Thank you. I totally mess up on a regular. So. When starting a new project I don’t usually use my favorite fabric and stuff. I call it a prototype!!! Sometimes it’s okay!

Making a tester for a client bag, had the exact same issue with the zipper, ripping it out to make a function able bag, going to do a drop in liner sew leather around it, but the next one going to try your zipper top method. Thank you, going to also direct this issue with pattern designer, nothing worse, then the disappointment when it is finished, wanted to cry. I am not fast making bags, took 7 days. Was so sad. Thank you for another great sew along. Working with leather or heavy vinyl changes the top for sure opening and closing.

WOW, way to improvise.....aaaamazing how you made this bag look fantastic and making the mess up look like the feature. Like you said, no one would ever had known that wasn't the original pattern. You are a fabulous bag maker!!!!

I mess up every time I make a bag - and usually mess up different things as I make another and another. Bag making for me comes with it's own learning language - and that language is doing. I can't watch, listen or read - I mean I can but that only prepares me to learn. Once I am into cutting, pressing and sewing - that is where the learning seems to begin. Most patterns fall by the wayside in this process - but the few that stay (and there are like 4 as of this writing) - I push forward and make 5 or 6 of them before I GET it. Once I get it - I make my own notes, document my own process, etc. Then I am free to enjoy making them whenever without issue. This is not a bad thing - I love the whole of it - I do get better at failing each time and I get faster at learning.....since you asked :-)

This is one of your best tutorials! I love the way you added those design elements; your bag looked great with it. In fact, I’m not sure I would have liked it without the black touches. Great job!

Thank you Lauren for making me feel better! I just finished a bag where I had sewn the lining to the exterior, all happy that I'd finally got that part done, because I'd had to rip the lining out and change some things already... and I discovered I hadn't sewn in the recessed zipper. How does someone do that??? Since it was vinyl and I'd already torn it up not once but twice fixing the original mistake I ended up sewing the recessed zipper on through the open pocket. My husband came into the sewing room because he heard me yell and was worried I'd hurt myself. But in the end, I made it work, it looks so much better than it has a right to... And it's nice to know even professionals have off days.

I really appreciate seeing real life sewing errors and then the creative ways to fix them. Almost makes me want to see an entire video of different bags where an error occurred and how it was remediated.

Love this bag. One of my faves. Currently redrawing it much larger (plus lots foam!) To hold and transport an embroidery arm unit. Might work, might not. Lol. Terrific how you added Black Vinyl strips! Looks very high-end. I dont use DST on zipper applications anymore but like how it holds connectors. Thanks for sharing a great sew. Loved hearing Dorothy in the background. Adorable!😍

I had the same problem with opening the zipper and followed Amy Lynne's advice on her Sunshine crossbody tutorial for my second try. She says she only topstitches the exterior. It worked much nicer plus the ends by the side seams are much nicer. PLUS she has a method to put in the zipper where you don't have to tack the zipper at 90 degrees before installing... GENIUS!

Finally got to watch the end of this and I LOVE how you did the top zipper. I love this bag, but I just don’t like zippers at the top like the original pattern has you install it. I’m going to try this on a Flair Crossbody bag.

I made a Trailblazer and liked how it came out. But use vinyl and a canvas and had similar issues to what you had with your zipper and my backpack straps are pulling out that center connector. So I need to fix that. I saw someone make one that is two inches shorter on all the main pieces and keeping the pockets on the side the same and loved the look of that. So I think thats one of the next things I will sew. I liked how you have you handles connected to the side connectors in the start. That was the other thing I couldn't figure out when I originally made it. How those side connectors would be useful on such a heavy form back. So I didn't make another cross body strap. But feel that being shorter they can be more useful.

I’m of the opinion there is no right or wrong when following a pattern. It’s up to interpretation. Except for sewing a crotch on pants backwards. 😂 but that can be fixed. Then there’s the 3 foot rule. If you can’t see it from 3 feet, it’s all good.

Were you able to sew this easily with the 1181N? Do you think the 1541S would be better? I am about to purchase one of these machines today and honestly their is a 800.00 different in price and I would like to know can I make most bags with the 1181N or will I have to upgrade evenually?
