I love the “they didn’t use wax hardening in the past and I don’t care”. I LARP with a guy who will critic weapons not in the correct style or a mix of time periods. I always think “you are pretending to cast magic, I don’t think it matters if it’s not in period”.

honestly that'd give more reasons to use modern methods of making stuff TBH

I play Dagorhir and folks can't even settle on something as stupid as pockets. Dagorhir is a mix of fantasy historical elements. The game wants to be real but the creators based it off Lord of the Rings. That being said however... "Pockets aren't period!" "Bilbo placed the ring in his pocket"

I would really appreciate a short series on how to make a Chest Plate with a cape, like the one in the background of your videos! I know it is a harder process, but I would really enjoy it.

The fake stitches actually turned out nice. And I like how it turned out when it's finished, great job.

Things I have learned from the newest Dark Horse video. 1) How to hide your extra 'opps punches' with fake stitches. 2) How to sand leather after hard waxing. 3) Hard waxing makes the back of leather feel like sandpaper. So cover it or sand it. And 4) What a half gauntlet is. 😂 Now I just need to figure out when my, ever increasing, knowledge of leather crafting is going to be come in handy. Since I don't actually do any leather crafting. 🤔😂😂

You should contact David Guyton and Man at Arms. Collaborate with them for ComiCon. Make complete sets of Fantasy Armor and matching Weapons. People would line up around the Block to place an Order.

Actually, to anyone who wanted to make the argument about hardening techniques, my response would be this; we have only second hand accounts at best about subjects like this which means we don't know anything definitive about how hardening leather armor might have been handled. Wax, in one form or another, has been around for quite some time and its been used for a lot of things. In the end though, any debate is going to reach an impasse simply because of the lack of reliable information.

I've seen leather "boiled" in oil before.. would guess that would be the medium of choice for pre-modern era hardening....(the specific type of oil likely varied on availability)

I like to cuir bouilli my leather so I can glue some type of pad felt, saddle fleece to my armor. There are other benefits if you fight in the heat or leave your armor in your vehicle wax hardened leather will loose it shape. My SUV when it get to 100f is 165f in that oven.

How do you get your cuts so clean??? Even your cuts on paper are on point. Also tried out beeswax like you suggested and it's so much better than water!

This video is awesome, definitely gives me more options in skill build for demi-gauntlets. As fighter in the SCA, i find it very useful to learn on how to build the armor that will later be add to my kit. Aside from that, Magnus quick question: how hard would it be to construct a full clam-shell gauntlet out of leather? Also, does it had to be wax harden or can i get away with it being water harden? other than that, Keep doing your videos and also be very creative. P.S do you attend to any of the war events like West Antri?
@DarkHorseWorkshop
@DarkHorseWorkshop 4 жыл бұрын
I don't get out much these days, I try and hit Gulf every once in a while. But I'm pretty banged up so am not attending much. I've never really focussed on making some clamshell gauntlets but if I was going to they would be waxed.

When you cut out the pattern in the leather and cut the small concave part, have you ever tried doing what metal workers do and cut lines down the middle? And if so how did it work for you?
@xXSkyifyXx
@xXSkyifyXx 4 жыл бұрын
My guess would be that it could potentially make the edge more jagged then just doing one smooth cut. Leather is much easier to cut than metal too, so it’s not really necessary to have those lines anyway.

No need to attach it directly to the vambrace it just floats on the hand.

God I wish cricut or Brother would make a big boy version of their machines that would cut 12 ounce and thicker leather.
@Robert15343
@Robert15343 4 жыл бұрын
For this, or even your other sport armor, if you didn't have the correct thicker leather, would it work to glue up two pieces to make something thicker? Something like "I don't have 12-14 ounces but I have 9 ounce that I could glue together". Would it still wax harden well enough or not? I have really enjoyed all of your videos and have learned a lot from them.
@DarkHorseWorkshop

I'd only ever use the proper weight. But I think you could make it work. Not sure about gluing though, rivet or stitched together

Please look at grit not colour. Green, red, white doesn’t matter. Every manufacturer has their own colour specification. Work from course to fine with your supplier. If they don’t list the grit then you shouldn’t buy from them.
