I love how you tried something new and grew to have more understanding for an artform you usually don't work with. I think there is a lot of value in that and I do think a lot of people could benefit from giving something like this a try. A lot of people don't have respect for modern art because they don't really understand it. I, personally, feel that museums also don't have enough available to help people understand. I used to not get it either until I learned about it more. A lot of modern art isn't about the size of the canvas or the price of the paint or the hours it took to make but about the technique used to paint the work or the color study the work represents or what it tries to say about the cultural climate in which in was created. Those can be things that the avegare public doesn't understand. It's not always about the visual story told by characters on a canvas. And it's not always just modern art. The Mona Lisa isn't important just because of her smile. She as a subject doesn't really matter. One of the things that is special about the painting is that Davici used a special technique of soft washes of 'glazes' which he layered over eachother (sfumato). It creates a very delicate build up of colors without visible brushstrokes, blended perfectly. It's also why she has no eyebrows and eyelashes. She used to have them but they faded over time and because of this special technique, they cannot restore the Mona Lisa like they can with other paintings. GreatArtExplained has excellent video's on topics like this. Mark Rothko is, I think, an artist people often think about what they say they don't understant abstract art because his most famous paintings are large blocks of colors on a canvas. (Personally, I love collages of color because I love colors, I don't need to to be figures to enjoy them). What they don't always understand is how he planned the size of the paintings, how they would hang next to eachother, the multiple layers of washes of types of reds, turning the paintings on their side between layers. It leaves a larger impact when you see them in person. When you walk around them, the light shows shapes of red inside the red paint. They're not solid colors at all but deep layered gradients. You see driplines and feathered outlines created within the washes. It's dramatic and supposed to suck you in and overwhelm you. His paintings make people cry when they first see them. Not everyone is going to love it but there is more to it than 'just a blotch of color on a canvas'. Pricing for art can still be really silly tho. Often they're just buying the value of the name of a famous (often historical) artist so they can say they own one. I think your painting came out wonderfully!!
