of choreography, i think this shows why the fights are more extra in movies, shows, etc. Awesome experiment though!

I think fights in movies are the way they are because its partly due to safety issues and the secondly most sword fights dont last long and the general public doesnt know that. Cause theater!
@enigmatic31942 жыл бұрын
But you see, a lot of hd choreographed swordfights in media can get a little too... Unreal. Like sure, it doesn't have to be perfect. But the sword nerds can see a lot of the holes where a character can just go for the kill since the other is doing some spinny spin spin. My choice would most certainly be a balance of both realistic and fantastical
@choronos2 жыл бұрын
There are a few Hollywood movies that have fights like this. Rob Roy comes to mind. The particular detail I like the most in Rob Roy is that it accurately depicts how tired the combatants get after swinging a huge chunk of metal around for a few minutes. I haven't personally seen it, but I've read that The Duelists also has very realistic sword fights (by Hollywood standards). The duel between Achilles and Hector in Troy is pretty decent. I've also been told that the sword fighting in the 70s Polish historical drama "The Deluge" (Potop) is just about as realistic as it gets.

I think in a real sword fight they fighters wouldn’t take as much risks because you don’t know how good at fighting your opponent is and in modern hema fencing you have protection and there’s a lot more aggression because your not gonna get hurt or “killed” if you mess up.
@catsultan9492 жыл бұрын
Their are accounts of extremely aggresive and suicidal fighters in duels. Some people dueled drunk so they wouldn't feel the pain. Not everyone you fight is gonna be a perfect fencer
@SellswordArts2 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a mixed bag. I think generally there was more caution with sword fighting. You would understand the risks, because sword fighting was a very real part of life back then. There will always be outliers, but generally I think what we see in tournaments with fully geared up people is probably a little bit more aggressive than it would have been back in the day. Not to say it wasn't aggressive and intense, but because the consequences were so dire if you messed up, it stands to reason people would exercise a bit more caution.

@@SellswordArts I think the end fight was both flashy and accurate at the same time and unlike the hema duel you slowed down the fight and waited with your guard ready I think y’all did a really good job. finally small cuts not incapacatating, tbh we need to come up with some rules for hema where small cuts arent fight finishers because its so dumb when they snap cut your wrist, you cut off their arm or split their head in two and its still considered double or god have merce win to first by tempo

I think realistic sword duels hold more suspense than flashy cuts and performances. Whilst the ladder is cool, from a story telling perspective it's always nice to give a fight plenty of suspense.

Good choreography tells a story in itself. While it should look realistic, the main focus aside from safety, is to advance the overall plot. Real fights are often too short to accomplish this, as first one to make a major mistake loses.

@peterwang56602 жыл бұрын
I've always wanted to do this with hand to hand or with sticks, so the fight can realistically last longer, or at least, I don't have to reset in the sparring phase every single time someone gets hit. You need the skill level of the actors to match the choreography though...

I would like to point out that from the fencing manuals we know that historically most fencer did not train in protective gear. However, people didnt like dying or getting hurt in the middle ages much more than they do today, so they had to find other ways to make training safe. As a result, i am fairly sure that historic Longsword fights would have looked different from the ones we see in modern HEMA tournaments, because many of the techniques we see being used there are fairly dangerous even deadly and often both contestant hit each other (i wonder if the fighting would change if a double hit would lead to both fighters being dropped from the tournament). If you look for example at those guys - they train without gear and the whole fighting style has to change accordingly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5XNh2CdfquhsNk

This would be fine for a movie, but in live performance this is really dangerous at speed. I think only 2 people in my lightsaber groups are even allowed to thrust above the shoulder (I'm one of them) and I aim to the left of my partner's left shoulder so it's not near the eyes. I've seen someone take a blade tip to the eye (a scratch, no lasting damage) due to her and her husband getting too comfortable with their heavily practiced fight. I'm certain you're MUCH better with a sword than I am, but there's a reason choreography is designed the way it is. Had me wincing, bruh.

Are armored sworfights just as quick or does the need to attack weakpoints in the armor make the encounter longer?
@wanderingshade83832 жыл бұрын
It makes it longer. Generally the tactic with armored combat is to tackle or grapple your opponent and then use a dagger to get in the gaps. You could also use half-swording to a similar effect, but that requires two hands so it kinda doesn't let grappling happen.

So in most HEMA clubs points are scored when you land a cut or thrust that would have “Ended the Fight.” That doesn’t necessarily mean it would have killed the person that got hit, but it always means they would not have been able to continue properly fighting. It’s hard to swing a sword after all of your hand is a mangled mess or your muscles or tendons in your arm are cut in half, even if your arm is still attached otherwise
@3rdeye7thdimension Жыл бұрын
@@Kingdomkey123678 right, according to HEMA rules; they also address this with the double hits, as momentum carried from a strike wont just evaporate because the other person made contact first.
