For anyone interested, here’s a rough draft of the recipe, I’ve tried this out a few times and it was delicious. I definitely recommend frying for longer than shown, I usually fry batches for about 8-10 minutes and it turns out looking exactly like this. My boyfriend and I eat this with jam and it’s also great to dip in soup. Pan filled with about an inch or two of oil on low heat 5 cups flour 4 tsp baking powder pinch of salt stir dry ingredients 1/4 cup lard mix again 2 eggs 1/4 cup sugar 2 cups milk (lukewarm) stir 1/4 cup water extra flour as needed to avoid tackiness knead together and spread out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into desired pieces to fry. Fry until golden brown.

Tell your mothers that she looks very much like my late Mom. I like you, are Metis my father was Irish and my mother was Ojibwa although I don't speak either Gailaege the [Irish language] or Ojibwa. My Grannie could make a meal out of just about anything, she used to make what she called "Dough -gads" which was made like bannock formed into a circle and turned inside out then fried in oil then rolled in icing sugar when it cooled as a treat for the grand kids. I'm proud of my heritage [the Irish suffered along with native people in years gone by] but it's funny that the fiddle playing brought both peoples together. Both people have persevered through it all and thrived. Tell your mom thanks for the memory. I'm 70 now and as far as making a bannock goes [ I'd probably starve to death next to a flour barrel] as my baking skills are poor to say the least but maybe I'll give a try. Thanks again ;-]

when I was a girl for a special dessert mom would give us rogers golden syrup mixed with either a bit of lard, or butter or if we were really getting fancy peanut butter, she called it Buffalo. it would be served with bread fingers or bannock. Mom was Metis. she said they grew up with this as a special dessert too

OMG. I’ve been watching videos on bannock making. My grandmother (also Cree) used to make it for us. None of us could make it like she did. I loved the fried version. She also used to try teaching us some of her language. We didn’t pay attention and I regret that now. I was reading the information in the sidebar and saw you are from Duncan. Such a coincidence; I live in Duncan too. Thanks for the video. Much appreciated.

That looks delicious! I haven't had bannock since I was a kid. One of my favorite foods was always Indian tacos made with fresh bannock. I probably haven't had in 20 years. I grew up in Southern Alberta right on the edgd of the Blood Indian reserve, and we had a lot of native kids at my school. Your mom reminds me of my kindergarten teacher because she has the same way of talking in her native accented English. It's super adorable :)

the recipe is the same as my grandma's fried fingers, she just makes them into long sticks like fingers and adds cinnamon and sugar on top to make it sweet. We have Cherokee in us, I wonder if that's where it started. My grandma is dead now so I can't ask here where it came from :(
