Helloooooo!! This is going to be an ongoing money saving/meal inspo series! It is clear that food prices are rising so I am on a mission to reduce waste and our food bill! Brill idea Sophie for a series. I just defrosted my freezer the other day and had a good look at what is in there. I had lots of soups I made last summer when my allotment was in full production. It made it a very cheap week using some of those up for lunches and made some freezer space for some new bargains. I'm writing very detailed meal plans again and trying to stick to my list and bargains only.

Sophie, here's an idea I often make to use leftovers. Make a bechamel sauce and place in a tray bread slices, put your leftovers (vegetables, chicken or other protein whether meat, tofu, beans or fish) put a little bit of the bechamel covering them, then top with more bread slices and finish with the rest of the bechamel and some cheese slices or grated cheddar or parmesan. Put in the oven till golden and you have yourself croque madame !

I am from Yorkshire, bubble and squeak was either left over vegetables from Sunday lunch, including Yorkshire puddings or left over uncooked vegetables, which was first boiled until cooked and then fried to brown, the brown bits being the best of course and served with Brown sauce and bacon.

Please can this be a series! I loved this video and its inspired me to do the same as we hate food waste. We try to use our compost bin as much as possible. Also im from Wolverhampton and we call it bubble and squeak too, my dad used to put something heavy on top and flip it like a pancake so it would be crispy x

Definitely a series! Already filming PT 2! We have already spent a lot less over the last couple of weeks on food shopping because of this! Loooove the idea of putting something heavy on top as we love the crispy bits! Going to try that next time 😍👏🥰

I'm two months in to my fridge and freezer Challenge. The Christmas leftovers saw me almost all the way through January and now my fridge is the complete opposite to yours ... more space than food 🤣 I'm allowing myself only £10 per week for shopping, it really focuses me on what to buy to accompany the food I have left. Oh and I haven't had bubble and squeak for years and I'm from Lancashire. I need to remedy that 😁

Three variations on potato pie/bake. 1) Pan haggerty . A traitional Northumberland vegetarian dish of sliced potatoes, onions and cheese. You can also add some cabbage into it. Perfect on its own or ideal to accompany savoury meat dishes. 2) Mizer's pie. Layered sliced potatoes, onions and bacon with a ham stock.. Serve with fresh bread. Or us Geordies would have it with Stottie cake. 3) Boulanger potatoes- layered sliced spuds and onions with vegetarian stock- ideal to accompany a simple meat dish such as chops or lamb shoulder. Look forward to the future videos in this series. Great idea.

It's quite easy to keep buying food just because you want to make something even though you have food. I'm quite good and frugal and try to have a good use up and make do every few weeks. Also key is not buying more than you need. Cooking more than you need (portion control ie weight rice, pasta etc) and batch cook / freeze meals.
@caralea34422 жыл бұрын
This is brilliant and so relatable! It's been on my mind to do the same thing!❤ Our diets are pretty similar, I'm mostly vegetarian but eat chicken now and again. It's really good to see food ideas that I enjoy. I'm on a mission to shop less and eat what we have already. Only thing I need is fresh fruit and veg, as I feel better having it in my daily diet.

I am from the Bahamas and I know about Bubble and Squeak because my Mum and Sister use to watch The Two Fat Ladies and they made that recipe and I was fascinated 😁. Not wanting to cook eventhough there's food already in the house is the reason why most of us rather buy food. We think it's the easier option but it adds up. Once again you've come up with a brilliant budget based food series and I am so thankful, because you inspire to be better citizen of the planet. Thank you so very much for sharing love. I appreciate you dearly, take care and have a good evening 🤗💕.

Food has increased in price and that will only get worse as Ukraine is a MASSIVE producer of grains which the UK import. I have started do a big once a month shop at home bargains for snacks (kids) and household products. Then do my usual weekly shop at aldi. I always meal plan, always use up whats in the freezer. Cooking a bit extra and freezing a portion helps as once a month we have a 'freezer meal' and use up those odd saved portions. Sending love to all x

Sofie things have gone up horrendously over the last few months and are set to get much worse , With the gas and electric increasing astronomically and petrol/diesel tripling soon ???? We’ve gone onto planning our food menu for main meals once a week based on what I have left in my freezer and fridge. We then shop at Aldi/Lidl once a week then then next week Morrisons/Asda,as some items I just can’t get in Lidl/Aldi . This is really working for us with a quick milk /bread top up in the middle of the week . Sometimes I’ve managed to shop once a fortnight like this . Scary times but lovely to see your happy face again and hope your all doing fine xxxxx

Really enjoyed this video and I'm looking forward to more content like this. I've been meal planning from my fridge, freezer and cupboards for the last week. I started by listing everything we had in. This may seem like a lot of work but it's so much easier to meal plan this way especially if you have a lot in your cupboards. I've had to buy the odd essential, mainly fresh item. I managed to come up with 7 meals and as I've gone along I've crossed what we've used off the list. I am now looking forward to the challenge of seeing what else I can make when we get to the end of these 7 meals which is going to need a lot more creatively. Bubble and squeak is definitely going on the list xx

I don't think it's down to you eating differently Sophie, we have found that our food bills have risen by about 200% over a period of around 6 months and we have cut back on eating meat (which used to be the most expensive items in our food shop.) It seems that prices have risen exponentially since Brexit. I love this idea of yours, eating everything you already have before doing another shop! We always use anything that we have leftover. Tonight, coincidentally, we had chicken leftover from the weekend roast with a salad! I have most certainly heard of (and have had on a number of occasions) Bubble & Squeak and I am from the West Country (Devon). As always a great video. TFS and have a great week! 👍💖

Bravo it's so smart to use up what you have in the refrigerator. Here in America beef is up 30 to 40 percent, pork is up 20 to 25 percent, a pack of 2 1/2 lb if chicken legs only was 15.00, wings 22.00 for same amount. Apples 7.99 a bag for varieties that taste woody. Bacon 8.99 to 11.99 a pound. All pasta doubled in price. Canned fruit and veggies doubled. All items sold in boxes are smaller but will cost more for less ounces. A box of cereal cost 5.00 for Cheerios. Candy is double the price. I live in the midwest in America. We have cut out cleaning products and all impulse buys. Oh, we paid 11.99 for 2 lbs of grapes that tasted sour. I dont mean to be over dramatic. I believe that in America we only have 4 companies controlling the distribution of food. It is greed on their part. Now the price of gas is effecting grocery prices. We portion crackers to use in lieu of bread. I make sweet muffins and top with raw peeled fruit or frozen blueberries, raspberries or even strawberries and or walnuts. We let nothing go bad. You are an inspiration to motivate homemakers to be creative and use up what you have. I have pulled from the fridge to use leftovers within 2 days throw out on the 3rd day. If I know it wont be used especially cooked meat I freeze it with the date on it. Thank for reminding us to use what we have already purchased before buying more.

It's basically a food and household waste prevention app, "food waste heroes" collect surplus food from Big supermarkets and advertise on there for free as long ad you can collect...such as tesco, coop ect and normal households can post unwanted food and household items on there to prevent it going to landfill. I thought you may be interested 🙂

Great idea. We all waste too much food. Gotten lazy. Easier to go buy something instead of working on a “new” leftover
