Thanks for taking me along on your build! Nice to see someone do this solo (as my son would not agree to help if I ever…found property, decided to build, etc., etc. God bless your vision & drive! Enjoy those comfy nights & days for years to come!!

I like this method. I've been worrried about the strong tornados here and i think this with hurricane tie braces will keep my little cabin held down.

I have a “stupid” question and it may make me look like a total idiot! When you dug your foundation holes, filled them with cement, how do you align your Post base so that they will be square with the following ones. Sorry for such a rookie question
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 4 ай бұрын
No apologies! And there are no stupid questions. I carefully measured between bases, including the diagonals…which gave me the square. There was a bit of leeway along the length of the structure, as I could square that part perfectly during the beam install by sliding the beam back or forth through the brackets. Side to side was just measuring. I hope this makes sense! And I appreciate you watching and asking.🙏
@StaffAction
@StaffAction 4 ай бұрын
@@LifeontheMoose my same question. I’ll be squaring foundation and laying square concrete posts this weekend for a cabin. I’m a bit stumped on how to get them precise. My unique problem is that we’re laying directly on rock.10x24’. 28 posts total. Laying 4x4 PT beams across the 4x4 posts after that. Then the fun begins..
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose 4 ай бұрын
@@StaffAction Just measure the diagonals between every 4 posts to get square, then add on 2 more posts and repeat the process. It’s always easier on a keyboard!

I was checking out my property in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, walking around a bit. After only a few minutes, I came back the way I had come and saw a bear track I hadn't noticed before. It turns out I hadn't noticed it because the bear's footprints were laid on top of mine. It had to have come through very shortly after me, fortunately perpendicular to my route rather than following me. I never did see the bear.

Wait. What did I miss? What happened to the end piers? How did they end up so short? I'm not watching these videos in order so I suppose I need to find the first one.
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose Жыл бұрын
Hmmm. If I understand the question, those “piers” are buried brackets in concrete…vs the prefab piers in the middle. Thanks for watching!

Awesome videos. I am really enjoying them. As for frost heave, I wonder if the beam in the middle will go up and down more compared to the outer ones which are tied into the ground with the concrete. I am no builder and have no experience with this, but I just wondered what you think about this. Also, I always wonder if putting concrete 4' in the ground is overkill, but again, I don't have the experience to know either way.
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose Жыл бұрын
There is so very little moisture in the ground here, and none under the cabin, that I wouldn’t suspect ground heave to be a problem. And yeah, depth is probably overkill. Some holes were deeper than others and 4 ish was my max. I appreciate you watching!

Is there a special reason why you cut right angles at the bottom ends of your beams, instead of leaving them uncut?
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose Жыл бұрын
Oh you mean the angle? I cut those for both aesthetics and to reduce surface exposure to the weather.

I don't know how much your soil there frost heaves during the winter freeze/thaw cycles. It may be counter- productive to have that center beam floating on top of the ground. Be a shame after all the hard work of digging and pouring the other footings to have the center push the joists up erratically. Might just be better to leave it out or dig those pier blocks down below frost line?
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose Жыл бұрын
Very little soil movement here, because of the dryness. Especially under the cabin, where it literally gets no moisture. Great observation!

With that center beam not cemented in below the frost line. Is it possible the ground lifting and lower during winter/summer and pushing on the floor?
@LifeontheMoose
@LifeontheMoose Жыл бұрын
I really don’t think that will be an issue. It certainly freezes hard here, but with virtually no moisture in the ground…especially under the middle of the cabin. But I’ll monitor and adjust those piers if needed. Thank you for watching!
