Have you thought about using a layer of tape or shrink wrap to mute the noise just a little bit

For keeping the buckles quiet-have you tried self-adhering wrap? The kind used for bandages. It comes in dozens of colors, and even camo patterns. Dollar Tree used to sell it in black, haven't seen it in a while in my local store.

Rather than messin' with slings ever consider making a 'rig' for attaching 2nd rifle to your pack or modifying a decent rifle carrier (with shoulder straps) to fit your field gear? I use a sling but I get your 'sling management' issue. I adapted a sniper drag bag for a winter elk hunt once - wasn't bad. Placing support arm in the sling and wrapping once around the forearm for support - didn't we call that the 'expedient sling support position' or something like that? The slack in the sling for shouldering was about the right length for that it seemed. I still use it on occasion.

i have a couple large packs suitable for carrying rifles. but for the hunting im doing right now the pack i use is a day pack. in fact i am always trying to get away with a smaller pack. just not going to support a rifle. good thinking though. and yes, that was what they called it. expedient sling support.

@@renaissancemarinetv3536 Yeah - when you struggled for the 'term' I had a mind rush back to 'Edson Range' at Pendleton! If you don't mind spending some money I've seen slings that have pull tabs for really quick adjustments. Look at the 'high end' brands and possibly Magpul, Uncle Mikes and Cabela's/Bass pro lines. If nothing else you might get some ideas to modify your own.
