A big part of the problem with the meteorite not mixing in is that it was cold. If you had preheated the materials you wanted to "infuse" the brass with, you would have had better luck with the mixing......the hot brass hitting the cold meteorite wouldn't have cooled as quick, and flowed farther through the shavings. Also, shavings will block flow-through MUCH more than small chunks of the same material. With resin and a vacuum/pressure chamber, shavings work great. For forge work, chunks that are preheated, to closer to the melted material temperature, you're going to get a better mix. The chunks you could easily preheat, while the shavings would be impractical to put in just before pouring the molten material.

Excellent advice, thanks for the helpful tips.
@Dsk0016 жыл бұрын
Would it have worked to throw the shavings into the crucible with the molten brass since titanium and I believe the meteorite would have a higher melting point.
@wingknutt11306 жыл бұрын
That kinda comes down to how messy it's going to be when you go to try and pour it into a mold. The shavings (if they actually blend in with the molten brass, and not float on top, or sink to the bottom) will most likely cause your pour to be REALLY messy unless the shavings are really small, not long curlicues that cling together. With the longer shavings, I think you'd likely end up with a clump of shavings like a ball of steel wool coming out all at once.

I think if you cast chainmail into brass it would have some really cool effects! You could make a strip with very small rings, and roll it up, then pour brass over it (Pre-heating the chainmail so that it bonds and flows better with the molten brass) then turn it. If you're interested I could make some tiny chainmaille and send it your way!

Turned out nice. Hope you can do another video making the mold for the rings. I noticed some things during the process and thought how you both could possibly improve the mix quality of the meteorite and Titanium into the brass. Too, how you could get more with less materials as well as not having an excessive amount of waste after lathe. Mix the titanium and meteorite into the brass with a couple pinches of each right before removing it from the foundry. As soon as it is dropped in and a quick couple stirs. Take it out and pour it into the mold. The mold. Use two aluminum rods instead of the one. Use on larger than the other with another that is about half the size in the center. Doing this would give you a hollow cylinder and not using as much molten brass to make the mold. Makes the mold in the form you need it. Also reduces the amount of waste from the lathe process. Just a thought. Great video and awesome work.

I think putting a rod in the center of your mould, putting the shavings in, removing the center rod, and then pouring the brass would produce better results. I'm not a caster, but I think it should produce a better block. If you were to heat the shavings while they were in the mould, that would prevent them from cooling the casting metal as it is being poured, and maybe allow better flow. A stainless steel tube would probably be a better choice than aluminum if you were going to attempt this. There is a *HUGE* area for experimentation with this process, and I'm sure that the possibilities are endless.

Great job. If you guys experiment again maybe try mixing the meteor into the molten brass while it’s in the crucible then pour. If the crucible is kept in the heat to keep the brass molten you may be able to stir the shavings in a little more densely.

Dinosaur bones? how? where? like real bones from prehistoric lizards or is that the name or type of gem color like eggshell white? can I clone one?
