I wasn't actively pursuing promotion but I went from E1 to SGT in 3 years and 4 months in an MOS (Military Police) that didn't promote quickly. What worked for me was just doing the best job I could, challenging myself, taking college classes and always being ready for schools. I caught a waiver to E4 and then my unit got a "use or lose" a slot for PLDC (BLC now?). The battalion CSM picked me over more senior E4s because I was ready to go and then I "Exceeded Course Standards". Be the "go-to" guy/gal in your unit. Know your job better than anyone else! You'll catch grief from your peers who have NO intention of staying in the Army let alone being leaders but it will be worth it. (BTW, that waiver and PLDC slot set the pace for me making the E8 list in under 16 years)

All you have to do is compete in soldier of the month boards and get a good PT score.....THAT'S ALL, you don't need to be a good leader, you don't need to be compatent in your MOS...... memorize the study manuals and have a good PT score..... you'll get promoted over a compatent soldier with leadership skills but has a lower PT score and doesn't do boards.......also extra points if you're a female.

Not sure why everyone wants to make E-5 sergeant so fast. Most E-5’s I worked with were just glorified privates that worked just as hard as the lower enlisted but was held responsible when things got messed up. In my opinion, you don’t really get to enjoy being an NCO when you get to E-7, maybe E-6 if you’re in a training environment (like being a drill sergeants or in TRADOC).

Well I am an exception, I made E5 in 8 months. I joined the Army the day I turned 18. I went to basic at Ft Bragg, I made E2upon gradationing, I was gung ho. Then I went to Ft Benning for radio repair school (31B20). I did so bad there I was in the lower 10% of the class. The top 10 % had a choice, higher echelon of radio repair or go to 31G40 (Tactical Communications Chief) school. The middle 80 % were sent to Nam as radio operator. The bottom 10% (me) was given the same choice as the top 10%. I took NCO Academy. When I arrived at Ft.Sill, I was made an E4 never having being an E3. On December the 12, 8 months after I join I was a SERGEANT in the U.S.Army. That was all I wanted to be from the time I was 5 years old. What can one do to top that?

Was the Army recruiting lying to me about going in as an E7? About mid 90s, I wanted to join the Army infantry as an officer. I was prior service (6 yrs, USMC, infantry) and had a bachelor degree (mechanical engineer). He said for the meantime while the Army was working on my paperwork to OCS, I can come in as an E7. Really? Was the recruiter pulling my leg?

The army is going off the ACFT and you need to run 2 miles in like 20 minutes which is laughable. Just continue working out and improving and you will be fine. I went from weighing 218 at the beginning of basic running an 18 minute two mile to 195 running a 14:50 two mile. Also don’t even try to get your friends to join the Army I never really liked how recruiters tried to do that. If your friends ask why you’re joining then tell them and if they’re interested direct them to your recruiter don’t pester anyone trying to get them to join the Army so you can get promoted it’s pretty selfish IMO, other than that your recruiter can easily get you to an E2 or even an E3.

I made E-5 in the Navy in 2.5 years. Do not recommend it. I moved up faster than I was prepared for it. Also had health issues (obstructive sleep apnea and hypothyroidism, both non-deployable and can rate upwards of 100% disability depending on severity) acting against me but didn't fully come to light then. Left basic as an E-3, auto promote to E-4 after completing FC "A" school. Took the E-5 test while in "C" school. Missed by 16 points. Took it again 2 months after getting to the ship, missed by a few points. 6 months later, made it. My "division" was top heavy, everyone but brand new to the ship was E-5 and higher. I wish I had 1 more cycle as an E-4 to learn everything better due to health issues and lack of training opportunities by my work center leadership. Things were just not clicking with me, mentally.

Hoping to provide some information from my experience. I came in as an E-4 w/ a college degree as a 68W. At the time, the minimum time for a secondary zone board appearance was 18 months. I just saw that they changed the reg to 16 months as of the end of 2021, which is great. Depending on the unit with all of the training and optempo cycles, the promotion boards may or may not be on a monthly basis. At my unit, it was fairly random (every 4-7 weeks), and sometimes soldiers were given a late heads-up that they were attending the board. I always believed that if you were an E-4 and approaching the primary/secondary zone, you should be ready to go (memorize the NCO creed and be confident in mock boards). In this situation, a E-4 may be coming up to his 16th month TIS, but there may not even be a board in his 16th or 17th month. Another thing to consider is that after passing the board and obtaining your p-status, you need to get slotted for BLC. The speed for which depends on the OML (which you have some control over the # of promotion points that you have). I have also heard some MOS's are prioritized for BLC, but I am not sure. It took two or three months for me to get slotted for BLC, and then it took however long the course is to graduate (22 days? IDK). Now depending on the point in the month that you graduated BLC, you may be too late to pin the next month. I think if you graduated in the back half of June, that you probably would have missed the date for July's promotion list. All said and done, I shipped off to basic at the end of October 2018 and pinned the beginning of November 2020 by going to the the promotion board as fast as I could (18 months + approx 3 months for a BLC slot, approx. 1 month for BLC, and just missing the October date since I graduated BLC towards the end of the month). It may work out magically for some soldiers to achieve the goal in 17-18 months with a 16-month secondary zone, but the timing may not work out in your favor. Another great secret is to learn about other ways to make E-4. Case in point: my friend came in as an E-4 without a college degree because he already was an EMT as a 68W. He went to community college for a few months and earned his EMT before he joined, and got to skip the EMT portion in AIT and saved himself a few weeks. He was a great Soldier and also went as soon as he could in the secondary zone, and this guy made E-5 before he turned 21. You might be able to do that fast/early if you joined as a high-speed fuzzy at the age of 17, but there are certainly other ways of going about it.
