My first attempt at making stainless steel weld art so please don't be to hard on me! I tig weld this piece of 16 gauge mirrored stainless and try to keep it flat the best I can. Will be doing more of these using what I learned!

*3/32” Tungsten. I mess that up 50% of the time. Honestly it’s always been big tungsten (3/32) and small tungsten (1/16)..... and then once in awhile .040 and 1/8”. I called it 3/16” in the video 🤦🏼‍♂️

Im assuming you used a 300 series stainless. For future reference, consider using a ferritic grade of stainless, it has roughly a 50% less coeficient of thermal expansion and its a much lower cost. This will significantly cut down on distortion, as well as you will be able to buy thicker base material.

Hell of a job Justin. Looks awesome. Disregard the distortion , We do what we can and when we lack a good quench plate there isn't much that can be done in that situation. A sheet of aluminum would serve wonders for these in the future. Also, don't sweat being bad at a bad game. :p I wonder how many mad faces that just produced. Lol Keep up the great work!

@@JustVoss I understand that. I would as well. Could try clamping a piece of aluminum under a steel tack plate and to a table. That may draw out enough heat while allowing you to tack it. That's what I would try anyway. I'm sure there are better ideas out there.

How about using shop air to cool it. Start with a sheet of 1/2" (or thicker plate), 14" x 14" (or bigger), cut out the inside 11.5" x 11.5". This makes a stiff but hollow frame to tack to, then blow cool air from underneath in several places and have several escape holes for the now hot air to leave thru. Might work? Thoughts???
@MSJCustoms
@MSJCustoms 2 жыл бұрын
Usually if you cool metal too fast, it will warp even harder, the best way is to either have a heat sink or let it cool naturally

Get a thick piece copper for the heat sink, use silicone/bronze welding wire to tack them together. Also have a spray bottle of water to use to get the heat out of the copper, cause it gonna get hot sucking that heat out of the stainless and I think I would bring them amps on down, if your at 50 now try 40 even if u use thicker stainless. Stainless doesn't like heat so the cooler u keep it the better also you might consider your travel speed, you may do better at a faster pace. One other thing I would try , I would try it without any welding wire. This isn't code work, so no worry about the ferrites burning off without wire. I hope some of my suggestions help u out, good luck
@andrewsturgess2033
@andrewsturgess2033 5 жыл бұрын
The tig wire is usually to give depth to the art. Also to add to your suggestions I would say to use as thin as wire as possible. That + lowering amps to mainly be able to melt the wire will give best results on not warping the metal but cannot say for the actual art work. Sadly my art skills are non-existent and I have not attempted this kind of project myself.

@Demonlord468
@Demonlord468 4 жыл бұрын
@@patrickcoene3866 Half the gear you need you should already have if you are a welder.. Grinders and Abrasives. From there you just need a few more finer abrasives than normal till you get to polishing compounds. A good Buffing wheel for those is inexpensive as well.. Polishing Compounds can seem expensive till you realize they also last for many years and shit tons of polishing if you dont waste the stuff. A little bit goes a long way. The main drawback to polishing yourself is the Time Investment. Which can be huge. Especially if you want to do it correctly. Most people simply dont have the time or patience to do the polishing work themselves. Again most fabricators already have most everything they need for polishing so money has very little to do with it. Its all about the time and effort involved.

to much gas shielding and post flow. you actually want a little less for stainless art than you would want for actual welding... because you want the oxidation to occur a bit for the colors rather than preventing it with proper gas shielding and post flow time.
