They work out pretty economical if you can get a run going! I would add glue grooves to them to allow squeeze out unless they are decorative/being seen.

@@BradshawJoinery If you do start selling them then I will be interested in buying some and I think a lot of others will. I have just checked out that cutter, it isn't much more than a pack of large dominos.

Would quite like to try this on our spindle. We have 30mm bore and I need to buy a mech feed block soon anyway. Can you please advise where I get the cutters to get the 10mm bead? Thank you for a great video, very inspiring.

i think i got these ones from whitehill, but i would suggest having some made with the same edge profile as an actual domino if you are just using them for loose tenons as it allows the glue to escape easier. if you want a showing tenon doing them this way is great and a lovely feature. (i think there is a picture on my instagram of a spice rack with showing dominos. Cuter Profilers uk are a good place to have the cutters made ;)

Thanks thought I was missing something I've got a little accoya jib and was going to use ordinary dominos my way thinking was that they are deep in the timber encased in glue so they should be OK 🤷

After I'd bought my Domino XL I tried making my own domino stock, but without much success as they caused the jointed pieces to twist relative to one another. In the end I put it down to my dominos being made too "exact" a fit. I used a half round cutter on the edge, but thought that a sharp angle (as the "real" ones have) would be better. Looking at the comments here, I think that you may have come to the same conclusion. I may give it another go as dominos ARE expensive.
@BradshawJoinery

They do require accurate machining, I think a cutter with a relief on the edge as per original dominoes is best, as this woul allow a small degree of twist accomodation. I have managed to use solid dominos for decorative purposes though!

Hi, the machine is a Spindle moulder, this model is a Felder f700z, the cutter is from whitehill tools and is a 10mm bead profile

As near as damnit is to swearing! Thanks for the ideas! One question - the pressed / factory ones have glue grooves pressed in whereas the shop made ones are smooth. Any thoughts on this? Are those glue grooves a significant advantage, do you think?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 жыл бұрын
If you groove the edges of the stock before cutting to length with a tiny 0.5mm v groove/saw cut it will let the glue out easier. The pressed grooves will help tighten the joint as they expand with the moisture of the glue and lock the joint, but with Accoya this wouldn't happen as it doesn't expand. You could recreate the pressed pattern if you made a simple jug with a textured bearing either side and pushed the stock through. Maybe another video for that one

You must be left handed. That spindle moulder is running from left to right. ? Most run right to left....
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery 6 жыл бұрын
Colin Riley, well observed, I can run my spindle both forwards and backwards which means, in this case, I could have the cast ring in the spindle to support the timber (if the block was the other way around the block would need to be below the surface and I would need to remove the ring..

Yes I sometimes reverse my spindle on rare occasions. Usually for machining skirting boards. The cutter spindle wont reach high enough, so the skirting is turned upside down. I then turn the cutter block over and reverse the spindle. Hope that makes sense. !

I too was confused by this, I was looking for signs of the footage being reversed but it wasn't. Glad I wasn't the only one who spotted this, I thought I was going mad. 👍

Why would you even bother? Your time, material, electricity, tooling etc would cost so much more than a bag of dominos.

I think you would be surprised on the cost front! Aside from that Accoya joinery with inferior hardwood dominos isn't good. You can make O Any timber dominos not just sapele or beech
