I KNOW RIGHT and on top of that their chinese is actually good, as in they can actually speak the language. i’ve watched tooo many hollywood films that throw in a few chinese phrases and act like they have mastered a whole language for no reason at all (besides the fact that just because they’re filming in china) and force the foreign actors to speak chinese when us chinese speakers can obviously tell that THEY CANNOT SPEAK THE DAMN LANGUAGE like why??? like they didn’t force awkafina to speak it, just make her say she’s not good at it, see, it’s not that difficult right???

Stan Lee once asked Brandon Lee to play in a live action Shang Chi movie. Brandon passed away though on the set of the Crow. This might have been because the character Shang Chi was inspired over time by the popularity of Bruce Lee, although originally, the character was supposed to be a TV license attempt to adapt the 1972 TV show Kung Fu starring David Carradine (as the Shaolin monk Cain) which got blocked by Warner Media (which is unsurprising; Warner, who owned DC, had a lot of disputes with Marvel back in the day, like the lawsuits trying to secure the rights to the name "Captain Marvel" which Marvel ended up winning, so they were probably still salty off of that) . This Kung Fu TV show also famously was the role Bruce Lee auditioned for but was turned down because the producers told him America wouldn't accept a Chinese man as a lead character. This prompted Bruce to leave Hollywood and go to Hong Kong to film 3 movies: The Big Boss, Fists of Fury, and Return of the Dragon, which he invited Chuck Norris over to play as the villain; Norri's first movie role which catapulted his career. Then Hollywood saw how famous Bruce was getting overseas, invited him to star in Enter the Dragon, and after that was filmed, Bruce started to work on Game of Death and passed away in July of 1973. By the Fall of 1973, Enter the Dragon would hit cinema and become a huge hit, solidifying his worldwide success posthumously. A couple months later, Shang Chi hit the comic stands in December of 1973. At this time, since Marvel couldnt get the Kung Fu TV license, they got the license for long time fictional novel and movie villain Fu Manchu (created in 1913 in Britain), and used him as Shang Chi's evil estranged father. Moreover, originally the look of Shang Chi kinda resembled more of a Native American if anything with brown skin and a facial structure similar to David Carradine (since it was originally based off him). Also in May of 1974, Marvel created Iron Fist, another martial arts inspired superhero, inspired by the 1972 movie King Boxer aka 5 Fingers of Death, starring Indonesian actor Lo Lieh, who people might know as the white haired old villain monk Pai Mei in many kung fu movies (and the character was used in Kill Bill Vol 2, played by veteran martial arts actor Gordon Liu). The Kill Bill siren sound effect btw is taken from that film in which ever time Lo' would use his Iron Palm attack, his palm would glow red and that siren effect would come on. Over time once Bruce Lee and the martial arts movie craze exploded onto the scene, Shang Chi was designed around more on Bruce Lee, and eventually Marvel lost the license to Fu Manchu, so they renamed him to Zheng Zu an evil emperor. Then in a Secret Wars 2015 comic reboot, they merged the origin stories of Shang Chi and Iron Fist together along with changing Zheng Zu's backstory. And now for the MCU, they have merged Zheng Zu's character with Iron Man's main comic villain, the Mandarin and renamed him yet again to Weng Wu. So perhaps decades later, Stan Lee realized this, and thought what better way to bring the character's legacy around full circle and do it justice by asking the son of Bruce Lee to play as the character.

Spider-Man is by far my favorite super hero and I enjoyed this movie way more than the last two Spider-Man films. I think I even like it a bit more than Suicide Squad because of all the fantasy elements. I felt bad for Shang Chi’s father even tho he was the “villain”, for sure he will be remembered as one of the best villains up there with Vulture and Thanos. He was complex, not just the typical bad guy. The action was amazing, not surprising considering the fact that the cinematographer also worked in the original Spider-Man trilogy, The Matrix and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Overall I have to say I’m presently surprised and I’d rank it up there with the best MCU films of the last few years.

From 'Crazy Rich Asians' through to this movie (and all in between), Awkwafina is the one constant - she helps you release all that pent-up, edge-of-the-seat suspense to catch a breath or two of light-hearted good humour. That's how action movies like that get balance, else your head will be spinning at the end of 2 hours or more of assault of blinding light and speed, sound and action.

Perfection? You don't watch a lot of movies, do you? There's even 10-15 MCU movies alone that are objectively better made. The storyline was ultra basic, the action set pieces got worse as the movie went along, the flashback structure had bad pacing and the CGI was god awful in places. I expected worse, it was an okay film and I didn't regret seeing it once in the cinema, but get real, this is so far from what perfect should be... Watch some Tony Leung films he made with Wong Kar-Wai if you want real impact and emotion and watch some real martial arts films from back in the day if you want impressive action. This is just bubblegum...

Tony Leung was amazing & WenWu was a great character. He is considered the “villain” but more of an anti-hero. I think Shang-Chi is one of Marvel’s best & the Ten Rings are one of the coolest weapons or items. Shang-Chi is up there with Winter Soldier, Civil War & Black Panther. Now Black Panther & Shang-Chi might have “ethnic” heroes in foreign lands, etc but they are fresh stories with universal themes & ideas everyone can get behind & cheer for. Just like Kilmonger, there is sympathy for WenWu. He wasn’t just a generic bad guy. He was driven by power the Ten Rings gave him but gave it all up for love and family however it ended in tragedy. We identify with his grief which drives him back to the only thing he ever knew. The opening scene grabs you when WenWu fights with Shang-Chi’s mother YengLi: you see the connection & burgeoning love. Those fight scenes were amazing. Then after WenWu saves his son & dies, you get upset. I nearly cried. In the end, Shang-Chi was really about love, family & ancestral ties. We are part of our mother & father, good & bad. Shang-Chi was so much better than expected & I truly believe Tony Leung was born to play the role. He stole the scenes really but not in a bad way in that it didn’t detract from the movie or the other actors - he was just so good. Everyone was so good & the story was epic. Just think how the expectations were for this? The pressure to deliver. It was a Marvel movie but it is so much more. Everything is brilliant & you can tell they put in a lot of work & care into it.
