Making Coffee Outside - Hiking in Lofoten

It's not much that can beat making coffee outside, especially on a hike like this. I start off hiking in the evening and find myself a quiet spot to set up the tent. With the midnight sun it feels like the day never ends, and it’s tempting to stay up to catch the beautiful light from the sun. I go to bed at around 3 am and sleep in. When I wake up the sun is already high on the sky and the views are magnificent. I gather some more wood and make a fire using the hobo stove. As the wind was increasing I made a wind breaker for the stove to prevent a wildfire.
Making coffee outside:
The coffee I make is called steeped coffee. I grind the beans at home before I head out (burr grinder on a filter setting), and let them steep in water for four minutes (35 grams / 1.25 oz of coffee beans for 0.5 liters / 17 us fl oz of water). I then stir the coffee to let the grounds sink, and then let it sit another two minutes. I then pour the coffee into the wooden kuksa and enjoy the view.

A true hiker after my own heart. Awesome. I've camped in strong winds where the tent poles would bend and touch my nose. Though a wood stove is not for me.

Simply beautiful. I have been to southern and central Norway but never the north. You are in a truly magical place.

Thank you! Well, it seems like you've seen quite a lot already! I like to say that Lofoten is a miniature version of Norway, with ocean, islands, fjords, mountains and lakes all in a small area. If you plan on visiting northern norway you also have some interesting landscapes in the north east, with endless mountain plateaus.

Great video mate, really stunning landscape. I was so hopeful you might have done a night sky Timelapse from that location with your tent in the foreground, @5.23 would have been perfect!

As crazy as it might sound, I didn't know you could simply brew coffee without relying on a filter in some way. I will need to try it. Thanks again for bringing us along.

Yeah, I don't think it's common outside of the nordic countries, so it's not weird that you haven't heard about it. When I brew coffee at home I usually use a filter with a pour-over option like V60 or Chemex. I get a very clean cup of coffee, but with the steeped coffee it tastes more rich and has more oils in it. It's basically the same as french press, just without a filter to keep the sediments in check. The tricks to avoid sediments are to stir the surface after four minutes of steeping, and then to pour slowly. A filter grind setting and a kettle with a spout also helps. Perhaps I'll make a more detailed description later on. Best of luck!

It is very common in asia countries to brew coffee without any kind of filter. If you grind it very fine, the coffee will sink more easily..

@KristianPletten
@KristianPletten 3 жыл бұрын
Takk Erlend!
