Learning how to make easy and confident cuts is important to anyone who is getting into whittling. Sometimes you cant just brute strength your way though wood carving and you have to utalize proper technique and create good safe habbits.
Whittling requires skill with a knife and knowing how to use the tools you have to manipulate the wood. Without this, what could take you an hour could take several hours instead.

I agree with your philosophy of carving and controlling your knife. The other thing I learned is you may never be able to carve the same as some of the KZbin carvers. I am a slow carver because I cannot remove wood as fast as some carvers. I have learned that this is OK because my end carving is as good as anyone carver. My hand strength is less than other carvers which makes me a slower carver. But I really love the art that each of us can create!!!

I think this topic, the controll-power distribution of the hands, is really underestimated, thank you for covering it!

I thought so as well and is something that comes second nature to any experienced carvers. Sometimes, it just needs to be brought out to the light for discussion.

Now this might be a stupid question but sometimes I struggle with making symmetrical cuts on two opposing sides. It feels like I need to be ambidextrous for certain tasks. Have you ever experienced that or found some workarounds?

Not a stupid question at all! And to answer your question, I just allow for the asymmetry, and it looks way better to me.

Just self adhering ace wrap I got from the pharmacy. It ads some extra cushion when pushing the blades and reduces the chance accidental cuts on my non gloved hand

Every professional chef learns knife safety, and they also learn that the paring knife defies the rules of knife safety. It is acceptable, because you are always controlling the knife blade, and it's not hard to learn proper technique as shown here. It's not unsafe, it's growing up.
