2:40 It would perhaps have been good if you had indicated here how deep (and wide) this marking should be and how deep it should be cut, as this can make a considerable difference. The width and height of the window (every mm) can also make a considerable difference. Nevertheless, thank you for the detailed instructions. It has helped me with a lot of things I wasn't sure about.
@osflutes514122 күн бұрын
Yes it does but there is no rule for exact measurements. Bigger is louder basically. Every one can make what they prefer. For reference, mine is 8mm deep and 10mm wide. It's not very loud.

@@osflutes5141 Yes, I still had a PDF as instructions from someone who gave certain measurements for certain whistles. But your video helped me a lot in practice! Thanks for that!

@@osflutes5141 looking forward to that! Im a low d nut although straying to wanting to make a low c from 25mm aluminium tube, do you think the same measurements on your pvc low c whistle would work the same? Was worried if the aluminium would mess up the tuning and didnt want to start from square one. Had an obsession recently with the native american style flutes too. Possibly a future endeavor.
@osflutes51413 жыл бұрын
@@josephdowell1027 Different materials should work the same way when it comes to tuning. If I want to use difficult material like glass I make first a pvc flute of same size and tuning and then use it as a reference.

What a very nice sounding whistle / flute , I made one some time ago but it was a dud no good ,I think my fipple was my let down and some understanding on length and hole sizes etc, also I think the pipe I was using may have been to thick , a whole bunch of things let me down to my lack of knowledge , I’ll try again , your flute was awesome .

If only I have time I'll make another video about whistle making. I've been making shakuhachi and other rim-blown flutes now for a quite long time. Now that I've had a lathe available for use I've gotten exited about making also whisltes.

thanks, I make Native American style flutes but I want to become consistent in voicing these other type of fipple so many other flutes use, that doesn't have a removable thing or tend to "wet out" as much. You provide a type that is not just the same as so many others, thanks. I think you could also defend yourself with this one if you get a homicidal critic.

I made a low D but the a and b notes in the upper octave are very flat. Do you have advice: should I make larger holes and shift their position to the end, or make smaller ones and shift them upwards?
@osflutes51412 жыл бұрын
Sorry I've missed your comment somehow... That's a tough question and rather common challenge for tuning. My understanding is that you can't do much by changing the hole sizes/positions, instead it's about making the windway lower: for example making it 1.2mm instead of 2mm could improve things. Lower windway gives better backpressure and better tuning balance between octaves.

WOWWWWW. This is great. Could you possibly do a low F whistle? I cannot find any one who has taught how to make one.
@osflutes51413 жыл бұрын
Pipes I have available are quite unsuitable for F but I consider it. I might be able to use same pipe I use for G. However the making process is exactly the same as with Low D so all you need is different calculations and different size pipe. iotic.com/flutomat/

The most is how to tune the flute you did not showed!
@osflutes51413 жыл бұрын
Yes, I mentioned it in description, some parts were lost because camera stopped recording few times. But for tuning... You first drill the hole to calculated location. Make it small first and then start making it bigger until you reach the right pitch. Oh and... measurements are shown in the very end.
