It's beautiful. I am dating myself here when I say that my mother made me a beautiful beautiful muu muu and I wore it to school and the school called my mom and said I was inappropriately dressed! Scandalous muu muus!
@aleahlicht52622 ай бұрын
My mother got in trouble for wearing pants to her school. After she did, the school ended up changing the dress code to allow girls to wear pants, too, instead of just skirts. Something will always be too scandalous to wear!

I hate school dress codes. How is a muu muu inappropriate? By what standard?
@joybellamy55612 ай бұрын
SewRena you look 👀 like a $1,000,000 people probably think you have $1 million😁 but I will say this and people will disagree with me, but that’s what I like about school uniforms. Everyone is dressed alike no complaints hopefully no bullying but I still don’t see how a m could be inappropriate. I couldn’t wear pants in school either until the 12th grade, I lived in a cold climate, so we wore pants under our dress or skirts until we got to school or froze to death😂

Love your muumuu. Spent summer 1974 on Oahu and they would have called what you made a muumuu then. Fwiw very Hawaiian inspired
@timhazeltine32562 ай бұрын
Very cool. Reminds me of growing up on O'ahu in the 60s when many ladies, including my mother, wore mu'umu'u. There is a more formal style called a holoku, with a train, worn at very formal events. It was popularized by Princess Ka'iulani, the Hawaiian Kingdom's last Crown Princess.

I love how it’s so fitted and shape-flattering in the front, but so “flowy” and breezy in the back. That front shaping elevates it above Muu-Muu status.

Yes, it is a muumuu. I'm old enough to remember the original dress from Hawaii or South Pacific islands before the fashion industry marketed it as everyday wear. Thank goodness they did. My maternal grandma lived in them, and now I wear them from May through September. This was a great video. I enjoy all your great sewing tips as well as your lovely voice. I'm just about to make one from a pattern I've had for over a year, from fabric left from a maternity dress I made for granddaughter. Yes, it's late in the year but I must do it. Thanks for the inspiration!!!

I was born in the mid-1950’s. My sister and I wore mum muu dresses all summer, every summer, growing up. They were just wonderful, particularly cotton ones on hot days.😊

My Mom sewed for her sister who did a lot of traveling, and she made this very dress for Tessie’s trip to Hawaii. And she seed it on a Kenmore of similar vintage!

I love the idea of using elastic for the internal tie. I have a caftan pattern that calls for spaghetti straps to tie the waist, but elastic would eliminate the knot at my back.

The most elegant Muu Muu I have ever seen and perfect fabric. Yellow really is your color.

I live in muu-muus during the summer. It's the best house dress. The silhouette reminds me of Samantha on Bewitched. Her "witch's dress" has that same flowy back, but the sleeves were long. Hmmm...I bet with a different fabric this muu-muus could become a formal dress.

🙋♀️Call it whatever you wish, it's beautiful! I haven't sewn in years. I know how to sew, ball gowns, coats cocktail dresses and draperies/curtains and dust ruffles, pillow shams, and even a wedding dress for a friend. You have inspired me to pull out the machine and get busy. Thank you, I love your videos! 😊

My parents had a chance to vacation in Hawaii, and Mom brought home a muu-muu. It was a little more substantial cotton, but she wore it for a couple of decades, and it thinned with time. It truly was a great garment for living in the Southwest.

You wear bright colors so well! Lovely! I have almost that identical Kenmore sewing machine - have had it since 1972! My husband got it for me for Christmas our first year married. I've made many, many garments, including clothes for my 2 children, bathrobes for the family, and my own wardrobe for many years. I love seeing your make these vintage outfits!

Elizabeth Taylor and other actresses of that era wore that style in many movies. Depending on the fabric, it was styled as an evening dress for a home party or casual at home attire. Loved your video; it is the first I have seen of yours. ❤

You are correct on the name. This IS a mu'u mu'u. The term gets thrown onto anything these days including shapeless jersey T-shirt gowns from Walmart. I find it frustrating, especially pertaining to patterns and clothing, when words no longer mean what they mean. If I search for culottes I get everything but. As always, everything you create is beautiful. Well done!

My granny wore what was called Muu muu in the 70s . I think for her it was a carryover of the 50s sack dress , bright and colorful. She’s kinda joke about taking her bath and putting her muu muu on . I had the feeling it was from maybe her younger days. She was in her 60s in the 70s. And she wore them all the way through the 90s . Thst turned out so pretty!
