Once again, I really appreciated this discussion! I've always been terrible at the "business" side of booktube so hearing both of your experiences was really interesting and valuable to me. I'm also the worst at networking and commenting- whenever I'm watching booktube, it's usually while I'm doing something else like cooking or cleaning but I've been wanting to make a stronger effort so people know I am supporting them! I also agree about some sponsors having really over the top requirements. That always turns me off, especially since booktube is a hobby for me. I really don't want to be overly stressing myself out about sponsors when the reason I'm sitting down to film is to talk about books! Since I've returned to booktube consistently, I've made it a point to not accept any sponsorships since that was always a stressor for me in the past. It seems like sponsorships have changed a lot since when I started and it's been interesting to see the evolution. I've been toying with the idea of creating a patreon so that insight was really helpful!

Thank you both for these booktube conversations! Wage transparency is something we desperately need more of and I really appreciate you being honest and open about your perspectives on these topics.

27:07 This is such a helpful conversation ❤ I record on my iPhone too! I’ve found that toggling my microphone settings on iphone from stereo to mono has helped significantly with the bg noise :) Settings>Control Center>Camera It’s not perfect, but it’s a free and easy first step to try if you’re not ready to purchase a mic or you don’t want to wear your headphones in every video (which is what I was doing all the time before).

I started doing book videos about four months ago. Then I moved and it threw off my schedule... for a few months 😆 major challenges with filming here, and I desperately need a mic that will work with my dumdumphone. I'm finally getting back into it though. If I ever get monetized, I'd use it to improve my tech first then it would fund my books. I can't think of any better way to make a living though, reading and talking about books. A dream for me!

As a fellow musician, I think Elle should start a third channel where you teach violin basics and progress each video!

Another great discussion. Question, how are you affected by viewers who pay for youtube premium and don't see ads?

Regarding the point how two videos with similar views making different amounts: they look at the viewers. Age demographic and country of viewer makes a difference to how much the advertisers pay. They assume certain groups have more disposable income and are more likely to buy their product.

5 years at booktube , video each week didn't monetize tell now😅 it's hard in Arabic community I think the reason KZbin push the enterantanig content for the area this reason one and because I am faceless channel two I start with my phone still in my same phone "not 9" and editing in my phone too.

If it helps, both of you show up under "channels your audience watches" for me and I have under 500 subscribers. I think it's most likely to show larger creators because that's what the largest percentage of your audience watch

Oh wow, seems like KZbin is better as a hobby than anything else, unless of course you are a really big channel. Did not think it would take so many views to get a good amount of money out of it. 25k subs already sounds like a solid amount but to KZbin that is apparently next to nothing.

Thank you for having this discussion! I wish there was a way to find smaller booktubers easier, cause it is hard with the algorithm but also so fun to find new people who really are your kind of people 🫶🏻
