A few days ago, my wife, my son and I were lucky enough to get tickets for the premiere of the movie How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. We love the franchise and the movie was wonderful. It's the perfect ending for the trilogy. I highly recommend you to go and watch it.
As I was watching the movie, I started to wonder if I would be able to make Hiccup's helmet for my kid, and as soon as I got back home, I started working on this helmet. It took me a long time to figure out a design that would work from my memories and the few pictures I found online, but I think I got it pretty close to what you'll see in the movie.
I used 2.8mm/7oz vegetable tanned leather for all the parts of the helmet, except the little spikes on the side, for which I used 2.4mm/6oz veg. tan. leather. There are many ways to make a helmet out of leather. Personally, I chose to wet the leather and to shape it on a mannequin head which is almost the size of my kid's head.
The most difficult part was to carve the leather in order to make it look like dragons scales. It was a lot of work, but my kid loves it, so it was totally worth the time I spent on it.
I wrote an instructable explaining in details how I made this helmet, you can find it here (and if you like it, give it a like and a vote for the contest): www.instructab...
This helmet is a unique piece, only made for my son. I don't have a pattern as I was prototyping it as I built it. The helmet is too small for me a slightly too big for my kid, which is a good thing, he'll be able to play with it for a long time as he grows up.
If you have any question, leave them in the comments, I'll do my best to answer them all. Till next week, keep making and thanks for watching!

Absolutely stunning. The amount of time and effort and love that went into this is just fabulous. At each stage I couldn't believe there was another to go and each was impressive just on its own. The shaping! Those little spikes! The visor! Everything is just fantastic. Bravo!

As a kid I grew up reading the books and the movies. I instantly fell in love with both of them and the third movie meant so much to me. I cried so much during the end of the movie and it hurts to see the series go, but it's also amazing to see how many people's lives were changed with these movies. You did an amazing job on this, you definitely earned a sub. HTTYD will always be in my heart and hopefully yours. ❤️

I know right? except, for me, I didn't cry during the end bit. I felt the urge to cry when (SPOILER ALERT DO NOT SCROLL DOWN) they gave up the dragons, but I never did. somehow the fact that it's not all over, that generation after generation the Berkians will guard the entrance to the hidden world, where those great fantastical beasts wait for us to get along, soothes me. And I don't think that will be much longer. Current military options far outrank any dragon in speed, firepower, maximum altitude, etc. that they wouldn't be used for warfare. instead, they would be used to produce energy. A fossil fuel power plant works because the fuels are burned to create heat to get the water moving. imagine if you kept a herd of say, 30 Gronckles. imagine how much lava they could produce on one shot limit before being fed? that's 180 shots. think about how much heat that would create. that's a lot of energy. as for feeding them, every time I drive up to the ski area I frequent, I see piles of rock that mining companies have just dumped on the mountainside. gathering this rock, especially with flying dragons that can hover, would be child's play. and about Monstrous Nightmare Gel. according to the wiki, it's a very kerosene-like substance. it could replace some fossil fuels. tons of dragons could help with all kinds of things. Zippleback gas, propane. Deathsong amber, deep sea submarine windows. triple stryke venom, used to study what causes pain. dragon scales, firefighter armor. As shown in RoB, dragon feces makes stellar fertilizer. As shown in RTTE, we know of at least two different dragon species whose saliva has medicinal properties, the night fury and buffalord. Man I wish this series was real. it would solve global warming, essentially. it's awesome.

These sort of videos are the reason I love You Tube. You get to look into the world of skilled craftsmen and artists like this guy. To see how leather is sculpted, manipulated and sewn is something you would only ever see if you were a leather worker or apprentice. Even seeing the tools used to do specific jobs are fascinating to me. There is something almost hypnotic about watching a skilled artisan work. Great to have another channel to browse through.

Very impressive work. I would assume it took at least a week to fabricate that, not even accounting drying time. Just for fun : I would ask, would there be way to make the helmet fire-resistant. I know for example that fire fighter-helmets can withstand seriously high temperatures. In the movie crushed dragonscales were used, those obviously don't exist. Do You know what kind of material or impregnation-chemicals are used for those fire-fighter helmets ?
@RedSmithWorkshop
@RedSmithWorkshop 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Now we have a lot of different fire resistant materials, unfortunately, dragon scales are not one of them, but as you said, fire-figthers helmets are kind of fire proof and they were originally made out of leather. I'm pretty confident this helmet could do well under a dragon's breath (not for long though;) ) Thanks again for watching!

I'm still very much new with just a year and a half experience with leather. And in my short time I've found my progression to be slower than anticipated. A fair amount of what I make is gifts for my family and my gf and her kids. And sometimes I wonder if it's worth it to always make memorable gifts. Seeing vids like this lets me know I'm not the only sensible man who's efforts in life always lead into a labor of love. That's for your share in amazing craftsmanship and your share of family sensibility. It was a very beautiful video.
