Making Firewood With The Super Splitter...Oak Firewood??

I have logs trucked in by the Tri-axle. They hold about 5-6 cords once processed. To make my Japa 365 Pro work easier I try to trim off the butt-end of the logs if they are too big or misshaped. These off-cuts lay off to the side until I can split them with my Super Splitter. What a great machine!! If the log is not 16" long, or it it is ugly/misshaped etc I will put it in my own wood shed. All other logs are sorted by type and stacked accordingly. Some of these logs are oak and I will let you know in the video why I don't like dealing with oak firewood.

I've had a Super Split for 35 years. Converted it to an electric motor 8 years ago. I bought an Eastonmade 12-22 last year with a log lift to save my back. Both machines are fantastic and I use them both. I'll never part with either machine. Shalom, gw

I’m the goofy person that enjoys the smell of fresh oak. I think it goes back to helping my family gather wood for winter. It was their only source of heat. Now when my garage is loaded up with that smell it gives me security in knowing that I have a backup plan for heat. Great video Joe

I agree about oak smelling when splitting green, my favorite to smell while splitting is Cherry, you have a great day buddy.

YES!!!! Red Oak dried is OK (yeah - almost 2 years!) - but fresh, its so overpowering the smell - almost nauseating. I call it sweet-nasty.

Thanks Joe. With the Super Splitter, when you send the ram down it looks like it completes its journey down and back on its own, looks like you really have to be on your mark and keep hands away. I know this really speeds up production, but looks more dangerous than one you keep your hand on to complete the cycle. Stay safe! Love your videos.

There is certainly a risk given its speed but I think it looks more risky on the TV than it is operating it. As long as you have your hand on the side of the log you are safe.

Joe that's red oak it's the longest drying hardwood! Unlike white oak it smells sweet and only takes about 10 months to seasoned. Red oak stinks really bad!! White oak is really well for buying and you can cook with it. Good smoking wood. Do you have much white oak in Ohio??

I agree about the oak. I bought a face cord from a guy and he put a bunch of unseasoned oak in there. I would say about a quarter of it was unseasoned. I didn't know until I put on my birch and cherry and threw on a nice big oak chunk. Boom! The whole house smelled like puke and cleaner, just like you said. The oak was spitting and squirting water and juice like crazy. I still have the stains on my fireplace from it. Dude was mad I never bought from him again. I wasn't... Love your videos BTW. They remind of growing up in Canada.

I've been watching your videos for the past week or so and subscribed. I like your business model. When you are doing your splits of odd stuff like this video shows, do yourself a favor and buy a good pickeroon for lifting the rounds off of the ground onto the splitter without bending over. Your back will thank you for it when you get older. I have a couple. I epoxy a strong magnet onto the handle near the head. I just "stick" it onto the splitter somewhere in between picking up rounds. It also helps for reaching into a truck (or trailer in your case) when performing hand unloading. You don't seem to do many large rounds but I often get larger trees. The rounds are too heavy to pick up with the pickeroon so I use a pulp hook in one hand and my bare hand on the other end. That works well. Keep the videos coming. I have 40+ years of processing firewood and I still find things to learn from you.

Thanks Richard. I had thought of a pickaroon or a logox but have never purchased one. I try to avoid heavy lifting as much as I can and about a 15" round is about max for me. Still I'm not getting any older and avoiding injury, pulled muscles etc is a prime goal. Thanks for the complement. I appreciate your experience so that means a lot to me! Joe

I've no problem with oak. Red oak is almost explosive- it splits so readily by hand. I'm on a 4-5 yr cycle, so all the wood gets plenty of time to dry, up off the ground and top-covered. That gets the MC of all of it down in the low teens. Then stacked for a week or two next the woodstove, it's ready. Doing the above, I keep much of the splits on the thick side- enables long, clean burns. There's always the odd forked/knotty piece; noodling through just the cross-grained bit, a good maul will finish them off quickly. Handling pieces, I much prefer a hookaroon; Forester's heads have great shape. Splitting with Mueller 3kg maul is great exercise. Amazing tool, that.

@@ohiowoodburner I've had some mauls like that, big-box bludgeons. Then I got a 3 kg (6.6 lb) Mueller, and my eyes were opened, it was so much more productive. I then took a big angle-grinder to some of the bludgeons, to greatly reduce their "cheekiness" to emulate the Mueller's head-shape. Typical Scandinavian maul is a great tool, maybe suited for smaller rounds than the Austrian one. One remaining issue: metallurgy. The modified bludgeons are of much softer steel than Mueller uses. Highland Woodworking now sells 3 kg Mueller for $90, an excellent buy IMO. You can DAGS "Mueller 3kg Biber Classic Splitting Maul." Great exercise FWIW, and great therapy, if you can avoid rushing. I have a 2040 Multitek with a 16 way. What do you do to split with the super splitter? Chainsaw? How long does it take you to cut a cord? Restaurants are picky

That Multitek is a GREAT machine. I like watching them work on KZbin. I use my super splitter for resplitting when logs hit the 8 way wrong. Also for logs that that are too big to fit through my japa. I Buck them and split. I can have a cord split in about an hour and a half to two hours w the japa. It is fassst! Checked out the equipment you mentioned. It certainly is a solution, but clearly you need a crane and a machine to move the finished net clad bundle around, load the delivery vehicles etc. Maybe also something to unload still in the net bundle?

Hi James...This is a model J. I have never run an HD but all I can say is the J has all the power I need. I'm totally satisfied with it. I don't think spending the extra $$ for a bigger model would have any value. If a round is too big to split for my SS I would imagine it would be too big for me to pick up to begin with. When it comes to stacking multiple rows tight up against each other I’m a bit of a doubter. I was always taught that firewood needs good airflow to dry so a single row is best. Can you tell me your thoughts and what you’ve experienced?

Funny you bring this up now! i always use the width of my back-side hand when stacking against another cord. That width is usually enough gap to allow air flow. Last week I was getting into one of my rows and uncovered some mold on the current cord AND the one behind it. Big BUMMER.. Ugh.. I hate this. This is the 1st I have had it happen but I think this is bc the wood sat there longer than usual due to COVID killing my restaurant sales. regardless not all is lost. I pulled the moist stuff out and set it off to itself to see if it will dry up better. If not it will be moved to my own woodshed but still I lost about $800 in sales if not. Ugh again. Joe

Oak burns hotter and lasts longer then most other species if seasoned properly. I keep mostly oak for myself and sell off the other species of hardwood. When I do sell a load of oak I get a premium price.
