We have been homesteading for over 48 years. I grew up on a farm and raised by parents who dealt with the Great Depression and food rationing during ww2. They were determined that we 5 kids would be as self sufficient as possible never relying upon buying. I learned by doing chores, bottle feeding calves, milking cows, goats, making butter, cultured buttermilk, sour cream, cream cheese, yogurt, all types of soft and hard cheeses, brining and waxing to age, planting gardens, pressure canning, fermenting, dehydrating before electric dehydrators were made, in fact I have one of the first Excalibur 10 tray dehydrators that came out in the 1970’s!! I also learned how to raise all livestock, butcher it and preserve by canning, freezing smoking, salt and sugar curing, making and baking everything from scratch, all types of bread including sourdough and how to make yeast when you can’t buy it, how to breed chickens for layer replacements and meat birds, how to render lard, tallow, raising my own dent corn for grinding into meal, etc, raising popcorn, peanuts and how to make fresh peanut butter, sewing, quilting, embroidery, tatting, knitting, crocheting, cut patterns to make clothes and other hoousehold goods, how to make brooms, soap from lard and ashes made into lye, to know what plants, bushes, flowers, herbs etc that are edible and or could be used to making medicinal tinctures, teas, salves, poultices, for example blood staunch will help stop bleeding when you chew it and apply to a cut. How to hunt, fish, trap, to tan hides, to make moccasins and other needed items from leather. You are getting a good start. I’m always happy to see people who are willing to try out our old ways of life. Once you gain the knowledge and skills and teach the generations to follow it gives you a great inner peace of knowing that they can survive. You’ll also find by living this way you start having more money in your pockets not wasted from buying pre made stuff and the taste is great as well as health benefits because you know exactly what’s in the food. I’m very happy for you and your family. May God bless you and your family on your homesteading journey. It may get hard but don’t give up.

We just recently started homesteading. First, we got our chickens and ducks, then started making more and more foods from scratch. We also make seasonings (like taco seasoning) ourself and just started a large garden! We are in Texas so planting has started already! Next we want to get goats and a Jersey cow. I just bought vanilla beans so we are also going to be making our own vanilla. I would love to learn to can!! You are actually the one who inspired me to start cooking from scratch so THANK YOU!

You can use the whey from cheese or yogurt to replace the liquid in bread recipes and it gives a lovely tang to it. Also, a tip for rendering animal fat: have it almost frozen, grind it and start it in the pot with half a cup of water. The water will prevent it from burning and it will evaporate eventually. Grinding renders so much more fat!

I honestly think raw milk is best way to go if u can get it. Yrs ago I got cellulitis very badly in my whole right arm, my hand swelled so bad it looked like a rubber glove whn u blow it up. It put me in hospital for 11 days on iv antibiotics which didn't help at all. Whn I got home my dad gave me a book written by a Christian man who was a surgeon turned naturopath that claimed to heal many people with all kinds of health problems with a specific food regime. So I did 10 days of raw milk and only ate apples and my arm cleared up gd as new.

I live in Alaska and my family hunts for our meats for the winter. We freeze the meat, some of the leg meats we dry to make dry meat or some would say jerky. The bear fat, we simmer down to liquid then freeze it and use as a cooking oil or dip for our dry meat. I bake breads and freeze them. Haven’t perfected rolls to freeze so I bake as needed.

Oooh, yes, it’s so satisfying doing these homesteading tasks. I’ve tried lots of them (not canning though, it doesn’t seem to be such a thing over here in the UK?). I’d love to do these things more, especially food production, but time…. I do make our own soaps (and sell it - it’s tested etc., so all above board!) and some skincare. It makes a massive difference to skin sensitivities.

I've made my own pasta, ricotta and yogurt. It really is easy. What I really like to make is homemade jams/jellies. My grandsons are pb&j fans. I wanted to come up with a lower sugar jelly for them. I always make the freezer variety which isn't pressure canned but stored in the freezer until you're ready to use it. I make it with low/no sugar pectin and it's much healthier and tastier than the store bought. I also have made Castille liquid soap, bar soap and make body butters on a regular basis. I would encourage anyone to who has a desire to learn how to diy to try it. It's so satisfying. Next I'll try mozzarella.

(Which I always thought to be true) She explained that there is very little pollen in honey and what is there is mostly flowers and not things that cause our allergies. Example ragweed, bees arent really using those weeds to make honey. I thought this was interesting and informative.

So far, vanilla, granola, marinara, chicken stock, and beef tallow. Today I’m adding chewy granola bars and (hopefully) beef broth!

I made and decorated candles for years, not the bee wax ones though. When I was living ob the farm, I also made a lot of jams, cottage cheese, pasta sauces etc, Homemade pizza is a favorite for my kids for their birthdays.

This has been really neat to watch! Thank you! Unsure if you read our comments, but I have some videos on my channel, on how to make your own corn tortillas & also your own salsa! As you talked about all the additives, it's something I'm concerned about too. Thanks for the video! 🤗

Save your whey for ferment starter, you can also freeze it. I add 1/4 cup to a pint of cranberry or grape juice and let it get really fuzzy for a probiotic pop. Works with 100% juice from the grocery store too.
