@ricksworks You may furnish a moderate head cupping to this "Lucky13" versions as well , would cause a louder pop(though not as a loud as a "real" topwater popper) , but the lure would not dive as deep this way . These lures even seem to call fish to come by from the closer vicinity to investigate , happened more than once that I was working them thoroughly casting from one spot and pike would still strike it at places , that the lure had already passed a few times before .

Thanks a lot , .......used some fine mesh textile fabrics fixed into a larger embroidery hoop , which I clamped in a vise , held the lure by the tail screw eye with pliers pressing it against the fabrics from behind and gave it two or three quick passes with a paint spraycan , released the lure with a rapid movement from the net after two seconds . Repeated on the other side , ...finally sprayed the back in solid color on . Off course base colour applied and dried before . Cheers , 61diemai

@LIFalcons99 Thanks , Rich , ........made these pics years ago for some pictured stories in the local angling press , thus I had to keep it quite simple , as not everybody is fully geared up with tools . I would turn down the plugs on a lathe and furnish the head cupping on my routing machine , had to show more simpler methods to the wide public though . One can even carve the tail taper with a carpet knife(and sandpaper , naturally) , if going through a planful working process .

@ricksworks Just had a look at yours , very nicely made for sure . These lures in my vid don't stay on the surface like a pure popper , since the lower lip portion is somehat longer than the top lip , they dive down 1 to 2 feet , .....when floating up , jerk them to dive and reel in for about 10 feet , ...then lure let rise back to the surface and repeat this manner thru entire retrieve .They'd pop moderately and pull a bubble trace when going down , .....deadly on local pike !

@THESNAF2 Thanks , mate , ...make sure your timber rods are buoyant enough for the purpose . That song is titled "The Fishermans Song" , performed by "The Bedlam Boys" ,... another version around by a band named "Silly Wizard" , obviously a British or Irish folk tune . Type in the title into the KZbin search bar and you'd find them listed . I've extracted the soundtrack from the video with a certain PC program to save it into my own personal data files . Cheers , Dieter

The song's name is "The Fisherman's Song" , .........at least two versions available here at KZbin , performed by "The Bedlam Boys"(the one in this video) and "Silly Wizzard" , ......utilize the search function and you'll access the particular vids . When making these lures , make sure to use sufficiently buoyant timber(but still somewhat heavier than balsa) , in the last sequence you can see , how deep they should hang in the water for best performance . Good Luck , 61diemai

+Nick Lankford Thanks a lot, ....to be honest, I'm too lazy to pick the challenge of learning airbrushing from zero ! As a boy I've been making plastic models also painting them by hand brush , ...so I just stuck to it , .......and also I do not mind about added working efforts , ....last not least there would be the cost of switching all of my painting gear , ...guess , I could not prevail during possible negociations with the missus , LOL !Since I'm not making lures for sale , but for my own pleasure and recreation , I do not neccessarely have to produce top notch looking work , .........I do not believe , that fish would be deceived by a perfect , top realistic paintjob alone , anyway , ...such is to catch anglers only ,.......after my experiences the fish could differ between a photorealistic artificial bait and a real life minnow very well , at least in our heavily pressured local Waters , ....and if they'd be in a picky mood, they just won't bite even the most realistic looking lure , .....period .I consider swimming action and other lure properties(f.e. casting performance , diving depth , durability , etc.)to be much more important compared to top notch and detailed airbrush paint work , ....though I truly admire the beautiful paintwork of other fellow luremakers .Thanks for commenting , ...greetings , Dieter

Good luck with it , they really are great lure and fun to fish . Make sure to pick the right timber material , not too buoyant but not too heavy , too ! The last picture of the clip provides a clue , at which level the lure should float at rest , .....the lure performs best this way . Any added belly ballast would be most likely counterproductive on such lures sporting integrated diving planes , it significantly dampens the wiggle . Here is a video about how to work such lures , this particular lure model (Lucky 13)is the second one in the clip : kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=aZS6Mz0Vx18 And here is another luremodel (Bottlehead Plug) , that is worked in the same manner like this "Lucky 13" and performs quite similar , only wiggles a tad more pronounced due to the more tapered body : kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=HxoUzqvKcKU Good luck with your luremaking ventures , thanks for chiming in , ......"tight lines" from northern Germany

@joemetheny81359 жыл бұрын
Been thinking about trying my hand at this for awhile now. Got a few ideas on how to change the balance of the lure to get the best action I'd like to try. On commercial lures Ill change the hooks. What song is that? Obviously its Irish.... (edit. The Fisherman's Song" ~ The Bedlam Boys caught it in the comments)
@61diemai9 жыл бұрын
Joe Metheny I've found , that adding lead ballast to such vintage style plugs sporting an integrated diving vane at the head portion most likely does not do any good , .......it surely decreases buoyancy , thus lets the plug run a tad deeper , but same time it works like the keel of a sailing boat hindering the plug to roll and swing , significantly decreasing a most lively simming action this way .These integrated diving vanes simply can't generate as much leverage around the tow eye like added diving bills of metal or plastic mounted somewhere underneath the chin of a plug , so they are unable to create sufficient force to move a belly weight as much as added diving lips can .If ballast would be located right in the center of gravity , things would turn out different, but I haven't tried it before , ....with very few exceptions , I leave all of my plugs of this and similar kind unweighted ,....... I'd rather try to pick different kinds of timber to achieve the desired buoancy for different lure models .I have a few more plug videos on my channel(striper bass plug catches pike)and also a video about "skim-and-swim" retrieve patterns , this particular plug model mentioned there as well .Thanks a lot for chiming in , ...greetz , DieterPS : Do you switch the hook to thicker or thinner wired ones ?
@joemetheny81359 жыл бұрын
I use a 2.0 aft & a 3.0 treble hook forward. I've only tried it on Hula Poppers. And what it does is move the center of gravity forward allowing more control of the popping sound. Makes a big difference with the action & strikes. The size popper Im talking about is medium & comes with two 2.0 hooks. Of course modern Hula Poppers are plastic & the action of every one I've ever thrown was different. Even though they look the same. Some dont pop at all.

When is the best time to fish with it? In the spring, or the summer, or autumn, or winter? And at which temperature you catch the most? And has it to be sunny or wet and windy or whatever. Ps: I am dutch, and my English is really bad. But nice video.
@61diemai8 жыл бұрын
+Flip de Jong This lure model is based on the old proven "Heddon Lucky 13" , I am fishing it as from May 1st(end of local closing time) until mid-October , before pike migrate to deeper water . It is just one out of three so-called "skim-and-swim" lures , meaning that they have a surface action plus a diving action , .......please check out this video of mine , where I'm talking about the swimming action of such lures : kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4u2Z4CwZburZ5o Maybe in your shallow polders in the Netherlands they would work all year long , since pike can't go to deeper water there ? The weather does not seem to have any particular influence on the use of this lure , as long as the water is warm enough for pike to stay shallow, ......maybe only at certain times of day ? Only thing might be , that if the water is too choppy of strong winds, the lure might not draw enough attention , I would use "louder" topwater lures in such cases . Greetings from Hamburg/northern Germany , Dieter PS : Your English is very good , don't be too hard on yourself !
@flipdejong5898 жыл бұрын
Really thanks, I am sure I will make a lot of them!
@61diemai8 жыл бұрын
+Flip de Jong Good luck , ......make sure to use wood , that is buoyant enough to achieve swimming level like on last picture in the video . No extra ballast required(might most likely even spoil the lure action . You can obtain lure hardware at www.lureparts.nl Good luck , Dieter

You can see my drying rack in the background of some pictures , it is standing on the opposing side of my workbench , lures hanging on it at 4:31 and 5:31 . But if you're using slow curing topcoats , you'd need a lure rotator to avoid dripping . My epoxy topcoat is fast curing , sets after about 30-40 min , so I just flip lures over from head to tail a few times . Any more questions about luremaking ? Check out the "TackleUnderground" site ! with what wood you make the topwater lures
@61diemai10 жыл бұрын
The two larger ones are made from round dowels of European pinewood , ....but those turned out to be a bit too heavy in the end , laying somewhat too deep on the water's surface to be able to perfectly generate that typical pop and explosion of bubbles , .....they still wiggle along nicely , though , but the topwater action is not as good compared to a more buoyant lure . Please check out this video to figure out about the desired swimming action of this lure model , starting at 3:15 : Homemade "skim and swim" lures(review) The smaller ones I've made from a broomstick of some buoyant , tropical timber , over here these are available at local tool marts or hardware stores , sadly I do not know the type of wood . Abachewood is well suited , too , but requires to be turned on a lathe , since it comes in rectangular boards , not round dowels . If you want to make these lures as shown in the video , you need to look for round dowels(25-30mm dia.)of buoyant timber , buoyancy somewhere inbetween pinewood and balsa , .....heavier wood like beechwood , oak , meranti , even poplar , etc. is not suitable for such topwater lures . Sorry that I'm unable to provide better info , ......good luck , 61diemai

Do these work on bass
@61diemai11 жыл бұрын
No bass over here in Germany , but since these lures are knock-offs of the old American "Heddon Lucky13" being around since about 1920 , I'm absolutely certain , that they would attract bass , ......cast them out , let rest and jerk them to dive and retrieve for 5 to 10 feet , after let rise to surface again and repeat . I have a video on my channel explaining more about this lure model , look out for "Skim and Swim" lures . Thanks for your interest , tight lines , 61diemai

Not saying you didn't do a good job because u did but when u make a lure next time use wire through the plug because if u hook up a nice fish it can pull the scew eyes right out and leave the fish with the hook
@61diemai10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment , ...by the time of making these lures I have made a pull test to these homemade wire eyes shown , utilized fishing scales in attempt to pull out such an epoxied eyes with 1" shank length . At about 30 lbs pull the connecting cord snapped , the sudden release spoiled the scales , but the eye did not move the slightest bit , the glue also did not show no sign of coming lose . Also caught a 47" pike with a homemade crankbait sporting epoxied screw eyes , absolutely no problems occured ! A friend of a friend caught a 65" silure on one of my large homemade lures equipped with epoxied screw eyes , .....but the pinewood material cracked up , he could still boat the fish , though . I'm confident in these eyes for all local predatory fish like pike , zander(European walleye) , perch and trout , .......EXCEPT the biggest European predatory fish , the silure(catfish) , abundant in most of local waters , anyway , ......I'm just into making lures for this species right now , ...and , ....I'm going thru-wired , even with thicker gauge wire than usual . Thanks again for your interest , .......tight lines , 61diemai
